Seems like Northwestern to me.

Seems like a leprechaun to me.

The NCAA has been handing out hardship waivers like candy. I'm skeptical that they'll bar his transfer to ND (assuming that's what he wants) because of 6 measly miles.

Could he get a hardship waiver for his hardship waiver?

Six miles would seem - as my old chemistry teacher used to say - "close enough as makes no difference." Also, I'd think there are a not insignificant number of kids who live more than 100 miles from any FBS program. In the Dakotas, for instance, or northern New England. Probably even parts of Texas and California. What does the rule say for them?
Also, how important is it really to Ty to play this coming year? Is that hardship waiver a dealbreaker?

I try to be an optimistic realist or maybe a realistic optimist. If Ty wanted to be at Northwestern would this not be a done deal already? IF Ty wanted Northwestern what would prevent this from being done and over right now?

Yes. Nothing.

As screwed up as the NCAA is at times, I think the 106 miles would be allowed Look at how many times they have flexed their guidelines. It's like "220, 221, whatever it takes".

I also thought Devin Gardner's application for a medical 5th (?) year was an obvious no-go, but the NCAA did me the honor of disproving me there. With the NCAA, assume NOTHING.

This seems to indicate they aren't worried about the 100 mile limit, doesn't it?

Do you mean Ty and his family, or the schools?

I'm sure the schools aren't worried about it at all. From their perspective, getting Ty for 2015-2017 rather than 2014-2016 is better than not getting him at all.

As for Ty, not sure how strong his desire to play next year is, but I think he's said that while he would like to play next year, it isn't a deal-breaker. Open to correction on that.

I don't know why he'd want to go to USC, transfer to Michigan, then have a good chance of having a whole new coach in a year, but whatever.

I suppose RB is probably the easiest position to move from coach to coach, but still.

The depth chart at Michigan for a 5* running back is something to be desired, although the putrid offensive line, and pretty much everything else, are not.

They might not currently have a great line, but they have a lot of highly rated OL that are young, so I think that'd be attractive to a young back.

Isaac was also granted a hardship waiver from the NCAA that allows him to transfer anywhere within 100 miles of his home without penalty.

With only two mentioned visits in Illinois and Michigan, he would be required to sit out a year before participating due to NCAA transfer rules and for both schools being beyond the 100 miles covered with the hardship waiver. However, with Isaac being a true sophomore, a redshirt year is available to the coaching staff if they so choose.

I gather all of this answers the "Did USC successfully block us" question.

I am not sure that is true. Maybe. Maybe not. Kelly and Swarbrick work effectively and quietly behind the scenes and get job done. The longer this plays out the better I think it is for Notre Dame. I think if Ty REALLY wants to come to Notre Dame, Ty will be wearing the Blue & Gold.

I'm not sure how badly Kelly wants Isaac anyway. I'm sure we'd take him if the path was clear, but if he'll have to go to battle against the NCAA and USC to make it happen, might not be worth it.

Agreed. Isaac is a great athlete but this is hardly a case of a player who fills a gaping hole in the depth chart or anything like that. I think it would be crazy not to take him if it's just a matter of accepting his interest, especially considering that we definitely have the scholarship to give, but to the extent it will be a drawn out process that will distract the coaching staff from more pressing roster needs I don't know if it's worth it.
