FiveThirtyEight's Neil Paine just published an article titled "Now Is When College Football Starts to Matter":

paine-datalab-whosin.png

Up until Week 5 of the college football season, the schools on the periphery of the AP’s Top 4 typically have a slightly lower probability of finishing the year among the (now-coveted) top quartet of teams than those currently occupying those slots. Starting in Week 6 — and accelerating in Weeks 7-9, the current stage of the 2014 campaign — the teams in the top four slots begin to pull away from the rest of the pack, increasing their probability of ending the regular season among the “Final Four.”

That’s good news for Florida State, Auburn, Mississippi State, and Ole Miss, each of which found themselves sitting in the AP’s Top 4 after the dust cleared on this past weekend’s wild spate of upsets. Teams that survive midseason aren’t completely in the clear — historically, there’s still about a two-in-five chance that one of the teams in the existing Top 4 falls out after Week 9 — but teams in that position are significantly more assured of being “in” now than they were just two weeks ago.

Yeah but he's not taking into account that Auburn, Ole Miss, and Miss St. are all in the same division of the same conference and will play each other. It'd be one thing if the top 4 was say FSU, Alabama, Oregon, and Oklahoma but having 3 SECw in the top 4 A) is ridiculous and B) kind of blows up his argument.

There is no mathematical way that they all stay ranked where they are. Worst case scenario is they beat each other among having to play the rest of the west. 2 of those teams will have at least 2 losses by the end of the year. Most likely it will be Miss St or OM because they don't play each other until the last game. The loser of that game is most certainly out of the top 4 before the SEC Championship game.

If pathetic Michigan can pull an upset over rival MSU in a few weeks I'd be happy. It'll give a small boost yo our SOS and pull down MSU

MichiganSt is going to choke slam Michigan. I dare say they are going to un the score up to avenge a 50 point beat down from years past. Expect Gardner to be beaten down and Bellomy to start.

I want the Skunks to suffer so hard they'll choke on the humility that's being shoved down their throat one touchdown at a time.

Seeing scUM had a hard time getting in the endzone against Minnesota at home, I don't see it happening in East Lansing. Think they have a better shot at OSU.

Use the old BCS computer formula's to decide the playoffs. Computer's are unbiased so they can't be wrong. Can they?

Coaches Poll Top 25 (ND #5)

Coaches Poll Top 25 (ND #5)

So here's what we have seen:

Auburn gets blown out by number 3, is now ranked 6

Bama loses to number 10, is now ranked 7

*Curious to see if ND also drops only 4-5 spots if they lose to number 2, not holding my breath though......

ND loses to FSU and we fall to 15-16th place. It's just the way it is....

However, ND will win big. IMO, It'll be 38-14. Just feel this team can do it and also feel FSU is overrated. ND needs this "W" to be relevant in the eyes of the CFB prognosticators as too often the Irish fall short.

Well then, I guess there is only one thing left to do...

Good to see people are whining about hypothetical slights.

Hypotheticals, what ifs, how abouts, consider this', and all other sorts of prognostications make this site hum with intelligent discussion (most of the time). No one is whining here except the Debbie downers who pop in to throw salty manure on otherwise harmless vacillations and ponderances.

i have a couple questions about SoS in the outcome of the FSU game this week.

#1 when Bama lost last week they fell from 2 to 7--will FSU stay in top 10 with a home loss to ND a top 5 team?

#2 does an ND win put them at 2 or even 1 no matter outcome of any other games?

IMO
#1 Depends
Blowout ND win >13 pts: No
Close ND win <13 pts: Yes

#2 I could see us leapfrog Baylor and obviously FSU would drop behind so that would be us at 3. Barring any losses from Ole Miss or Miss St. I'd say we don't go to 2 or 1.

If we beat FSU, I see them dropping to 8 or 9. If we win I see us only moving up one possibly two spots if the others ahead of us win as well.
