Lou Somoyogi at BGI today, said that 2012 defense was the best defense he has seen at ND in the last 30 years and maybe the best for the next 30. Why wouldn't the DC of that team not get a lot of credit for that. I know for a fact that Manti and his boys do.

Love Diaco. Think Diaco's over-rated. Whatever. We need interior defensive linemen. We're offering all over the place this week. Why not offer Griffin and get him to visit?

Loy is hearing that he should be getting a visit from Elston towards the end of this week or next. When he asked Griffin he replied "I think so, but I'm not sure yet."

About defense and defensive coordinators.

You will see the rest of the story when you see if BVG attacks the Navy defense in years to come. Now you may say that the secondary is improving. Because I think BVG will dare Navy to throw and shred their option offense, right out of the blocks.

Also, what I want to see is how much of the defensive game plan involves game long plans; not just half time adjustments.

With 2012, Manti Te'o made that offense. Because he reacted and flowed, or was allowed to, which ever story you believe. He was everywhere. Look at the tapes. Junior year he was heavier and bound by reading keys. Senior year he was neither. Interesting the conversations that must have taken place before the announcement at the Lott Awards Manti's junior year!

And remember, that team '10, 11, '12 had two safeties that are doing pretty well for themselves in the NFL.

Would agree. You have to go back to Ara's teams. His were in the top categories all the time.

Nor can I. Why can't we just give him a conditional offer that says, "Hey we really just want to be sure on your measurables, your fit, and your academic house before we accept a commit from you, but you do have an offer." That seems like the best way to handle this to me, but it seems that everybody wants what they want right now or they'll take their ball and go someplace else to play.

i'd think a visit to the school and measuring him ourselves would suffice wouldn't it?

You would think so, but who knows with the way DT recruiting has gone. It's this giant enigma to me that we don't show enough interest or nobody wants playing time.

I'm guessing you meant offense and I agree. It always frustrated me to watch us wait and react against Navy. That made their cut blocking even tougher to deal with. Take advantage of the size and speed and destroy the offense before it gets a chance to do something.

players are taught to slow play against option teams though, identify the cut block and disengage with your hands and then locate the ballcarrier. hard to play fast against it

or you can play it like dan fox and run full speed into a cut block as the rb skips past as he's on the ground. danny spond was a master of playing the cut block/option..was sorely missed this year

Wouldn't that be a secret weapon now! I meant attack their option with our defense.

With all respect, Dub, (after all, I wouldn't want you getting any ideas and cutting one of my lungs out!), but the only place I ever saw anyone talk about slow playing the option as the correct response is this last year at ND! Ever.

Ever read about Sisyphus? His job was easier, than slow playing a defense like Navy. Because what no one ends up saying is that once Navy gets a team on its heels, it ends up implementing a zone blocking scheme, which constitutes murder or at least manslaughter in three states and DC. Any potentially slashing offense is the way to defeat a two gap defense. Look at Navy '10-'13, Bama, Pitt 13, USC '11, etc., etc. Tape don't lie.

Yup. Wouldn't be surprised to see Elston extend an "offer" tonight to lock in that OV late in the cycle. The end of this cycle is going to be very fast and loose.
