This! We really didn't have our "fair share" of lopsided wins that last three years. With our schedule this year it might be hard to be more dominant than we have in the last three years. But I'm with everyone else, now that Rees is gone we should have more sustained drives this year.

If we don't hang 40+ on Rice, Purdue, and Syracuse I will be pretty disappointed.

From top to bottom, this is the most talented and deepest offense BK has had since he has been here. I'll be very surprised if this isn't his most productive offense at ND yet

Yep, and it should be. If it isn't BK's seat may get a little warm. The excuses are no more.

Agree Arrow. And the defense comes together and Special Teams figure it out then this season could be pretty special.

Put the weed down my friend.

I think that your judgement has been impaired. Purdue always plays us tough but c'mon man.

We had such a great team that we went to the national championship game and STILL needed Tommy Rees to come in and save the day AT HOME on the last drive of the game. And last year they dominated us for most of the game and could have easily won, and they were AWFUL last year.

So I don't see how him saying "we could lose to Purdue" is so far-fetched. Put a Miami-style beat-down on them for once and then we're talking. Until then, they absolutely can beat ND. I don't think they will at all, but it's definitely on the table at the very least.

Yeah I don't know why it seems Purdue and Pitt always hold the kryptonite in our case.

And Navy. Lol.

Navy doesn't always mess us up, and it's hardly exclusive to us. Ohio State and South Carolina each needed minor miracles to beat Navy in their most recent contests. That's one reason I hate being goaded for playing the academies. They play tougher than most people realize because the big schools don't usually play them and often cause a lot of injuries. Of course, that doesn't mean we should lose, just that I think of Purdue and Pitt being in a special category of fuckery. Looking forward to OSU struggling again in their opener this year.

You made it worse. There's thousands of champions and near champions who got lucky along the way.

Still doesn't mean we haven't struggled mightily against Purdue recently, and that they absolutely can beat ND if the team doesn't step up. A guy doesn't have to be high to see that, as one poster insinuated.

It's OK to disagree. That's what is great about this site. I just happen to think we can/will dominate Purdue this year. The history lessons are good fodder for sure and should be respected. I dont think they keep it close this year as ND has better athletes and better coaching...this catches up with Purdue this year.

this.

I fully realize it's been close in the past, but I am confident this is the year we begin to separate ourselves.

Their lowest ranking in OFEI during that time period was 26th.

Following up on Pop's post, our offense during Kelly's tenure has ranked 20th, 13th, 7th, and 26th out of 125 FBS teams in F/+. That averages out to 16th over the last 4 years. Even last year, Kelly's worst at ND, we didn't drop out of the top quartile.

Mediocre? Definitely not. Though magogians total yardage stats do indicate a strange consistency.

If we don't hang 40+ on Rice, Purdue, and Syracuse I will be pretty disappointed.

In 2013, S&P+ rated those defenses as average, pretty bad, and average respectively (but that's all relative within the FBS; all three of those defenses are far better than your average FCS cupcake). Expecting us to hang 40+ on an average FBS defense is not realistic, though it might happen against Purdue.

Have to strongly disagree with that. BK is far and away the best coach we've had since Holtz (14+ years when Kelly started). Unless you've got a coach waiting in the wings who you are damned certain can produce better results, you don't even talk about warm seats. He's won 71% of his games at ND, for God's sake...

Believe Purdue had 40+ pts scored against them in at least half their games, so it should not be a stretch for us at all. Syracuse gave a several 40pt games as well. I remember GaTech smacking them around like a rag doll her in ATL. Rice actually had a good record, but did take it on the chin a few times when playing the power conferences.

Not saying BK would get fired. I do think people will start talking though if this season tanked or if the O doesn't look more dynamic. I do think the O will take a huge step forward this year. Think we will make mistakes, but if we can't be significantly better than the 82nd overall rushing team, or 75th overall Pts for, there's a real problem. I would expect our average Pts/game to go from 27.2 to the mid 30s.

I think this is the year where our offense finally puts it together. BK has seen the light on the whole "grinding offense and good defense." It's just too hard to win that way anymore. Alabama is an exception these days, not the rule.

To be fair, I don't think Kelly exactly aspired to build a "grind it out" offense. It's more that he's never really had top-level quarterback play for more than brief stretches here and there.

Thinking this now more than ever

No chance that happens. We could lose to Purdue

Still think we could lose to Purwho?

Feeling more realistic. Love the stats, but the O is looking pretty damn good.

Eff this thread title. Our offense, passing in particular, was so efficient tonight. Nothing spectacular, but really, really solid. Which is how you win football games.

I am surprised we didn't try to go deep, but the mixture of play calling was solid.
