I don't recall who it was (a little intoxicated) but why wasnt a helmet to helmet called when UM offensive lineman cracked one of our dlineman in the helmet. NBC announcers even applauded it as a good block and how this is football. I'll have to go back and watch it I believe it was in the first couple drives UM had.

It was obvious targeting. Refs missed it.

Block by Redfield on Gardner was clean. Apparently, QBs are protected players though or something so it doesn't even matter that he blocked him with two hands to the front of his chest. I guess you're not allowed to block a QB period unless they're involved in the play. Gardner was also moving TOWARDS the returner when it happened and wears #98... soooo....

Last night was an unreal atmosphere. I'm 22 and been going to a game every year since I was born and that was probably the loudest and most energetic I've seen it. (I wasn't at the 05 USC game or Stanford in 12 though)

Trumbetti was blindsided and it should have been targeting. He left the field for a bit as well.

actually the only problem I had with the hit on trumbetti was the fact I knew it wouldn't be called both ways. I applaud those shots bc that is real football but i even said right after the hit that if we had done that or if we do it later in the game our guy is gonna get tossed. then it bites us on the pick 6. cleary gardner makes a move in persuit. he was not 20 yards behind the play and redfield could have ended his days on that hit and didn't. they should have waved the flag off because mad max let him live.

Just watched it again and it was most definitely targeting. #80 hill lead with his helmet and hit Trumbetti square in the helmet. Trumbetti had to leave for the play to get checked out.

Anyways this was an awesome win. Always proud to be a fan of the Fighting Irish. This just makes it sweeter.

I myself did not like the QB of Michigan getting laid out on the final play because that negated the Pick Six but other than that, loved every second of it, there were Michigan fans at Dave & Buster's last night and I tell you they were so quiet seeing the game go as it did you could hear a pin drop from them. They even left early LMAO.

What a difference between VanGorder's defense this year compared to Diaco of the past few years. We were blitzing, we took away the short and intermediate routes of Michigan receivers. And I want to see a video clip of the Notre Dame fans singing the Na Na Hey Hey Goodbye song towards the Michigan players and fans.

MGOBLOG is still reeling:

hokewelp_medium.gif

Tis the morning after and I cannot fathom my feelings towards the tire fire that occurred last night. I didn't drink last night as I am 'mature' now and rarely do so I don't have a hangover - and yet I do have a hangover, the unfathomable feeling I still have after that loss. I don't know what to think. I remember the Coach Rod years when it seemed we'd break some unpleasant record with each game we played during that first season; worst 'this', worse 'that', first time since blah blah blah' this had occurred. In some cosmic way it seemed like last night was like that, all rolled into one game. It was startling. One indignity after another. All our highly thought of recruits - well, most of them - were just cardboard effigies of good players; we were the Washington Generals once again. Then, when it was all over Coach Kelly said they had started 19 freshman or redshirt freshman.

They are young.

Sorry, I ramble. I don't even know what to write. I know this is only the second game of the season BUT THIS SHOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED.

This should not have happened. We should not have been hoping to AT LEAST SCORE in the final drives of the game, all of which ended in dismal failure. We should not of had to hear 'we started 19 freshman or redshirt freshman'.

Inside, subconciously, I have shut down. I'm just silent, with pursed lips.

What feel you?

Watching the game last night and seeing the above gif makes me realize that Yabba-Dabba is the best thing for Michigan FB. He wasn't wearing a headset and just watched the game like an observer. Not plugged in at all.

I'll take Gardner limping off the field over meaningless 6 points any time. It was a bullshit call anyways. Video review crew was awful as well.

Yup, play was completely clean. No idea how to embed Vines. Gardner is trying to make a play on the ball.

Quarterbacks who throw interceptions this year will be deemed defenseless as part of the NCAA's strengthening stance on targeting, which is when a player hits a defenseless player above the shoulders. The quarterback can still be blocked during a return, but any hit above the shoulders on a quarterback will result in that defender not only being flagged but ejected.

New NCAA rule draws mixed reactions | Times Free Press

It was not legal

-So many great things about that game; I won't repeat any of it. Maybe these have been posted too, but hadn't noticed:

offense was efficient (31 points and under 300 total yards: all 4 TD drives were over 50 yards, 3 were over 60), and not worried about the low ypc in the run game
-They only had one opportunity to return any kick (punt or KO), and the one they did return ND stopped them at the 15. Brindza was hammering the ball; even his FG looked like it would have been good from 55
-Enough with the story of how they were notified about ending the series: as if Jack giving them the letter a few days before the 2012 game would have been a better idea. At the time the series was about to go into a hiatus anyways (IIRC), and the expectation was that they would be the ones who might cancel it because the B10 was possibly going to 16

Only BIG negative in the game:
-I wanted to see Kelly go for 2 after the Pick-6...and channel his best Woody Hayes when explaining why. At least give the poor Ohio fans something to be happy about yesterday ;) (Okay, I was hammered when I thought that right after Shu scored, and it would maybe have been bad karma, but fvck-M)

Dude... what?

"The quarterback can still be blocked during a return, but any hit above the shoulders on a quarterback will result in that defender not only being flagged but ejected."

So this rule clearly wasn't what was in effect, because what they called was roughing the passer and the player was NOT ejected. And he wasn't hit high, he was blocked with two hands in his chest.

100% legal because it was a normal block on a return. If Redfield doesn't make that block, Gardner actually has the angle to tackle Shumate.

Haha yeah... That spot for Corey Robinson was awful. What were they watching?

He hit him in the shoulder pads. They may have called it wrong, but it wasn't legal

We literally took the motivation out of them. They were demoralized

The defense was amazing. The pressure was designed perfectly.

Golson looks really freaking good. Makes good decisions and throws really good balls

DBs are really good.

Freshmen are going to be really freaking good

WRs did not look great as there were a lot of dropped passes but that can be practiced and it will be. I am not to worried

Finally Muck Fichigan. Ann Arbor is ad dirty dirty whore

Shoulder pads is not "high" that's part of the strikezone. When you watch the closeup he literally hits his numbers with both of his hands. That's where you're supposed to block people.

Agreed, and they also seemed to miss two on the reviewed catch by Koyack (he did seem to have his foot on the line, BUT he also seemed to be passed the first down line)

No idea at all what they saw on that Robinson catch and run...worst case he was down inside the one. That is pure incompetence

I agree. I don't think it was an issue. But they obviously did. They didn't throw the flag and call everyone back to run another play, in a blowout, for fun. I assume they called roughing the passer because the targeting call is reviewable and that woulda been ridiculous.

That is even more inexplicable..... No way it can be roughing the passer either. I am still unclear how it could have been either. If it was targeting then Redfield should have been ejected and the penalty assessed. I don't even know how roughing the passer comes into it once Shumate intercepts the ball...

I don't understand their use of Funchess last night either. I'm glad I don't. But on a few key plays he wasn't even involved. One they kept him in tight to block on a pass play. The other they ran a draw needing like 20 yards.

It was a B1G officiating crew? What do you expect.

I think the refs got the call right, if only because it made the Michigan players come back out on the field for one last bit of humiliation!

I have two criticisms from last night relating to ND:

  1. These infuriating slow starts to every game. Every game the first series is a train wreck. Who is that on?
  2. Get the damn play in quicker. I thought this might be solved since Tommy wasn't out there checking but this seems to me to be institutional

Tommy was on the sideline changing the plays for old times sake
