Its the old, "we aren't going to get player x therefore he isn't as good"

I have heard it twice that the staff wants Coney at OSL.

Wow, bold statement I like Coney but not that much. To me, Hilliard is a top 25 player in the country. Considering we already have good depth at LB. I'd take Hilliard over Bilal/Coney. Kelly has been building depth at most positions and now we need elite players. From physical/athletic trait standpoint Hilliard is bigger, faster, and more agile. Offers more flexibility as Coney is an MLB only. Now I like him there but not remotely close to Hilliard.

Yea, definitely a bold statement. I really like all 3 but I think Hilliard and Coney are a step up from Bilal. I agree with you that Hilliard is definitely a stud. I'm not sure if I agree that he's faster and more agile tho...I see them as pretty similar there. Hilliard is certainly bigger tho and his blend of all 3 of the traits you mentioned is very impressive and rare.

I'm probably just a bit high (maybe too high) on Coney cuz I just watched his highlights for the first time this morning and came away VERY impressed. Quite surprised actually. I particularly liked his pass rush and ability to get off blocks and still make a play. Very disruptive play maker.

Long story short...I like them both a lot and would be pumped to land either one...hopefully both. I haven't given up on Hilliard yet like most have haha.

Nope, that's not it at all. Hilliard is a complete badass and I'd LOVE to have him. I'm just impressed with Coney as well.

So with BVG's scheme, wouldn't that be a 9 technique?

Sam/Rover, depending on strong side...?

69, I think.

Seriously, all I have heard is that Coney reported the staff likes him "outside" Which makes sense, with Schmidt, Grace, Martini, and Morgan coming in this fall.

BVG runs packages that deceive other teams greatly. He does it by getting guys in place that can do a couple things really well.

Here's my take. We do have to throw out some conventional wisdom because of BVG's scheme. There is some non-traditional placing of certain position groups and qualities of that group. I've seen one report where Coney said the staff told him they were recruiting him at WILL, like Jaylon Smith. Personal opinion that is a recruiting pitch. Coney and Jaylon are basically opposite players. Bilal is a much closer comparison. If you compare Coney to the current players that we have on our roster that are at Sam and Will positions he lacks the length, agility, and coverage ability of those players. Turner, Onwalu, Jaylon, Farley, etc. I love Coney playing downhill but I don't see the type of player that should be in space. In fact I've seen some pretty rough tape of him in coverage.

Can someone tell me about this crazy scheme that BVG is going to have. I am a member over on II and all I have heard is he likes to blitz and pressure. Where can I go read about this Defense that I have not seen? I just want to see or read something that gives insight into this revolutionary D.

From what I understand, along with the blitz and pressure he likes to disguise what he wants to do. He moves guys around or doesn't have them get to their spot so the O has a hard time getting blocking assignments made.

You can't just bank on what he did as a D Coordinator previously as he's really talked up working with Rex Ryan as an LB coach before he came to ND.

My guess is to try and read up on what the Jets have been doing.

EDIT: the site One Foot Down has done some film work trying to figure out Van Gorder's plans for the D. There are a number of relevant articles found here.

That is my only question on Coney as well and if you've seen tape of him in coverage and came away unimpressed, I'll take you at your word. But like you said, playing downhill he looks great and to me he has well above average speed and agility for a LB on film so hopefully the coaches would be able to take advantage of that and teach him what he needs to improve if he were to choose ND. I also agree that I wouldn't put him at WILL either...probably recruiting pitch like you said. I'm thinking pure MLB and hopefully he can improve his coverage ability for that role. Not a mainly coverage type LB role.

Thanks for the insight on the film you've seen as well.

Next Tuesday(July 8th), Coney will be competing at the Opening, along with commits Crawford, Hoge, Sanders, and Tillery. At the Opening, Coney and Tillery will be on Team Alpha Pro. Sanders, Crawford, and Hoge will be on Team Mach Speed, along with target Ryan Newsome. After the Opening, Coney has plans to visit Auburn, Tennessee, and Ohio State.

Then he'll make his decision a couple weeks after those visits.

Other than Bilal is he the LB with have the best chance with now?

At this point, I'd say yes. Bilal has become very very important to this class at this point. Interesting how recruiting works. Prior to II it looked like he might have to push up his timeline, now he's got all the time in the world, haha.

IDK anything about his recruitment, but based on this article, my money is on Florida.

I hope this isn't another one of those situations where we weren't really in it, then a visit sparks interest, only to be followed by a commitment to his original top choice.

May be exactly what this is.

On the south Florida 7 on 7 circuit, Coney has managed to handle both the speed and length of some very good receivers. Awarded Linebacker MVP at both the Rivals Miami Camp and the NIKE south Florida Opening Camp. The one on one drills at these camps are very competitive, and linebackers without coverage skills can be humiliated in front of their peers. His fluid coverage skills are one of the reasons for the Opening invite. Coney shuts it down for his high school at middle linebacker, as evidenced by 170 tackles as a Junior, but he can play outside as well .

If this kid were the same size as JH he would have been rated higher, in my opinion.

We can't afford to lose out on Coney. There aren't many LB prospects left. Him, Thomas, Masina and Bilal are the only ones that come to mind and we need 2 of them.

Curious, Coney and Masina will be on the same 7 on 7 team at the Opening - Alpha Pro.

Other names will pop up later in the year. Happens every year.

Heck, Hillard could come back into play later in the season. We usually land a decommit every year as well.

It was said a little back in the Hilliard thread that he'd be more likely to decommit from OSU to ND, than the other way around. Either way, I don't see it happening.
