I kind of believe this. I think he is daring the staff to give up on him. I think he is looking for some love from the staff.

It makes too much sense for him to come to ND and he could have committed a while ago and been happy. I don't blame him at all for enjoying the process and trying to feel ND out on whether they really want him. I don't mean to sound like NDsean but his latest visit has always been his favorite. In my experience that is the type of thing that you hear from a kid who is enjoying the process. Live it up and then come home to ND.

Would rep you again but I can't. The southwest agrees with you GB.

I have to believe that we stay in regular contact with any recruit we have offered. He should know how the staff feels about him.

He's trolling all schools till August 28th then committing to ND

I have always sort of thought this, but I did not want to post it because it would have been mocked. I definitely agree with your statement, I am just curious to know how serious you are. :p

I was specifically referring to these posts and some other that I'm too lazy to look up. But for a while he did know how they felt about him and it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows.

I just got around to listening to Power Hour and ugh. More shit being brought up about Diaco. Apparently we are actually further behind the 8-ball that I thought with Jashon's recruitment because supposedly he didn't fit the size requirements that Bobby boy desired in a DE. Really fuckin us here, Bob.

I'm not so sure ND is out front. This is the first I've heard of Bob being down on him. Mike made it seem like ND wasn't recruiting him too hard prior to BVG.

quote:
“It’s like Ohio State and Michigan State at the top,” Cornell said. “I can’t pick between who I want No. 1. You can’t beat both of them. Both schools are really good.”
...
“Michigan and Penn State are right behind them, and UCLA,” Cornell said

geez....

i'm really starting to think that the staff just isn't as into him as we might be.

I've believed for awhile that is part of it.

Yeah but if not Cornell, then what's the plan at DE this year? I realize it's not a big area of need after the numbers taken last cycle but is there really a scenario where the staff takes 3 DTs and 0 ends?

That's a good question and I'm not sure there is an easy answer. His weight and potential position switch, our depth at the position from last class, our scheme change (he's not a WDE anymore), and his lack of interest in ND. All those things go into this conversation. It's not that they don't want him, I just don't think they view him as the top prospect at his position. Guys that have some interest are Austin Bryant, KLS, Natrez Patrick, Cowart, and Gustin. Do we have a realistic shot with those guys, it doesn't seem like it. I'll leave it at, the staff must feel comfortable letting this play out so I'm rollin with them.

We have to stop playing the blame game (ie Diaco).

We went after him with BVG and ND isn't in the too group for whatever reason. ND shops down a different aisle and we move on

I think we have a very good shot with Gustin, but unless he cancels his mission it doesn't really matter for the next few years.

With a guy that is at a pipeline school, ranked at the time as #1 in the nation, and Diaco didn't do much in the way of recruiting him. His early ND interest was allowed to wane to the point where he is not even mentioning us. While I agree we cannot blame him for a lot that he is blamed for, I think this is one that falls squarely on him.

Agreed and that's why I worded it that way. Because it doesn't really matter in the short term but your right.

Cornell ND visits by Defensive Coordinator:

Diaco- 4

BVG- 1

The "Diaco didn't recruit him" line smells a lot like your typical shielding of the current staff by the insiders. We've had half a year since Diaco was hired at UConn and not a single person was saying Diaco didn't like Cornell during late 2013.

We offered Cornell late in his sophomore year. We were all over him early and often. Were we doing that all against Diaco's will?

If Cornell really is cooling on ND it sure seems like he's probably burnt out from everything from 2012-13 and is probably realizing as he's seeing more schools that Notre Dame might not be the place for him.

For some reason I believe he is trolling. Gbdomer mentioned it recently and I agree. Will wait till August 28

I think everyone is oversimplifying. Notice how his profile says OLB/DE. He was recruited hard early because he's an athletic freak who projected as a CAT prospect.

Diaco did effectively zero recruiting of any type from when the 2013 season started until he left for UCONN. Not just Cornell, I mean towards anyone. Barely lifted a finger. I don't think that is some myth. I mean, did he ever once go on the road? If he did, it was a comically small amount of travel relative to other assistants.

While that was going on, Cornell also packed on some bad weight and also stopped progressing on film. He was DT size by the end of last year. And I don't think he's ever really been a priority for this staff RELATIVE to other programs. I think we want one DE and I'm not convinced that the coaches are all-in that he should be it whereas other programs like OSU and MSU consider him a big need.

So it's Cornell not liking ND as much, us not liking him as much as we did when he was a soph phenom, and a combination of other little factors... end of the day though the only important takeaway is that the status quo has him headed a lot of other places not named ND.

I can live with this ONLY if it doesn't somehow affect Hilliard's recruitment, which I THINK it won't.

Hilliard won't make his decision based on Cornell's.

That's what I was getting at. Cornell was said to want to play with Hilliard, and I believe Cornell is much more impressionable. Hilliard has his head on straight and will make a decision for his future that is not directed by any other recruit.

Works for me. I view Hilliard as about as close to "can't miss" as a high schooler can get. Don't feel the same about Cornell.

He will likely end up at one of those three schools and a decision is expected Aug. 28 … Prior to that, he is expected to return to South Bend in July for a final visit.

Locked into PSU visit for next weekend. I assume this means he's skipping II.
