I think it should have been.

Sound off. (How do I post a poll? I used to know how. Mods please edit if possible a yes or no poll.)

Turnover by Italy. Break on by Campbell. He cut in between Chiellini and another defender in the box and went down. Chiellini defintely gave him a kick in the feet. No call.

To me it was a penalty and a yellow card.

I thought penalty and yellow. Don't know how that'd be a red without him grabbing or making a hard tackle.

A player must be shown a Red Card and "sent off" (i.e., made to leave the field) for the 7 offenses listed below. A player shown a "Red Card" & sent off may not be replaced during that game (i.e., his team must play a player "short" for the rest of the game; however, in some leagues a player may be replaced if he is ejected for receiving a second Yellow Card). The 7 offenses for which a player must be shown a Red Card and sent off are:

1. serious foul play (includes any use of excessive force or brutality against an opponent when challenging for the ball. Examples include a dangerous slide tackle from behind, or an "over the top tackle" in which a player raises his foot so the cleats could hit a player, or a two footed tackle that takes down the opponent. FIFA has broadened this definition by saying that "Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force and endangering the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play. For current rules visit fifa.com, Laws of the Game. The above quote is from Questions and Answers, Additional Instructions for Referees). The rules now include "Decision 4", which says: "A tackle, which endangers the safety of an opponent, must be sanctioned as serious foul play".

2. violent conduct,

3. spitting at anyone,

4. deliberately touching the ball with a hand in order to prevent a goal or to deny an obvious goal scoring opportunity (such as to prevent a "Breakaway".... this does not apply to the goalkeeper within his own Penalty Box)

5. fouling an opponent to prevent an obvious goal scoring opportunity (e.g., holding to stop a breakaway),

6. using offensive, insulting or threatening language and/or gestures,

7. or receiving a second yellow card in one game.

The only one that applies is #5. And notice the example they give in the rulebook... GRABBING an opponent. You're supposed to be given a red for either recklessly or intentionally bringing someone down to stop a goal scoring opportunity. Running full speed ahead and having someone cut in front of you such that there is unavoidable contact is not that. You're responsible for running into the offensive player so it's a yellow, but it's a course-of-play foul like many in the box fouls that result in PKs + yellows or just PKs.

I think knocking a player down on a lateral cut and front and center, shoulders square from behind would fit the criteria.

#5 absolutely.

Ref would have been well within his rights to give a red but I'd have given a penalty and a yellow, if it were me.

Still haven't seen it but the refs have been pretty awful towards CONCACAF teams this world cup. FIFA just removed the ref from the Mexico-Cameroon game that disallowed two goals.

You're the only one who thinks red, bro. Emcee is right that if he thought it was an intentional takedown he'd be in his rights to give a red. But it wasn't an unobstructed goal scoring opportunity, it wasn't a vicious foul, and it wasn't something obviously intentional like a grab or hard tackle from behind with no attempt at the ball. That's classic yellow.

I may be.

Well then that's the point of this thread LAX.

To correct my stance.

And maybe I'm loosening up on my stance.

But I don't think anyone can disagree it was a poorly decided no call.

With an opportunity for coast rica to be 2 up.

Absolutely. When you watch the super slow mos, he gets hip checked. Does he embellish? Yeah, I think so. But clearly a foul.

Costa Rica is about to ice this game though.

They just showed the replay again from a different angle ... definitely no red card, imo. Campbell took a heavy touch and Chiellini thought he could dart between the ball and the man. He just wasn't quite quick enough. Not quite as malicious a challenge as I thought. Penalty, sure, but maybe no need for a card.

I wish I could find it online.

My dumbass was too busy typing to see it on tv.
