The first punt return the Irish I about jumped off the couch. Special teams play was a huge and much needed improvement.

Golson played marvelous. CJ Procise redeemed himself but still needs to make that catch.

O line played very well opening the running game for McDaniel, Bryant, & Folston.

The thing that concerns me is secondary. I'm sure many agree.

On both of those plays, he didn't try to catch the ball with his hands. The drop was the ball bouncing off his chest. The TD he was able to hang on, but he caught it the same way ... with his body. He will continue to have drops if he doesn't start catching with his hands.

I still feel fine with my prediction that we have a top 5 backfield.

I watched ESPN post game for the first time in at least a year, fecking Lou just called Everett, 'Gholston' and Mark May just threw shit across the studio for Lou complimenting ND... Thank gawd I avoided this circus for most of the past two years

Mark May will always have an excuse against Notre Dame, plus he likes to argue with Lou Holtz just for the sake of arguing with him.

How many titles does Michigan really have? I always thought they weren't even close to us.

They claim 11.

Since the AP started naming Champions in 1936 UM claims 3 BUT the AP says only 2, 1948 and 1997.

Says the guy who's avatar is a player catching with his chest...

But seriously, yeah he needs to fix that.

Thanks for the info.
Sounds like UM to "claim" a title. Hasn't Alabama done the same thing?

Everyone make sure to read this post. It's catching footballs 101 to not let the ball get into your body.

There's a reason Prosise projected on safety instead of WR coming out of high school... I'm not saying he can't be a very good WR, but he does not have superior ball skills for an offensive player. Frankly, neither does Will Fuller who has all the speed/quickness you could ask for but doesn't have the best hands. Doesn't mean you can't be a really good or great receiver, but I think we'll definitely see more drops this year than we would like.

The running game is going to be pretty effective
Golson is very strong. And going to be a play maker.
The O-line on passing downs was blah.
I think against some of the better teams our defense is going to give up some points. We will need our offense to score 35 points to win.
I love that we have some play makers returning punts.
i really like the turf.
WR's really need to reel in some of the passes that were dropped.
Shumate like others have said looked really bad.
We need to find a way to get some constant pressure. I really thing the D-line is going to be a problem.

Over all a very good game we won and won big. It wasn't the barley win type game kelly normal has.

I have always had high hopes for Shumate, but he makes me really nervous in coverage

- Secondary misunderstandings were understandable.

- Baratti never ran a 4.4 laser 40. Ever.

- Riggs and Luke looked great.

- Farley's still a major liability in tackling (shoulder must not be recovered).

- Schmidt was impressive.

- As I predicted, Fuller >>> Chris Brown IMO.

- Jaylon is a star.

- Heisman is now spelt Golson.

- Thought OL was unimpressive in first half. All passes were made by Golson making a play for himself. Not a lot of running holes. Much better on the ground for the OL in 2nd half.

- DL was average to me. Not impressed.

- Greg Bryant is our #1 back IMO and should get most of the carries against Michigan.

- BVG looks like an axe murder.

- Overall, very happy with the big win. Expectations remain the same until I see more from the defense.

- Fuck Michigan.

Why do you think Schmidt was impressive? He was in the right position most of the time, but missed many tackles, and the other times the runner would carry him for several yards. Not saying the guy does play the best he can for his size, but Nyles Morgan will be starting within 3 or 4 games, max.

I don't think it is as much that we finally have playmakers returning punts, as it is we are finally blocking on punt returns. Every year I said the same thing: why does Kelly not have his team blocking anyone on punt returns? Today was totally different; there was a huge effort to block on each return. That made all the difference. Finally!

I agree, I just didn't expect much from Schmidt and he was on the ball and competed. He's not going to bring down Green, so that's a concern, but he exceeded my initial expectations.

My top observations:

1) We can actually get PLUS yardage on special teams!

2) Alex Flanagan is gone and it sucks worse than I imagined.

3) What the heck is Doug Flutie doing on our sidelines and reporting???

4) We should not hope Golson gets hurt but we definitely should not fear it.

5) Jaylon and Greg are more beast than we could have ever hoped. Koon, calm down.

6) Why is Brindza so hyped as a kicker?

7) If Van Gorder doesn't lose his voice towards the secondary over the next week, we are going to have issues with Michigan.

8) Man we miss Russell! ..and Austin!

9) Cam needs to purchase some real-estate on the bench.

10) Love the camaraderie of the team in general but especial between Golson and Malik. That is legit awesomeness.

11) Our field got wet and it didn't look like a monsoon.

12) Our jerseys fit looked a little wacked didn't they?

13) WE. GOT. SWAG.

re: phGreek

Rice was not "fooled" by our defense...they seemed to have an outlet receiver etc. every time we got cute...thats a little spooky to me.

On the "NFL Blitz" nobody even looked at the RB coming out of the backfield much less covered him. It was a defensive bust. Credit the Rice QB and RB but it should have been a short to medium gain not a big play.

On their last TD in garbage time, Barrati bit on nice play action and was beaten.

Those two plays were 90 yds of their 220 on the day.

ND's two most experienced secondary were out. There were communication errors as would be expected in Game 1 with a full complement of players.

One of the things I didn't see were LBs with arms flailing running 8-10 yds behind an open receiver shouting imploringly, "Somebody get my man!"

On Rice's first TD the receiver ran straight down the field, the short defender released him to the deep defender ... but there wasn't one. Another miscommunication/busted coverage as opposed to a well designed offensive play.

Both their scores and at least half their passing yardage came on 3 plays where ND defenders left the receiver unguarded. ND wasn't outschemed; ND played poorly on those plays.

Rewatching the game, Elmer was flat out bad, and Stanley was a HUGE step below ZMart in pass pro (duh?). I did like how our interior OL played, and the run blocking was pretty decent. I think both will get better, but I'm pretty worried about our pass protection versus Michigan. These DEs on Rice are nothing to write home about.

Yeah, there's going to be some sacks if the OL doesn't improve from this week.

My two biggest disappointments today were the OTs and Defensive contain. Stanley looked stiff legged and Elmer looked slow out of his stance. Defensive;y, we can't lose contain vs Michigan like we did today. Gardner will run all day. Overall, I was thrilled with the game. Don't get me wrong.

I'm going to keep it positive for the most part
-Obviously Golson played amazing. Looked cool and calm
-Some great running. If Cam is your 3rd back, you're going to do some great things in the running game.
-I saw some good things from the receivers. Fullers TD, Brown showed a burst on one of the swing passes getting upfield for a 1st down. Couple of ugly drops, but that will hopefully work itself out
-We won a game we were supposed to win in the manner we were supposed to. With the exception of a couple of miscommunications, game was never in doubt
-I'm confident the line will be much better next week. They improved in the second half, a lot to look forward to with how young we are across the front
-Saw some flashes from some of our D-linemen that I was happy about. We honestly have to give this Defense a chance to play out some. Im interested to see the scheme more. Seems like our line is maintaining gaps and the pressure is coming from the blitz. Im excited to see how this goes. Although I must say, Im not a fan of zone blitzes at all.
-First game, I'm pretty happy tonight
-Return game. Wish Bryant would have fair caught, but its nice to know we can get some yards this year

Worrisome:
-Kicking game. Nervous on extra points even!
-Miscommunication on D. As a giants fan, I remember the same issues with Spagnuolo coming in in 2007 and putting in a heavy blitz, aggressive scheme. Theres a lot going on, we need to work it out
-The delayed routes across the middle will kill us this year

It may sound silly, but I agree with some of the comments here about ND having more SWAG this year. They definitely seem more confident out there.

Yup, I'm with you and GoIrish41. Great receivers use their hands to catch a ball, not their body. CJ will struggle unless he get's this taken care of. I'm glad he held onto that 2nd TD, but that first drop could have been costly against a team like Michigan!

My observations:

1. OL protection could have been better at times, but I think they'll get better. Heistand excels at teaching pass protection I think, and it helps when you have a mobile QB that can bail out your OL when things get hairy. I know it wasn't the most talented front 7 we'll see, but I liked what I was seeing with the run blocking. I think we got better in that area as the game went on, possibly tiring Rice out as we pounded the rock.

2. Golson was awesome, no doubt. I would like to see him sit in the pocket a bit more and go through progressions though. He still seems to have a tendency to take off if his first option isn't open. It's hard to be upset over 3 rushing TDs, I just don't want to see him get banged up though. I'm confidant Zaire would do an awesome job if he was in, but Golson isn't quite as sturdy as a Tim Tebow. He put some muscle on in his year away, but he's still liable to take some nasty shots if he takes off a lot this season.

3. No complaints as far as Cam, Bryant, and Folston. All did an excellent job I thought, and Bryant definitely made a case for himself to receive a majority of the touches. I thought all 3 guys received a fair number of carries with Cam and GB at 8 and Folston at 12. As far as the Cam haters...he had the longest run of the day at 23 yards

4. WRs-It's already been mentioned, but CJ can't drop a sure TD like he did. He's got to use his hands and not his body. Fuller had a drop too I think, but his wasn't as pretty of a pass if I recall. Koyack had a drop, but he did make a few good plays. I was surprised we didn't see more Brown after he was talked up so much, but was not surprised to see Fuller do well. The kid is a play maker, and he wears the #7 well.

5. Defensive line drew some ire, but I liked what I saw from Sheldon Day and a couple others. Trumbetti made a nice stop when he was in. I don't think the DL did a terrible job containing, I think they kept Rice from running outside a bit and forced them back inside (Which is probably why Schmidt saw so much action today).

6. Linebackers missed a few tackles, but overall looked good. Onwualu got a lot of praise it seemed. Schmidt saw a lot of action and made plays. Jaylon seemed quiet, maybe it's just me, but I think Rice was running away from him to try and take him out of play a bit. It was nice to see Nyles Morgan in later, and I think he recovered the fumble? Heard a big ovation from the crowd on TV when his name was first called on the loud speaker.

7. Secondary certainly struggled at times, but understandably as we were missing two of our most key players. It would be nice if we get Russell back, although Cole Luke certainly handled his own. Safety is definitely a concern at this point. For as much flack as Farley picked up last season, I thought he looked decent today. It can't be understated how important his INT was at the end of the 1st half! The quick score that followed really opened up the game, we never looked back at that point.

8. Special Teams was an eye opener! Seemed like night and day compared to some of the previous seasons. I really like GB and Riggs back as punt returners, and the blocking looked good too! KR wasn't bad either. The only downside might have one miss from Brindza on a makeable FG (And an extra point that looked to squeak in), but I'm sure he'll get back into form. Special Teams might actually be a difference maker for us this season.

They were playing two 240 lb. Linebackers as their DEs. I'd expect them to have a speed advantage. However, we ran for like 280 on them.

Along with that, watching the game live and thru replay, the crowd was noticeably louder than previous years. Even games we played great in.
