There are about a trillion easier ways to set a nuclear weapon off in the US. Not to mention how irrational it would be for a country to claim that. Paper tiger my ass, not being able to occupy a country (an issue as old as time) isn't the same as not being willing to wipe whole armies and peoples off the map. That we can still do, and better than ever.

Here's an example:

Two people exchange phone numbers who are standing right next to each other. Person A tells Person B their number. Person B then calls Person A. Person B says, "It's ringing." Person A looks at their phone and nothing has happened. Person B can hear 1-3 'rings' on their phone BEFORE Person A's phone begins to ring.

Part of my job in the Marines was to, how shall we say, 'understand how cell phones work'. There's a logical explanation for these 'phantom' calls but logic doesn't get clicks.

So, I've "lost" my phone after a night of drinking before. I've had buddies call it to see if its between couch cushions or what have you. How come when the phone is off or the battery is dead, there is never a 1-3 rings and then it goes to my voicemail. If my phone is dead or broken (from experience), calling it always results in the call going directly to voicemail. Does it just have to do with the proximity of the caller or something?

Some things to consider:

Grahmbo, when you were in the Marines, what kind of devices were out? I just ask because I know that would happen with basic phones from experience, but I've never heard of that for a smart phone.

Secondly, When the call is going over a country/ocean, would it make sense for it to ring once while trying to find the right device on the server or servers? So it rings, doesn't find the device, then goes to voicemail? IDK, but I imagine it works differently than calling someone in the same city.

Still want to know if these family members continued to call and if so, what was the result. IDK why that's not mentioned.

And any of you so-called South Park fans who did not laugh at my Mongolian joke, take 3 laps. Unacceptable.

The phone still has to ping to one or more towers before it reaches its destination which is why it can take a few seconds for a phone to ring even though the caller hears ringing. Other times you won't hear ringing and instead just silence before the phone call is connected. If a phone is dead then there's nothing to look for which results in direct to voicemail

I'm not Grahambo, and I'm no genius, but from personal experience, I have called my girlfriends smart phone, with my smart phone in the same room, and I get 1-3 rings before her phone begins to ring.

Also, I hadn't heard anything about this story. Anyone care to fill me in more? All I know is a 777 went down and there's been no sign of it since.

As Bogs pointed out, it depends on country, provider, spectrum, etc. Too much for an IE board to figure out. Just too many variables that we, IE, won't know.

I did this between 2004-2009 which would mark the first two generations of the iPhone.

Former San Diego State running back Adam Muema has surfaced, sources said Friday, ending the week-long mystery of his whereabouts since he left the NFL Scouting Combine on Sunday because of religious reasons.

Many in Muema's inner circle were concerned about his well-being. On Friday, the emotion was relief after sources said he arrived Friday morning at the Florida performance facility where he trained for the combine.

One source said he was still dressed in his combine gear.

Don't want to derail the thread too much, but on the topic of plane disasters, what did you all think of TWA Flight 800 some 18 years ago? I'm no crazy conspiracy theorist, but the conclusion of a faulty fuel tank as the cause was BS. I think it was a missile, fire by either friendly fire (missile testing by the Navy) or possibly fired by an individual.

Your phone (for sure) had the chance to already alert the network to its status. Maybe not so much, in all, or other situations.

Saw an article discussing past crashes and the thought that at least a couple of them could have been "suicide by pilot". It may explain why there was no distress signal sent.
