Nice catches man! I was up in Northern IL for the past 4 days doing some whitetail hunting. Great weather and the deer were certainly moving. I saw at least 3 doe per sit, but nothing came into my shooting lanes. Still eating a tag sandwich. I'll be heading to southern IL over Thanksgiving, so hopefully I fill one then.

Anyone having any luck or seeing signs of the rut?

That is awesome. I don't know a thing about salt water fishing but that looks like that had to be a load of fun. I got to head south one winter and try that out.

Do you ever buy shiners? I sell shiners to a couple of different haulers that haul them to Florida weekly.

I don't usually go out on charters but some buddies of mine had a last minute cancellation so I joined. We limited out on grouper in about 3 hrs, so with our ice box full we went after kingfish, cobia, 'cuda, etc. Awesome trip man.

Not sure about the shiners... Do you know the breed? We mostly fish with live Pinfish, Pilchards, Threadfins, Grunts, and a few other local baitfish. If we use frozen bait it's sardines or Boston mackerel.

Wanted to bump this up.

Wooly, what are your top 5 US fly fishing destinations (trout only)? Any within striking distance of Philly? I still need to do a float on the Delaware...

I grew up fishing the classic PA streams (Penns Creek, Fishing Creek, etc.) and now have the cash and some fishing buddies to take some trips.

Also, you are in NY right? Where do you fish nowadays?

Paging Wooly!!!

Well, today was the day! I took some vacation time from work this afternoon to hit the woods during the rut, and bow was it worth it. I killed my first deer, and with a bow! She's a little one, but she'll fill the freezer and taste delicious.

She was about 18-20 yards out just beyond the brush pile in the middle of the picture here.

Bloody arrow.

And found her 60 yards from the shot. Double lung. These Slick Trick Magnums really do their job. Tore up the lungs and complete pass through.

I'm floating on cloud 9. There is no better feeling that the adrenaline pumping when drawn on a deer, even if she's a little doe. I'll be hitting the woods again saturday morning to look for Mr Bucky.

Don't know if this is against the rules, but wanted to let anyone who may be interested know:

I'm a Pro Staffer at Gobbler Down Custom Calls-turkey calls. This year, as in many past years, the staff is trying to obtain funds to send two wounded veterans on a turkey hunt in Nebraska. My time, the owner, and another hunter will be there during the duration. It's on our lease and we'll guide. Travel from VA to NE, and other outfitting costs are going to put the pinch on us. Gobbler Down has had raffles in the past and accepted donations.

This year, they have 3 Benelli Super Black Eagle II shotguns in MO bottom land camo to raffle off to help defray out of pocket costs. Head to the gobblerdown.com website or their FB page for details if you are interested. IMO, a great and worthy cause-AND a great gun. You decide.

Thanks!

Does anybody else fish for one-eyed trouser trout? I knew lots of SMC girls that did.

Sounds like an awesome cause, fbolt. Keep us updated on when we can enter. I'm always down to win a SBEII. That and a Citori are my dream guns.

Fbolt. I bought a ticket and got an empty email sent to me. So I don't know my raffle ticket number. Also, since I don't use the facebook, how do I find out what the winning numbers are?

Thanks!
Also good to know another man that does not have facebook

I'll check on that one Wooly/Cody re: the no number-an answer will be forthcoming.

Re: the winner, it will be announced on his webpage as well as on FB. I'll also post it here.

Just got off the phone with Sean, owner of Gobbler Down. He advised that he'll be emailing numbers and/or sending emails with photos of your actual raffle ticket. He is behind due to the initial high responses. Rest assured -it will be coming.

Thanks for the support guys. Let me clarify that the funds will cover only the vets-the others will be covering their own costs. Again, thank you. Any additional questions, advise and I will respond ASAP.

Took care of all issues. Please remember this is for wounded vets-I've seen the bios and it warms my cold, black, heart to know that I can help these guys in some small way.

If interested in the gun raffle, use the link above. If not interested in the raffle, buy a vet a drink at the next airport you find yourself in.

Prost!

Hey Fbolt. What are the dates for the drawing and the hunt? Are you going to post up pics/story from the hunt? I believe you said that you will be one of the guides, so it would be awesome to see some pics from their trip.

Date for the drawing is April 15th. The hunt is 1-7 May. I was planning on guiding the entire hunt but unfortunately my son's FHC is on the 5th, so I have to cash in some chits with the wife - at worst, I'll be arriving the 5th and then guide the last few days.

I have read one of the vets bios-well, not truly a bio as he was somewhat reticent writing about himself-instead, he deferred to a friend of his who simple provided us with a copy of his military award, a SS with V device, or something similar. Selfless action in the face of the enemy-caring about his fellow soldiers over his own needs. We picked a good one there!

When those details are ready to be shared, I will do so.

There will be a play by play on the hunt including photos. Everyone will share in the experience and I'll be sure to pass all along.

Thanks guys for your participation.

Hugh

I've been pestering all on this site for the shotgun raffle to help pay for the wounded veteran hunt I'm involved in with Gobbler Down Custom Turkey Calls. We're selling these tickets to raise funds to cover the costs of these two veterans to go hunting in NE with the Gobbler Down ProStaff. Very deserving IMO - you be the judge. Long post but please read.

From Sean, call company owner:

These are the guys you are supporting. They more than deserve it... This is the email I received after selecting James.
Thanks everyone for the ongoing support!

Hey Sean,
Again just wanted to thank you for all you guys do for vets and for inviting us on this hunt!
I'm not the best at talking about myself, so here's a link to an article that may be what you're looking for and it also has a picture.

Valor awards for James M. Takes

As far as background, I'm 30, born in Danville VA.
I have CC my nomination if you would consider him: Jeddah Deloria.
As I told you Jeddah was a member of my platoon during OEF8. He is a Purple Heart, BSMV recipient that has far exceeded his call to duty. During a well planned attack by anti-collation forces, SGT Deloria (then PFC) exhausted all ammunitions available at his post. The relentless enemy fire left Jeddah severely wounded, and was crushed under the weight of his post, which had collapsed due to RPG fire. At that time, the linear outpost had been overran by enemy combatants, SGT Deloria selflessly made the decision to detonate the claymore mines surrounding his position, possibly causing further injury to himself, and as he began to fade out of consciousness he zeroed out all frequencies in his radio eliminating his ability to communicate with allied forces while insuring the operational security of his unit. He is, by my definition, A True American Hero. He mentioned that he had a bio and a picture, as well, that may help.
Again thanks for everything and I'm looking forward to the hunt!

Here is the link to buy a raffle to purchase a raffle ticket for a chance to win a Benelli Super Black Eagle II shotgun (premium gun folks):

I received an email confirming and thanking me for my purchase, but nothing with a raffle number. There is a number in the email listed as 'purchase number'. Would this be my raffle number or should I expect another email?
