My post game observation: this Stanford team went up and down USC's defense. When we get to that game, take the over, no matter what.
Yeah they did but they lost that game and USC lost to Boston College. I'll take the win but I' m not convinced that Stanford is that great of a team nor USC

Stats are great when looking at the whole picture. There are people out there that get caught up in the stat game though.

Exactly. All that matters is one minute left, chasing four, fourth down...

Who do you want?

I'll take EG.

You don't have to choose stats and winning with Golson. He gives you both. Getting 2 TDs and putting the team in FG range consistently against that insanely good Stanford D in that horrific weather was incredible.

I agree. I am not stating that either. But, he has had back-to-back games where his stats have not been stellar. I am just saying - I don't care - he wins and that is what matters.

Looks like how one would describe the best player in the country to me.

Just don't fumble.

--Golson was pretty hit or miss, but kid is a winner. You're always going to have a chance with him out there.

--Love seeing Chris Brown have a nice game and Koyack have the clutch TD catch (lotta drops out there, big catch by him taking hit)

--Well, we've got 13 days to clean up our O-Line.

--D-line has been amazing this year. We played a lot of Nickel and still shut down the run. Haven't seen Stanford get shut down like that in years.

--Jaylon is the man, plain and simple. Drue is a stud out there as well. Farley got exposed a bit. I'd like to see Butler out there and Riggs in the slot on 3rd and longs as opposed to leaving Farley in coverage. He's had a great year though and had some good moments yesterday.

--Hunter Smith. Give him some credit for chasing down the returner on the second missed FG. At least he didn't get pancaked. Brutal game though.

- Who said that there is no room for criticism? I didn't see anyone say that.

- He had the best statistical game of any QB that has played Stanford this year.

- It must have looked differently on tv, because I don't recall any plays where he threw it away where Stanford left anything open for him to tuck it. Most pass plays, Stanford kept the edge and contained Everett. I don't know where you expected him to run or why you would want your starting QB to run into a pack of #1 defensive lineman in the freezing cold... but to each their own.

- The weather didn't "maybe contribute"... it was a prevailing factor for both teams all game long.

- A QB has to throw for 700+ yards to be considered having a good game? You have high standards, my man.

Dude,
Slow down. You will throw your diaphragm out, spouting that much hyperbole at once.

I was just pointing out that there is room for criticism of Golson. It doesn't mean that he didn't have a great game. For fvck's sake, there are more choices than "all in" or "all out".

My biggest complaint of Golson was that he was late on lots of throws. I don't know why he was late but there was a few across the middle, a deep throw to Fuller (and a second deep throw as well) and the last pass to Koyak while beautiful was late as well.

Overall though he handled adversity well and made the plays when we needed him to at the end.

Also someone work with him on how to hold the damn ball when he runs.

We won and that's great, but we have lots of room for improvement. Our big test is just around the corner.

GO IRISH GO!

No injuries! If we get the suspended players back and they play like I think they can, I like our chances against FSU a lot.

Was going to start a 'revised prediction' thread, but no sense in it until we hear from the decision committee.

haha... I was simply responding to your comments... point by point... including saying clearly that no one was saying Golson's play was black or white per your accusation. Also pointing out that the style of play you wanted to see from Golson wasn't actually available.

The 700 yards comment was yours... i'm not sure that you understand the definition of "hyperbole".

But ok. I agree. Golson's play isn't black and white. Just like I said, no one has tried to make that claim. No one.

Just wondering if some will be eating crow after Joe Schmidt's performance yesterday?! Thought he played amazing, and laid the wood on a few ball carriers. Over pursued a few times, but he hits hard.

Thought we were the better team throughout the game, had it not been so sloppy, I feel we win easily.

Not too worried about the Hunter Smith problems. Doubtful he'll allow that to happen again, let alone the coaches.

Golson struggled, yes, but again weather was a big factor. I think he bounced back well in the second half.

BVG knows how to coach, energize, and gameplan. I think Stanford isn't good, but they know how to run the ball. We too that away from them, and that cannot be understated.

5-0!

Bottom line for me is EVERY QB has a tough game, NFL or college. But the best ones find a way to win. Golson put the team on his back on the last drive and made arguably the most impressive throw of the season at the time of greatest need against the #1 defense in the country in terrible conditions.

Rest of the game:

-I felt like the WRs weren't running crisp routes and were jogging sometimes. I don't know if it had anything to do with the flu bug but it seemed like the O-line was giving Golson 5 seconds and no one was open.
-D-Line was outstanding and Jaylon was being Jaylon.
-Farley made some nice plays and I've been pleasantly surprised with his performance this season.
-The decision-making and playcalling from BK was pretty poor overall IMO. I didn't agree with at least two of his major decisions: 1) Would have definitely ran a QB sneak on the 4th and inches in the first half. 2) Would not have kicked the field goal in the 4th. We did end up making it but I thought the better choice would have been to go for the first down considering the holding problems. In terms of playcalling....wayyyyy too many runs on 2nd and 10. Basically no screens or creativity in the passing game. I thought we needed to take shots downfield to try and draw PI. When we eventually did, it worked.
-I thought Koyack would have a bigger game overall but I'm glad he made the big play and I hope this gives him an opportunity to be a bigger part of the passing game.

Totally agree with the WR comment. From the stands, our receivers were covered with 1 on 1's all game with zero separation. Then when they did occasionally get open, Golson almost always threw it to them. Then they would drop it.

I think that had a lot to do with his play calling. Most the game I had no faith in our passing game with how well they were covering our WR's and their inability to get open or catch balls cleanly. I too would have liked to see more screens and TE passes. It would have allowed us to take more shots downfield. Which would have been to our advantage not because they could catch it, but because as you mentioned... we could have got a lot of PI calls yesterday.

After watching Smith, Redfield, Trumbetti and Tranquill fly around, had me thinking how young this team is and damn we will have all of this for several more years!

Turned it over a few times against the 2 best D's we've faced so far. Still found a way to win. We have to clean that up before it starts costing us W's.

For the first time in forever I feel like we dictate the games. We don't take what the D gives us. We don't play bland D and just try to keep them in front of us. We do on O what we want. We dictate the game. Our D is aggressive. We will let you know what we will let you do. Even in 2012 I didn't feel we ran the show most of the time.

I agree fully, except for the QB sneak. I think they should have gone for it, but Golson has limited skills under the center (remember the spike?), and Perry owned Hagarty the whole game. We did a student body right with (I think) Cam that was successful. I would have liked to have seen this, but to the left.

Forgot to post this:

O-Line had a rough day but give them credit for that last drive. They gave Golson gret protection.

Bringing up old stuff from yesterdays discussion in this thread, post game. Why is everyone questioning the use of Cam over Bryant and Folston? Have you all not noticed that all the backs (including Golson) other than Cam have demonstrated that they have fumble-itis this season? Even if they lose the ball after the play is dead, I guarantee that the opposing team is focused on stripping the ball on the next play because of that carelessness. #1 priority when running the football, protect the rock. It's more important than gaining yardage. Bryant and Folston are spending too much time trying to make highlight reels, exposing the ball. I'm glad Cam got most of the reps yesterday, he's the most trustworthy back on the team.

Did anyone else notice Collinsworth in for quite a few plays in the fourth quarter yesterday? Was he coming in all game and I didn't notice or was Redfield hurt at some point or what? I just didn't notice him earlier in the game and thought it was an odd time to replace Redfield for no apparent reason unless maybe Redfield was gassed.

When has Folston fumbled?

I distinctly remember the ball squirting out multiple times, even after the whistle, several times so far this year. It's hard to find highlights of them because they happened after the ball was dead and weren't declared fumbles. I only have Rice, Michigan, and Stanford on the DVR right now, but I know it's come out at least twice.
