I expect Golson to have a very good year. And I think it's crazy to think he'd leave at the end of the year.
This is what I was trying to say. I was a dick for those comments. But I'm pretty sure he was benched against Pitt. 98% sure

no he was benched against Purdue and Pitt as well.
Nope. While he could have played against Purdue, he did suffer an injury to his throwing arm and Kelly decided to put Rees out there. Why risk it with a freshman QB who's hurt? He was actually doing pretty well up until the fumble, going 21 of 31 with 289 yards and a TD. He was not benched against Pitt. Like NCND said, it was because his helmet came off, so he had to leave a play.
Yes he was benched after his helmet came off in the second quarter. After Rees threw a pick, Golson was put back in the game.
You're both correct about Purdue. He did get hurt and was taken out of the game. He could have come back in, but BK decided to stay with the guy that had experience and was moving the ball.

He was benched against Pitt. You're thinking of Oklahoma when Tommy came in for one play after Golson's helmet came off.

To get this back on the rails..........Even if Golson lights up the sky with his performance this year, I can't see him leaving yet. Two reasons, 1st not a large enough body of work and 2nd, his size and physical attributes (arm strength).
One great year doesn't make a QB. Guys that don't meet the typical pro QB size typically have to have at least two strong years of play before teams want to use a high draft pick on them. Now if they only have one great year and the size (Ryan Lief), teams are more likely to use a high draft pick on them.
Regardless of the success, of Bree, Wilson and Kapernick, teams still prefer the big QB's. Now if this latest crop of smaller QB's comes in and had sustained success, then I think teams will start shifting their thoughts more.

He didn't play his frosh year.
Golson has plenty of arm strength it's his accuracy that needs work.
Rees made the most of that one play then, he went 6-11 for 64 yards and 1 INT.
Golson had a terrible 1.5 quarters against Pitt. He was benched then re-entered when Tommy was also struggling.
Benched for Purdue, Michigan, Pitt. Injured against Stanford. Out for BYU. Tommy saved us a bunch that year.
Rees can play a little, as long as he only plays a little.
Look at the game. It's on Hulu.. you'll see exactly what happened.
What are you trying to argue here? That Rees threw 11 passes in 1 play or that Rees threw 11 passes in the time that it took Golson to put his helmet back on?
Look at the box score. Read the write-up. Watch the highlights. Golson was benched against Pitt for playing crappy. I don't know why anyone is arguing this point.
Here's a quote from the ESPN write-up:
Kelly pulled Golson late in the second quarter because he was missing reads and progressions. But the coach put Golson back in after backup Tommy Rees threw an interception and the Irish fell behind by two touchdowns.

This guy. Lol I'm agreeing with you.
Right, but academically, he'd be a senior, right?
You don't think Golson has the arm strength?
Golson has no issue with arm strength.
Colin Kaepernick is 6'4", 230.
There have been numerous QBs with one great year of play that get drafted high. Also, the question wasn't about getting taken with the first pick, but rather drafted at all. If Golson lights it up this year there is a very good chance he could be a mid round draft pick, maybe higher.
Yes and no. Granted I'm referring to two years ago, but I didn't see a lot of the deep outs the pros like to use. He can definitely throw it deep when he gets his feet planted. I suspect with the work he did and the weight training we should see a marked improvement. The little bit of spring practice I saw the ball looked like it jumps out of his hand like a rocket.
Agreed.
Here's his 50-yard bomb back (longest of the season) in 2012:
