The others won't have 2 or 3.

FSU, undefeated
SEC champion, 1 loss or undefeated (unless the East pulls the upset)
SEC west runner-up, 1 loss (to SEC champion)
Big 12 champion, 1 loss or undefeated
Michigan State (probably), 1 loss

Those are five candidates right there. Who do we get in ahead of without beating FSU? It could be even worse if the SEC East wins the championship game. Then you have THREE SEC candidates, not two (conference champ, plus two one-loss teams from the West).

You guys are right, a 3 loss Pac won't make playoffs, Not sure what I was thinking but I do believe Oregon will only lose one more game and win the Pac 12...

This statement from Wizard I agree 100%.. There is going to be a lot of people ahead of us if you lose... OT loss to FSU might be only saving grace....

Not being in a conference where we could win the conference championship makes this a must-win for a playoff bid.

NO!

According to Sagarin:

ECU has played the 97th Toughest Schedule

Marshall has played teh 166th Toughest Schedule

True, but if they ran the table, I'd hold that more than a 3 loss team. I doubt it would come to that though.

This is how we would get in

1) Michigan State loses the Big 10 championship to Iowa, Minnesota, or Nebraska, who all lose to each other rock-paper-scissors style. This eliminates the Big 10.

2) Auburn beats Ole Miss, Mississippi State beats Alabama, Alabama beats Auburn, and Ole Miss beats Mississippi State, and maybe the SEC East would have to win there. That eliminates the chances of two SEC teams.

3) Like Wizard said, Stanford/ASU/USC wins the Pac-12 and they don't lose another game (besides to us). That gives us a signature win over a potential playoff team.

4) Florida State stays undefeated and Baylor loses a game somewhere.

There we would have no B1G, a signature win, only loss to the only P5 undefeated, and the B1G is eliminated as a whole. The decision would fall to the team we beat with 2 losses or us, and in that case I believe we would be in.

Playoffs would be 1) Florida State 2) SEC winner 3) us 4) Oklahoma/Baylor probably. Nebraska/Minnesota/Iowa and Arizona State/USC/Stanford can go have a make believe Rose Bowl in Insignificance Land.

No way the SEC West winner goes undefeated. Ole Miss still has to play LSU, Auburn, Arkansas and finish at home vs. Miss St. Tennessee at home this week shouldn't be too tough though.

Miss St has a much easier road with UK before Arkansas and a DivII warm up before Bama and then Vandy before Old Miss comes to town. Much easier road but still hard to see them running the table.

I would love nothing more than to see Arkansas beat a few folks to really gum up the works.

Baylor has 3 ranked teams to play out of their last four games, of all fanbases, we should fully appreciate the difficulty of beating that many ranked opponents in a one month span.

FSU is a hat hanging win, and is critical to a playoff berth. There's a good chance only one, maaaaaaaybe 2 of our opponents besides FSU are ranked at season's end, and I doubt it's higher than around 15.

Stanford will be very highly ranked if they can win out. ASU could too if their only loss left is to us.

They play each other this week, so one of them will be completely rubbed out of the equation after that game. Either one running the table would leave them ranked high, but I think cannabalization will set in. Stanford has quite a few tough games left, as does ASU.

You're thinking of Ole Miss. They got Nkemdiche, Laremy Tunsil (top OT), Laquon Treadwell (top WR), Lavon Hooks (top DT) and Tony Conner (top-5 S) in 2013 after doing absolutely nothing on the field.

Mississippi State's rankings have consistently been in the 25-35 range for the past several years. Mullen's just doing a hell of a job coaching them up right now.

While I have my thoughts on Ole Miss' class that year, can't really blame Nkemdiche, Hooks, and Conner for going there. One had a brother already there, one was from the state and went JUCO first, and one played their h.s. ball basically right down the street from the school. Most of their other recruits were within the state or neighboring states of Tenn and Bama. One recruit I do know who was a signing day flip went there because his girlfriend at the time received a band scholarship. He has since transferred out to another school. Of all the recruits that year, Treadwell and Tunsil were the surprises.

One of Treadwell's best friends from high school, Anthony Standifer, was the year ahead of him at Ole Miss and played a big role in his recruitment. Standifer has since transferred to Eastern Illinois.

When Standifer was originally committed to Michigan, he was telling people that Treadwell would be joining him at Michigan as well. So, I think they were pretty tight in high school.

Standifer was the CB we went after right before NSD and he didn't have enough high school language credits. That was also when Yuri Wright got blacklisted for his tweets. We got pwned pretty hard by the 2012 CBs.....considering Tee was our only true corner commit.

I'd agree on Nkemdiche and Conner. Hooks, though, isn't from the state, he's from UGA territory. Went to CC about midway between Oxford and T Town.

You're right that Treadwell and Tunsil are the suspicious ones (although, at a point, the volume itself becomes questionable). Treadwell's one of the guys who tweeted out "just got paid" pics during his recruitment. Tunsil was just strange in the suddenness of his flip from a heavy UGA lean to an Ole Miss lock in January, given the product on the field. And I know how much the Rebs like to talk up their campus life, but, let's be honest, Oxford sucks.

Thanks for clarifying Hooks. For some reason I thought he was from the southern part of Miss. And I remember the Treadwell pics that were floating around shortly after his visit. LOL

It is ridiculous but (1) the coach's poll is the dumbest because it is basically a high school homecoming vote and (2) Michigan State and Oregon will both lose again, as will Auburn. And I believe both Mississippi teams are likely to lose at least once. So we'll see how it goes, but remember this poll is irrelevant. Only the committee's rankings matter and we'll see how that goes next week.

#8 is not all that bad. At least they didn't put UGA ahead of us.

The 4 SEC West teams ahead of us will take care of themselves.

Never thought I'd be cheering for scUM, but I will next week against the Spartans. Cheering for the Cardinals as well.

All we need to do is win out. We do that, we're in. Didn't think I'd be saying that, but at 8, very attainable.

MSU got spanked by a lower 5-10 ranked Oregon. Oregon lost to a 1-15 ranked Arizona. We just lost a thriller by getting raped by the refs. Even if you think the call is legit, we were knocking on the door to win to end the game. That ranking of 8 is a joke.

And reading on the twittersphere that the ref who threw the flag last night also threw the Tuitt targeting flag at Pitt. I think we have a bad seed.

We, ND, should not have moved. #5.

But at the same time I get how it works. Lose early, forget about it, then get a good ranking...MSU, really?

Even though the only thing that matters is the selection committee's vote it still sucks to see undeserving teams ahead of us in polls. The only team I wouldn't argue that much being ahead of us is Alabama. Auburn got whipped, Oregon lost to Arizona at home, and MSU got whipped as well. Oh well...5 games left, a lot of football.

Yeah if UGA would have been ahead of us that would have been a damn shame.
