If you want some perspective, here are the listed Catholic Churches in the Greater Charlotte area including Rock Hill, where lots of D1 talent is located. These are primarily new churches and I count 15 in a driving radius of about 1.5 hours

Its amazing Jeff Burris came to ND at all.

I like this on the schedule. Would be nice to somehow have a SEC team every year. I've seen Bama, LSU, South Carolina, and Tennessee, and Tx A&M at ND and they were all good games/series.

Coincidence that all three states without ND grass are places ND hasn't signed a player from in a decade+? And that two of them are Mississippi and Louisiana?

Every year, conferences without a playoff game play their last regular season game the same weekend as conference playoffs. See Big East & Big 12.

One thing I will add to the Deep South debate is the lack of a Catholic presence and the opinions of Deep South people regarding Catholicism. Of the states in question: Alabama, Mississippi, and large portions of Georgia do not have a Catholic presence and for the most part Catholicism is looked upon with disdain compared to the other "Christian" denominations.

The exceptions are in large city and suburban communities, for example, Charlotte, Atlanta, Miami. These are the places with kids we need to target. We simply are not going to get the average athlete from Warner Robbins, Georgia or Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It is a cultural thing.

Speaking from experience, I moved to SC over 25 years ago, and we could not find a Catholic church within 30 miles of where we purchased the home. We went to the local Baptist church and when asked what church we were from we answered we were Catholic and it was generally met with a "Bless your hearts" attitude. If you know what that means then you will know it was not a nice thing.

People tend to forget about the culture shock aspect when talking about recruiting. It's a big deal when you are talking about taking a Baptist kid from the Deep South and plugging him into the chilly midwest at a Catholic university with the word "Irish" right in the name. I can see that recruit and his family saying "why do I need to go all the way out there when I can just stay right here and play big time football at LSU/'Bama/Ole Miss?"

EXACTLY.

You need to go back and read what I wrote, AGAIN.

I KNOW that we have not pulled from those three states (which you clearly defined as the Deep South, despite the fact that you left out over half of the region and tried to retroactively, falsely insinuate that you were including those other four states that you did not even mention). I stated as much.

I also noted that we are trying to get into those areas, hence the game in GA to whet the appetite for more SEC games in the future, in the areas where we do not pull from currently.

It is part of a plan that Jack and BK have. Start in areas where you have pull, get some players from those areas, then move onto the areas where you have not got as much, and by playing SEC schools, you show that you are not afraid of SEC talent; also you show that you can go up against the better teams in the league.

The ACC is NEVER, EVER going to challenge the SEC for football recruits, as a conference. That is just a fact, and just playing FSU every once in a while does not mean we have the same access as we might, if we play an SEC school and can start to beat them consistently.

We may not have to play a FL every year, but trying to get them in a year where we are not playing FSU would be good because we would be down there more often than not. Same goes for AL or AU, or even LSU (which does have a large Catholic population and yet has been closed to ND for a long time, even before Les showed up).

SEC-ND games are ALWAYS good for the Irish and CFB in general. Shying away from that kind of competition is not the way ND built its brand across the nation, and it can only help if we are seen playing an SEC team every so often, preferably in years where we might not have to be playing FSU.

The rest of the league is pretty much mediocre, at best, so I am not afraid that playing an SEC team will hinder our chances against the ACC, overall. Nor will it hinder our chances at getting into a playoff as often as you are thinking, either.

It is one thing to be worried about the future unnecessarily, as you are; and it is another thing to actually plan for the future, which is what Jack and BK are doing.

I trust them to know which way things are blowing in the CFB universe, and not to make moves that hamstring the football team.

In the BCS era, if ND wanted a title shot, they would have to be UNDEFEATED, period, because of the conference alignments/tie-ins and conference title games. Now they can schedule a slightly more difficult schedule (in theory!), maybe lose one of those and not be immediately removed from the national title discussion.

I think that actually removes a little bit of the pressure to win every single game, now, which may allow the team to be a little looser and play more freely in the huge games and more confidently throughout the year.

The fact that you cannot see all of the positives that come out of this is just mindbogglingly narrow-minded (and that is being kind), silly, reactionary and extremely melodramatic.

Spent a long weekend in Hilton Head and spoke to several UGA fans who were excited to see ND coming on the schedule. Every time I wore and ND shirt some around the pool or beach, it seems a UGA fan would strike up a conversation and say how happy they were.

Great match up for both teams IMO. More from the fan standpoint than the school standpoint however.

Don't know ND's schedule that far out, but if Ga replaces a team like Texas then I don't think the match up is beneficial to the Irish. ND will be in a better position to pull Tx recruits before they pull Ga recruits most times. Add to the fact that Tx is a more national program and has more of an "elite" appeal, replacing them with a Ga is noble but a downgrade in the larger scheme of things... not currently the product on the field as Ga is a better program right now, but the pull power of Tx is much, much bigger and represents a longer term positive as an opponent of the Irish than the Dogs do.

I think if you give Strong a few years in Texas, they'll be wrecking teams regularly again. Still, from a recruiting point you're right that we probably stand a better chance of pulling Texas recruits than Georgia ones at this point. We don't play in Georgia very often, so maybe this is how they plan on getting more of those kinds of players.

ND playing BYU as a "13th game" would be amazing if they were able to get this allowed.... If you want to comepete with conference championship vote, you need to play a semi good team... I don't think ND vs Air Force will move the needle when it comes to playoff votes
