I lived in Madison for about five years. It is about 10 minutes north of Jackson. Jackson is a hrrible city with a severe crime issue. The local government is horrible and infighting has left the city worse for wear.

Jackson does have some great dining options however. You can find most of the better restaurants on County Line Road and a few on the outskirts of the city. A few of my favorites were Keifer's, Juleps, Ruths Chris, and Anjou.

If you are in to baseball, the Atlanta Braves Double A team plays there and it is a great atmosphere for the entire family. Vicksburg has a casino that is closer than the ones on the coast.

As far as the rest of Jackson, I would stray away as it is pretty dangerous as mentioned before. I always packed when I went in to Jackson. Glad I moved as I don't really care for the place at all. Madison is a great place. Ridgeland, Pearl, Clinton, and Brandon offer some good shopping, eating, etc. Canton has nothing of any value to see or do. I left nothing in Mississippi and really don't care if I ever see the place again.

I could substitute the names of towns, etc... and this is exactly how I feel about living in Buffalo. Even have the triple A team. lol

Never been to Buffalo but work with a guy who grew up there. He tells me horror stories of the winters there.

His stories probably didn't even give it justice. This winter has been the worst I have ever experienced in my life. We have had 106.5 inches of snow this season with a record amount days below freezing.

and the city sucks...

And some sweet tea!! I would suggest the fried crawfish tails as an appetizer.

I like quite a bit of soul/southern food… but crawfish I just can’t get into… very little meat to begin with and the one time I tried them I asked what all the little pink dots are and the waitress explained that “those are the babies, that one was pregnant.” And I just couldn’t eat anymore… No go on the crawfish.

I'll take reg old tea too...

But I do enjoy some good black eyed peas, greens, hush puppies, ox tail, stuff like that.

You ever dined on bone marrow, fried chicken skins, or pig brains. If done right, those are some good eats. Unfortunately, you mostly have to pay a premium to get those done right nowadays in Nashville. The restaurant and food business has absolutely exploded in Nashville recently.

Crawfish Etouffee is the best way to eat them, in my opinion. Have you tried that?

Also, I'm an unsweet tea guy. Always have been. So refreshing and tasty. People don't actually look at you funny for ordering it...I think they assume you'll doctor it up on your own.

Never once had Etouffee.. that only reason I even know what it is is due to Tommy Lee Jones' reference to it at the end of JFK...

I am born and raised in the South. If tea ain't sweet, it's just dirty water...

In case you start to talk with the women of the south.

"We eat our grits and we don't mind sweet in our tea boy."-- one of my favorite JJ Grey songs... theme of the song is outsiders coming to the South... fits the thread obviously.

Wow T, tell us how you really feel about MS. HAHA! Just kidding. You hit the nail on the head about the crime. We stay at a hotel on County Line Road when we go to State Championships. Plenty of places to eat & just down the road, we usually take the team to the mall.

It is true that people are friendly here in "tha 'Sip". MS is one of the poorest states, but here's what I am very proud of: we donate more than any other state. I read that just last week in The Clarion Ledger. They based it on average family income and amount reported in donations. I can tell you for a fact that up here in the northeast corner that when someone falls on hard times (lost job, sickness, death, house fire, etc), every Church within 30 miles (75 Churches would be a conservative estimate) will send money, clothes, food, etc. I have let a family live in my house for several months when they lost tier home to a fire. It is common to see flyers up at convenience stores for a benefit that weekend. I bought a recliner a couple of weeks ago at a benefit for a 12 yr old girl that was diagnosed with cancer. It was a new recliner that a local furniture factory donated & I didn't care to pay a little more than retail because 100% of the money went to the family.

Yep, things are a lot slower here, but it that really a bad thing? I speak to everyone. Heck, I wave at everyone when driving. If someone doesn't speak back, my first thought is that something is wrong. That's the general thought. If we find out something is wrong, we work together to help that person thru it. To me, that's worth going a little slower.

Okay the real question here is...

What if I don't like tea?

A good old [soda] or beer will do me over just fine.

We are able to import sodas and the well water is usually palatable Its soft too not like that northern hard water shit.

If you go to real deal mom and pop stores its usually sweet tea and lemonade.

Oh and be prepared for no beer/liquor/wine sales on Sunday. From what I know no alcohol is sold on Sundays and some counties do not allow the sale of liquor at all.

Kentucky is actually the worst. I remember having to drive 45 miles with my Irish G-Pa so he could go get his monthly stash.

The red are dry counties. Blue wet at least for 6 days of the week.

DO NOT ask for a "soda". Ask for a coke and they/we will ask you what kind...

I've heard this before and I've always wondered what do you say if you ask for a Coke and they say "what kind?"? Do you then say "a Coke" if you in fact actually want a soda that comes in a red can with white writing? Do they then ask you "what kind?" again? That could go on for days...

It has to work better than saying “I’ll have a pop please.” I always wondered about that one. Do you want a lollipop? popsicle? Are you wanting to get high? Do you want me to punch you?

Here in Cali we have this really crazy system,.. we state exactly what we want. I know it sounds crazy but try and follow me here… If you want a Diet Coke, you say, “I’ll have a Diet Coke.”… Want a Dr. Pepper? All you have to say is, “I’ll have a Dr. Pepper please.” It’s nuts, you can even add shit like, “ Can I have extra ice please?”
