Had one of those last year...and ND managed a pedestrian running game.

That's cause GB was hurt, him and Folston were freshman, and BK wouldn't listen to me and give up on GAIII earlier.

Last year the backfield just had to stay afloat for a year, knowing from 2014 out we're going to have a very good running game.

And we played some great run defenses. Our coaches never established a running game. They never played back and forth from the play action game. In fact, on offense, all they tried to do is keep the quarterback from getting killed!

This year with a mobile quarterback I think you would have to imagine that we would do better, no?

I'm HOPEFUL ND has a great running game (the pieces SEEM to be there)...but I'm far from KNOWING they will (I'll have to see it to believe it).

I mean, none of us know, but I wouldn't be surprised if we have a top 5 rushing attack with those two next year.

A mobile QB, what should be a good OL, and talented RB's all are all a good recipe for a good running game. I'm worried about the bolded-- the coaches/playcalling.

All of the above is moot if there isn't a strong commitment from the coaches to pound the ball.

I'll also say I'm a bit worried about so many running plays starting out sideways/laterally, instead of vertically. Seems like Martin/Kelly, when they were wanting to run the ball, called an awful lot of those. I understand the reasoning for the nature of those runs, but those plays seemed to be feast or famine. It seemed like the runs with an initial forward movement were bankable for a minimum of a couple yards.

Important to keep in mind that for 2014, Kelly plans a more uptempo offense.

Kelly expects more dynamic offense with mobile QB | College Football

Denbrock, whose promotion from passing game coordinator was announced Thursday, said Friday that after four years of adapting to the personnel, the Irish have the personnel to make Kelly's up-tempo offense work.

"He likes to go fast. He likes to keep the defense on their heels. He likes to be very aggressive with what he does," he said.

Kelly used a no-huddle, hurry-up spread attack at Cincinnati that in 2009 finished fourth in the nation in scoring at 38.6 points a game, eighth in passing offense at 309 yards a game and 11th in total offense at 447 yards a game. In four years at Notre Dame, the Irish have ranked in the top 50 in total offense only once, ranking 35th in 2011. The highest they ranked in scoring offense was 49th that same year at 29.2 points a game.

I believe that with a mobile QB, 3 solid RB's (yes, I'm counting Bryant), and a strong passing attack, the Irish can gain some yards and possibly improve ypc.

However, with all these tools, I also want the Irish to be able to have a dominant running game in the 4th quarter-when they're running out the clock with the game on the line. Physically imposing OLmen and bruising North-South runners-I think that's what we all miss (and it's probably posted right above this post-haven't read them all).

I thought at first that you were wrong and assumed ND updated the roster site more. But you may be right. Everett still isn't listed on there, and Davaris still is listed.

Ya, they only update twice a year: spring practice and fall camp.

If there is a transfer in between those events, then that is the other time there is an update with the roster.

Good observation. The last two years with EG & TR, when we ran from under center, we dominated the LOS.

Greg Bryant has never played one down and Folston has started how many games? But of course we are gonna have a top 5 running game were fucking Notre Dame baby! I would be thrilled with a top 30 running game.

What 5 RB tandems are guaranteed to be better than Folston/Bryant?

What puts ND in the top 5?!!

Oregon
Texas
Alabama
A&M
OU
Florida
Florida State
Wisconsin
South Carolina
Georgia has the best backfield in America

I am sure I'm missing about 10 teams that will be better

The only one I can think of for sure is Gurley and Marshall. I don't follow backs too much tbh

I'll give you Oregon and Alabama. The rest I definitely don't know enough to say they'll definitely be better than Folston/Bryant.

Do you actually know their personnel or are you just throwing fancy names out there?

someone hit on it a few posts back, but the success of the RB's is going to be heavily reliant on how quick our O line gels with the 1 possibly 2 new starters depending on how Nick martin progresses through his injury though all prognosis at this point has been positive.

very interested to see who takes over at LT

Not one of those teams was in the top 5 in rushing last year either.

Georgia… "who has the best backfield in America" weren't a top 50 rushing team last year.

Ok but you gotta remember the top 5 rushing teams in the country are all option teams or the veer. I love the potential of Bryant and what Folston has shown but how can you put them in the top 5. Gurley or Marshall would be starting for ND. Georgia 3rd string back in Michel would get major carries for ND this year.

This has nothing to do with Greg Bryant, but a simple keystroke apostrophe can make a difference.

I may be an old fart and a grammar hammer asshole, but I do tire of translation efforts at times.

Particularly when claiming "We are ND!"

Screw me, screw you ...
