Four-star linebacker Asmar Bilal decided today to put the finishing touches on his recruitment.

Bilal had narrowed to Notre Dame and Michigan months ago. Rather than ponder the choices any longer, the product of Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis chose to give the Irish a verbal commitment.

Ben Davis head coach Mike Kirschner told Irish Illustrated early Thursday afternoon that the commitment was official and Bilal had contacted the Notre Dame coaching staff to make his pledge.

Other scholarship offers on the table included Cincinnati, Duke, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisville, Michigan State, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, N.C. State, Northwestern, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin.

Bilal first visited Notre Dame in the spring. Back then he watched practice and connected with first year defensive coordinator Brian Van Gorder, who extended the scholarship offer.

VanGorder made a pitch that stuck with Bilal even as the recruiting process stretched into fall even without a game day visit.

"He was talking about Notre Dame itself and how it speaks for itself," Bilal told Irish Illustrated in April. "The academics and how having that degree just means so much. Just how Notre Dame is like no other and that he wanted to come back from his NFL coaching for college coaching and that's what he decided upon. He said it's a great school."

Bilal is commitment No. 20 for Notre Dame in the Class of 2015 and the second linebacker, joining fellow in-state four-star prospect Josh Barajas. Both are slated to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl this winter.

Four-star linebacker Tevon Coney - down to Florida, Miami and Notre Dame - is expected to make a decision next week and could possibly round out the recruiting haul at that position.

Bilal represents Notre Dame's second defensive commitment this week, following defensive end Bo Wallace of River Ridge, La., who chose the Irish following an official visit to the North Carolina game. Bilal hasn't taken his official to Notre Dame to date, although he debated a trip to South Bend for the Stanford game earlier this month.

The Bilal commitment will move Notre Dame to No. 8 in the Rivals.com Team Rankings, one spot behind this weekend's opponent, Florida State. The Irish will jump Penn State and USC thanks to the linebacker's pledge.

He probably should be on special teams early in his career with ND if I had to take a guess.

YESSSSSS. This kid is a heat seeking missile. If him and Jaylon are ever on the field together...

Great athleticism, but a less than inspiring video. Needs to play down hill a lot more and needs to arrive at the ball carrier with more force...too many times he seems to stand up straight and start dancing around rather than laying the wood if one of his teammates arrive before him, which leads me to my next point..the only time I see him being the first tackler to the ball if 6-7 yards down field. He needs to get a lot stronger, use his hands better to defeat blocks and get downhill. Lots of potential, but also lots of work ahead of him before he will contribute in my opinion. Glad to have him overall though. He looks like a great athlete.

Reps for having the balls to say that, lol. I agree. I'm not thrilled with his film, but we'll always have room so I figure why not take him. He is fast so there's potential.

Did Asmar Bilal just take Tevon Coney's train seat? Does the baggage car have room for one more linebacker? With three or four passenger seats available, I suspect Notre Dame will become very particular about boarding passes.

Keep in mind that was from a single game...not a whole year cherry picked.

He needs to put on 30 lbs, but an athlete with his frame could come in at 235 with mo problem. He will not be called upon to start right away. He will have at 1-2 years to see how Jaylon gets it done on and off the field. Hopefully he then grabs the torch.

Seriously? This is pretty much true for any incoming freshman. Very few kids can step in as a freshmen and make an immediate impact. Those that start still make a lot of mistakes that first year (JS). Of course he has to get stronger, they always do, they're 18 & 19 years old. Look at how much more physical Jaylon is this year.

I'll trust BK and staff on this one.

Seriously.

I don't think anyone mentioned him coming in and playing immediately, and I won't speak for Irishman77, but I'd espect a senior 4-star LB to be more imposing against other Indianna high schoolers. He gets lost on blocks and doesn't seem to dominate the high school competition in that film. Just my opinion.

Me too. Like I said, glad to have him.

Haven't you said before that you don't know much about evaluating film?

I'm glad to see this verbal commitment. Based on his recruitment, Bilal appears to be a football player that does his talking on the field. It's a breath of fresh air to see a recruit be humble rather than looking for every opportunity to grab the limelight. This recruitment involved an absence of multiple announcement dates, no hats on the table, no impulse commitments followed by decommitments, and a prolonged thoughtful process. Asmar, we welcome you to the ND family and look forward to seeing you on the field.

I say that because I don't want to sound like a know it all. I don't think anyone one this site is that much better/worse than anyone else, outside of maybe a handful of posters.

I'll gladly put my film evals against yours if that's what you're asking, lol. I'm not an idiot and talent is usually apparent. I don't need to study film at Holtz 101 to see that a kid has game.

When it all boils down, we're fans on a board looking for things that stand out.
