no he was benched against Purdue and Pitt as well.

Nope. While he could have played against Purdue, he did suffer an injury to his throwing arm and Kelly decided to put Rees out there. Why risk it with a freshman QB who's hurt? He was actually doing pretty well up until the fumble, going 21 of 31 with 289 yards and a TD. He was not benched against Pitt. Like NCND said, it was because his helmet came off, so he had to leave a play.

He was benched against Pitt. You're thinking of Oklahoma when Tommy came in for one play after Golson's helmet came off.

Yes he was benched after his helmet came off in the second quarter. After Rees threw a pick, Golson was put back in the game.
You're both correct about Purdue. He did get hurt and was taken out of the game. He could have come back in, but BK decided to stay with the guy that had experience and was moving the ball.
This is what I was trying to say. I was a dick for those comments. But I'm pretty sure he was benched against Pitt. 98% sure

bro I disagree. He got benched and yes he might fell on his shoulder. But Kelly wanted Rees for that spot

To get this back on the rails..........Even if Golson lights up the sky with his performance this year, I can't see him leaving yet. Two reasons, 1st not a large enough body of work and 2nd, his size and physical attributes (arm strength).

One great year doesn't make a QB. Guys that don't meet the typical pro QB size typically have to have at least two strong years of play before teams want to use a high draft pick on them. Now if they only have one great year and the size (Ryan Lief), teams are more likely to use a high draft pick on them.

Regardless of the success, of Bree, Wilson and Kapernick, teams still prefer the big QB's. Now if this latest crop of smaller QB's comes in and had sustained success, then I think teams will start shifting their thoughts more.

You don't think Golson has the arm strength?

Golson has no issue with arm strength.

Colin Kaepernick is 6'4", 230. :)

There have been numerous QBs with one great year of play that get drafted high. Also, the question wasn't about getting taken with the first pick, but rather drafted at all. If Golson lights it up this year there is a very good chance he could be a mid round draft pick, maybe higher.

Yeah, I don't see it.

I think of Everett has a monster season he is a setup for the NFL to draft him. The only knocks I have seen against him is his size, and questionable choices. He has his weight up, everything points to his throwing motion being elevated and his vision being much better.

Coming back to ND, particularly if he conquers this spring, summer, and fall, will answer any questions anyone may have.

I think the kid just may be golden. A friends nephew scouted him hard for basketball. His athleticism is legendary among coaches in two sports. He had so much velocity on the ball that it worked against him, in my opinion. If he has all that worked out you are going to see a mobile quarterback with a wall in front of him, a split second release, and a rope to a series of receivers that can do something with it.

I am not saying it will, but it could be deadly. And if it is, people are going to want a piece of it. And, strangely enough, that may just be what is best for the program.

That was awesome! Thanks Rocket!

Rees made the most of that one play then, he went 6-11 for 64 yards and 1 INT.

Golson had a terrible 1.5 quarters against Pitt. He was benched then re-entered when Tommy was also struggling.

Benched for Purdue, Michigan, Pitt. Injured against Stanford. Out for BYU. Tommy saved us a bunch that year.

Rees can play a little, as long as he only plays a little.

I'm not saying Golson doesn't have a good arm or that he won't have a big year, but I see it as highly, highly unlikely that he leaves school to go to the NFL, unless he just doesn't want to do anymore school. He won't be a high draft choice next spring. I love Golson, but that's just reality.

Look at the game. It's on Hulu.. you'll see exactly what happened.

Another thing in our favor is to look at all the draft eligible QB's next year. Winston, Marriota, Hundley, Chuckie Keeton, potentially Kiel. With the exception of maybe Keeton, they are all damn near prototype NFL size. Most are pretty mobile as well. Unless EG has an insane TD to INT ratio and wins the Heisman, his odds of an early NFL selection are pretty low.

What are you trying to argue here? That Rees threw 11 passes in 1 play or that Rees threw 11 passes in the time that it took Golson to put his helmet back on?

Look at the box score. Read the write-up. Watch the highlights. Golson was benched against Pitt for playing crappy. I don't know why anyone is arguing this point.

Here's a quote from the ESPN write-up:

Kelly pulled Golson late in the second quarter because he was missing reads and progressions. But the coach put Golson back in after backup Tommy Rees threw an interception and the Irish fell behind by two touchdowns.

Right, but academically, he'd be a senior, right?

Technically, no. Missed a semester (unless he attended elsewhere while on suspension and ND accepted credits). He has completed 4 complete semesters and is in hia first as a junior. Maintains two years of playing eligibility...

Yes and no. Granted I'm referring to two years ago, but I didn't see a lot of the deep outs the pros like to use. He can definitely throw it deep when he gets his feet planted. I suspect with the work he did and the weight training we should see a marked improvement. The little bit of spring practice I saw the ball looked like it jumps out of his hand like a rocket.

Agreed.

Here's his 50-yard bomb back (longest of the season) in 2012:

Seeing Kap jump up for the mid-air body high-five at the end was awesome.

That is what they said originally, that his arm velocity was spectacular, but his raw arm strength was not superior. I never understood that. So, when he played in '12 he needed to really set his feet to heave the ball long.

Always loved this play. Golson is off-balance and throw looks ugly and still is 60 yards in the air and a money ball.
