Do we know what his salary actually was? The only reports I can see are for Martin, which was $650,000 and a chance for more if he would have stayed. That's pretty comparable to anyone on Stoops' staff.

Just rumors, but I've heard the assistants are making somewhere between $150k-200k, but don't quote me on that. No idea how reliable that is. Coordinators obviously make much more. Makes sense that Cooks would bolt for a lateral move if those numbers are true.

Could be his philosophy and BVG's don't match up. Happens all the time with a new DC. The only problem is BVG hasn't shown much on the recruiting trail so far.

This could be addition by subtraction for ND. Cooks had very mixed results coaching wise for us if you think about it. He also was unable to land blue chip DB. We will always get 4 star DBs here, bottom line who ever is recruiting.

My conspiracy theory meter is ringing. BK/ND schedules junior day for the super bowl weekend. Inexplicably waits to the last minute to cancel it and BK now is at that Super Bowl and can't meet with a kid who visited during a blizzard and at a position of need. Now our second best recruiter and arguably most important one makes a Lateral move. Something is stinky.

Money should never be an issue for Notre Dame, they literally put gold in their buildings. Pathetic. This is why we're 8-5 every year, no commitment to being great.

Everything Dave Cutcliffe has done is strong and would fit at ND, I just don't want someone who's 60 years old. I want a young, energetic guy who's going to grind at recruiting.

I can't wait until you reach 60. lol

It's nice BK could take a break from the Super Bowl activities to call some recruits. It's a bad look losing an assistant to a lateral move.

If you think this all just happened you're mistaken.

I wouldn't be passing up a free trip to the Super Bowl. Good for BK

Wait for details before judgment is cast.

Whether or not this move was about money doesn't change the fact that ND does not pay their assistants top dollar. No I have no hard facts just going by what everyone who is close to the program says.

No ill will meant towards Kerry and from what is written, he is a great guy so I wish him nothing but the best for whatever reason(s) he chose to leave.

With that said, have we not complained about the play of the secondary to include CB play? Weren't we asking for some changes in the staff? Not all changes are bad.

Remember when people were upset when Warriner left and BK brought in Hiestand then people complained about that? Give BK a chance to add the replacement to the staff before judgment is cast. Plenty of other DB coaches out there to include one miscast on our own staff.

Give it time.

Point is, money or not, and since its not mine I don't care, plenty of other coaches out there that can recruit and coach just as well as Cooks, if not better.

Why the meltdown every time an assistant leaves? This happens all the time at every program, and Notre Dame ended up with good replacements the last few times they have lost one.

Also, what makes everybody so sure this was just a money move? Cooks is from Texas, so he may have liked the idea of being closer to family and in an environment that is more like home to him. The people who mentioned earlier that he is friends with the DC there and that his philosophy may not mesh well with VanGorder's could be onto something as well. If Kelly and Notre Dame really felt he was a great coach, I would think they would have been willing to meet the pay he was being offered for a lateral move. My guess is that this is not seen as a huge loss by Kelly or VanGorder. I certainly liked Cooks myself, but I don't see why this is means for people to be pissed off at Kelly and Notre Dame.

That's my whole point. We pay enough to attract the type of coach that when they leave there are "plenty of other coaches out there..." Here's an idea, pay the type of salary that attracts the BEST coaches in football so that if they leave not just anyone can replace them. ND already puts itself at a disadvantage by their self-imposed sanctions (I respect the heck out of them for it also). I just don't think money should ever be an issue.

Recruit good kids and make them go to class and graduate. Give them every thing they need to be great on the field, that should include the best facilities, coaching, etc...

If they are the BEST assistant coaches in football, they will be leaving for promotions.

No worries here, a ton of assistants under Holtz moved on. Kelly's been coaching for 25+ years so he has his contacts for who he'll want to bring in. I just hope they can recruit.

It is lateral by position but this puts Cooks closer to home.

His recruiting and talent production can be replaced.

I'm willing to bet there's more to it then just $$$. ND needs a shakeup on their staff and I'm okay with Cooks being the one. Would I have picked someone else? Yes but he was far from safe IMO. Scott Booker has his background in DB coaching and is an immediate thought as the replacement and they pick up someone for TEs. Or they move Bob Elliott back to the secondary. While Cooks is an admirable recruiter, he's hardly irreplaceable. As a coach, were you happy with the play of the CBs during his tenure?

If Tony Alford left for a lateral move then I would think something stinks but Cooks? I remember when Warriner left and people thought it was a horrible move then thought the hire of Hiestand was bad but that worked out just fine, as will this.

I see immediate dissatisfaction but I'm of the belief in giving it time. See how BK organizes his staff and go from there.

Not being a smart aleck but what has Booker done to inspire confidence in anyone?

I guess because he coached DBs at Kent State & Western Kentucky. Hopefully better than what he's done at ND.

Cooks turned down promotions to stay at ND when Diaco had one foot out the door and Cooks was the most obvious in-house replacement. ND passed him over to hire Van Gorder from outside. That tells Cooks he's hit his ceiling in South Bend.

I'm quite skeptical this has anything to do with money.
