ND men's and women's teams will be wearing new jerseys for the postseason again. Well, "postseason" is a little generous for the men this year...

How many seniors are on the men's team? Just wondering how soon I can expect to see a "Worn 1x Special Edition ND Basketball Jersey" up for sale on e-bay. :dogpile:

Atkins, Sherman, Knight, and probably a walk-on or two.

5. Wojo is no different than Johnny Dawkins and not much different from Brey. I already addressed Dawkins performance at Stanford. Wojo is an unproven HC compared to Brey, who has won coach of the year multiple times for his conference. Fans would simply hope Wojo would succeed as a HC. I'm not even sure he would take the ND job.

Apparently he was good enough for Marquette. Not like they are a better basketball school than us or anything...

Wow. Surprised he'd go there since I'd probably be a little wary of the Big East these days. Hilarious also that Buzz Williams went to VA Tech. Must have told him they'd commit seriously to being a basketball school, or Buzz also had worries about the Big East.

Really hope Brey takes the job.

ND bball needs to start over with a new coach with a new scheme.

You got to think a decent coach would want to come into ND to help "rebuild."

Not sure why he would go there after turning down Maryland a couple years ago

I doubt it happens, but at some point you have to think Brey is seeing the sign on the door.

I personally think it's time for both parties to move on without each other. He's had some really good teams during the regular season but it clearly doesn't transition over into the tournament. His recruiting is average at best.

I don't like many things about Brey, but you can't really criticize his recruiting. He fights against the same problems Kelly does, but the basketball program doesn't have an iota of the prestige ND football has. The elite players want to go one-and-done and major in slaying coeds. The good white players still want to go to a powerful Bball school so what can ND offer them that Duke can't? I don't think anybody could recruit at an elite level at ND. But you can definitely get occasional 4-star recruits and have a solid team that can usually get to the Sweet 16 and once in a while break into the Elite 8. If ND could get to that level, I'd be very pleased, but I am 95% sure Brey cannot take us there.

Any coach capable of fielding a consistently dominant team would not want to come to/stay at ND. You could not keep an elite coach, because we don't pay enough and don't have the commitment from the administration and don't have the facilities (going to improve marginally though).

With regards to Brey, I don't see why Brey would leave ND for Cal (less $$, Tier 4 program) when he turned down Maryland (roots, more $$, historically Tier 1B-Tier 2 program). Unless he is just sick of ND.

That's why you go after a mid-major guy who has the drive and desire to achieve success quickly. I could care less if the next coach leaves after 3 seasons if two of those seasons feature more success than Brey has had in the tournament. We can worry about who the coach that replaces the next coach is down the line.

I really think Amaker is the right guy. He is probably ready to move back to a big conference.

Amaker just turned down BC. I doubt he'd come here now since Harvard will be pretty stacked next year.

Right or wrong, I don't think Swarbrick would agree that we should hire a guy who will use this program as a stepping stone. I can guarantee he wants the program to be a destination job. What we need (and dont have) is the ND-version of a Kevin Ollie or a Fred Hoiberg. Someone who played at ND, played in the NBA, and actually wants to be here for the long haul.

How about Archie Miller, Ben Howland or Jay Wright not likely but Amaker should be number one candidate.

Yes to Archie Miller.

Jay Wright would never come here.

Ben Howland would be a decent hire but I feel like I've heard stories about shady recruiting and such...might be thinking of someone else. Regardless I doubt he would come here.

3rd to last in the ACC is so much better?

My point is, the Dude has basically been average at Dayton, which has bball tradition. He just struck it lucky in the tourney one year (the only year he's won a tournament game). Before this year Brey was doing better in the Big East than this guy was doing in the A10.

What exactly was lucky about beating Syracuse and Ohio St.? They outplayed the hell out of both teams...

So Brey is just "unlucky" in the NCAA tournament?

I don't think Brey is a particularly good tourney coach, but OSU and Syracuse were a great draw. OSU isn't particularly athletic and wasn't built for the tourney. Cuse faded pretty hard down the stretch. They weren't 3 seed good to end the year.

Making huge runs in the tourney is largely luck. They key is to get in a lot and hope for a great draw. Also helps to have more athletic teams than Brey generally fields. My point is, Brey may not be the guy but listing off coaches who made an elite 8 with nothing else on the resume as a panacea isn't a solution.

Or listing guys who would never come here. Or guys with no college coaching experience.

If you go look through the thread I posted a list of 10 guys, some of which have since taken other jobs or what not. There are still 4-5 guys on that list + a few more mentioned since that we could get if we ponied up a little bit.

I don't understand why everyone is so afraid of taking a risk on someone else. Sure Archie Miller might not have the resume other guys do. But every great coach gets started somewhere. If you guys are okay with the last 10 years, that's fine. But Brey is not a "great coach" and never will be. Archie Miller has the potential to be one.

The more I think about Laimbeer, the better he sounds. Head coaching experience, ND connection, NBA success... I wonder if we have ever given him a call.

I like Greg Lansing from Indiana State if we have to replace Brey. He knows the recruiting landscape of Indiana and his teams are always disciplined. Plus he's got experience at a major conference school as an assistant.

Didn't want to start a new thread just for this, but met Steve Vasturia at a party on Thursday night. Great kid. Really funny and down to earth and was super open about talking about the team. I was pretty trashed, but he thinks the team will be quite good next year with Jerian back and was adamant that Connaughton will be back no matter what happens with the draft. Wish I was sober to ask some better questions ha.

Anyway, Steve is a great kid/great ambassador for the team. I was shitfaced and I'm sure was being annoying, but he hungout for about 15 mins and took some pics w me and buddies. Good to see a ND guy putting up with fans.

wasn't sure where to put this but this'll do.

Top 50 Coaches - ESPN

No. 45: Mike Brey, Notre Dame

Brey is a lot like Thompson: Save 2013-14, his teams are almost always good if not great, and almost always fall short of expectations in the tournament.
