Who is he considering?
The article says Bama, Auburn, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio State are the main contenders. Also remember hearing Florida State awhile back.
Who is he considering?
Missouri fans over on rivals were saying its doubtful he would qualify at most schools. Makes sense why we didn't offer.
Sucks we didn't offer.
I'm with you rack em.
I'm guessing the staff looked at him and had their reasons why they didn't offer.
ND is being very selective this year in recruiting the position. They have 4 tight ends that will have 4 years to play. Getting a guy they like and that will fit what that fills a void is key. They really want to get a bigger TE to help in the run game. More of a Rudolph/Luatua build.
I think they are happy with having options of Heuerman,Weishar in the pass game aka more of a Eifert role where they can line up off the line in the slot and even outside. That creates a lot of mismatch problems. Heuerman is fast enough to create problems if a LB/Safety is on him, and is big enough to take on a nickel. Weishar obviously hasnt seen the practice field yet, but if has a lot higher ceiling than a Hentges in all aspects.
Luatua I know people are torn over, but the fact that he sees himself as a run blocker speaks volumes. I dont think motivation will be any question and quite frankly you cant teach wanting to be nasty or his athleticism for his size. Smythe is more of the typical inline blocker with the ability to split out.
I just see more potential in the 4 guys they have no vs Hentges. You look at the guys they are recruiting and they are different than Hentges. Chris Clark, Will Gragg are much more advanced in the pass game than Hentges and have builds where they can really fill out still. Jackson Harris is close to Hentges but probably more athletic and aggressive. Alize Jones is just a playmaker that you want at the position. You cant make that arguement for Hentges against any of those 4 and I think thats why they never were too active in his recruitment.
Notre Dame is getting to the point where they can look more at how kids fit the offense/defense in more specific aspects bc they have depth at positions. Tight End is one of those positions where they need a bigger TE and thats really what they are concentrating on. Hentges just didnt fit the piece to the puzzle they were looking for.
