Hard to land these kids when you get in on them this late in the game. Thanks Blake.

Seriously, would you want 2 come to ND this year and compete with Golson for 2 yrs and Malik for 4 years? The dominoes will fall for recruiting next year much better with a red shirt year for a 2016 grad. But I guess if you try any of these schools there is always great competition. Blake and Waller were not going to beat out either of the above. They knew it, you knew it and BK knows it. Barring 2 injuries we are fine. If Kizer pans out we are set. Why do you think Gunner Kiel left???? Answer-he saw Malik as an EE and saw the writing on the wall.

I am just spit balling, but I think you are really on to it here. I do believe that all these kids are competitive and believe in themselves, they all believe they can be good, however it is a little different to be convinced that you will be great. There is a difference between being confident and being convinced. You watch Jordan or Ali those guys knew they were special, it oozed out of everything they said or did. I see that kind of mentality from Malik. Clearly he has not done anything in a ND uni yet, but listening to the guru's at elite 11 talk about his intangibles being off the charts, watching Gunner and some of the other guys opt out. I think even as good as EG is he feels the presence that Malik brings behind him.. Malik brings a maturity, will, and certainty that is rare in kids that young and I think it can be a little intimidating. I am not one that thinks he will be pushing EG to the bench, but I was never convinced that Blake was going to snatch the job after EG is gone, I don't think Malik would allow that. I think given all of that plus Malik's performance in the spring game, 2016 will be a better recruiting year at the QB position.

I know what you're saying, but Waller or any other 2015 QB would only be competing for possibly 1 yr w/ Golson (not 2) and only 3 yrs w/ Zaire.

Also, personally, I don't think Barnett was scared of Zaire. This is a kid many on here were saying would beat out Zaire and possibly win a Heisman, and trust me when I tell you he is a very confident kid. I could see a kid like Waller being turned off, but not Barnett. I just think he got the bigger offers, let the wrong people get in his head, and got full of himself and wanted more attention, which he got.

I get what you are saying and even agree with it some, especially regarding Blake. However, I personally think depth chart plays a bigger role than people realize. I don't think it is any coincidence that Blake started to really look at his options after the blue gold game. Before that game Malik was relatively unknown to most Irish fans. It's not difficult to believe Blake thought his only real competition would be EG. Then he sees Malik and realizes he has 2 really good guys to jump over. That task might now seem more daunting no matter how confident he is. And is it any surprise that the 2 main schools he looked at after committing were schools with an easier path to the starting job? Mariotta will likely be gone after this year and Alabama doesn't have a clear replacement for McCarrion. Just seems a little too coincidental to me. I'm sure with Blake it had some to do with getting attention and realizing he could go anywhere so why not go somewhere he has a better shot at being a 3 or 4 year starter and not having to wait 2 or 3 years for his chance.

I get L.A.'s point also but sometimes being confident/cocky, letting the wrong people in your head, getting full of yourself, and wanting more attention, are signs that a person is still emotionally a little young. And when they meet another kid who is convinced, has an absolute singleness of purpose, has made the tough decision and is still completely undaunted welcoming all challengers, whether they will admit it or not it can be a little intimidating. I am not saying this was consciously thought out by BB, Waller, Gunner, or anyone else, but when you turn them loose in the yard Malik is a natural leader with an alpha dog type personality, from what I have observed.

Kizer was the one that people really commented on his intangibles. Malik got rave reviews at the Elite, and finished third, way ahead of Shane Morris, (then UM's second coming.)

Malik got rave reviews on his leadership ability, and his ability to achieve his goals in the Semper Fi Bowl. From the time he got to ND he established himself as a superior leader, and athlete. I stated that when Keil left, Zaire had some hand in it and people laughed at me. Now people can see how Zaire can do that to another QB. I think that anyone in the '15 class would have to look at ND as a graveyard. More than less with LaFleur on staff, also.

Forgot about Kizer. I keep thinking he went to Toledo for hoops :)

Damn...we are Oregon's bitch at QB

He's joking about Barnett going to Oregon, which of course he didn't end up doing.

A grain of truth to it though. Isn't it true that Mariota had ND interest, maybe even a ND connection, but we didn't recruit him, at least not early enough? I seem to remember reading something like that. Could be mistaken. (I'm not thinking of Kevin Hogan ... I know he comes from a ND family.)

Oh man, if he's flipping, this would be one of the wildest years of QB recruiting I can remember.

Wouldn't be that surprising to me if he decommits. Oregon settled for him, and Stidham is available who they always really liked and he liked them, and most importantly Waller has sort of proved all his doubters correct this year. Oregon forcing him out would make a lot of sense.

Haven't followed his recruitment other than his on field performance this season, as you mentioned, has been underwhelming. Any idea of who might be recruiting him?

Northwestern? I have no idea. If he decommits, I expect a lot of places suffering QB defections might become interested. He has upside, just played like crap this year. Probably the most overrated player in the entire country by 247.

It is pretty crazy that a kid that highly rated had some very unproductive games and was very inefficient throwing the ball. Not a terrible prospect but not even remotely close the the 36th best player in the country. Against Mater Dei he was 3-7 for 52 yards and 19 yds rushing. A majority of his games he was around or below 50% completion percentage, long long way to go as a passer.

I may be wrong but I am pretty sure he left early against MD with an injury. That explains the numbers. I agree though he is not the 36th best prospect. The whole team was overrated including ESB.

That's fair, the majority of the point still applies. He was 11-24 versus JSerra, 8-17 vs. Santa Margarita , 7-15 vs. St. John's Bosco, and 11-24 vs De La Salle. Those are just really bad passing numbers for a top 5 even 10 QB. He makes up for some of it with his legs and that's the reason he's a worthy long term project but that's what he is a project. I don't view being in the top 5ish QB's you should be a project. Very similar to the Ricky Town argument from last spring, good HS QB but rated far too high.

Who cares, we have Wimbush. Did you read where his coach said he could be the most talented QB at ND the minute he walks on campus? I know, big praise but what if true?
