Charles Nelson, WR, 5-10, 180, Seabreeze High School, Daytona Beach, FL is another receiver that Notre Dame would like to add to their roster on signing day. Like Quick, Nelson is being courted by a number of suitors and will have a tough decision to make on signing day. And also like Quick, Nelson is going down to the wire visiting schools and gathering information.

“I’m going to USC next weekend,” Nelson informed ISD. “The weekend after that I’m going to West Virginia. On Sunday I come back and go to Florida and then the 30th I go to Oregon.”

While some might be overwhelmed by that hectic schedule, Nelson is relishing it.

“It’s going to be good to see everything and everybody,” he said. “It’ll be O.K.”

Nelson doesn’t have a specific list of things he’s looking for on his visits, but just wants to take in everything about each of the schools. One thing that he does plan to do, though, is use Notre Dame as the barometer by which he will judge all other visits and according to Nelson, the Irish set the bar very high.

“The campus, it’s a nice place,” he said of his Notre Dame visit. “The community is pretty great. I got to meet a bunch of players that I could see myself playing with and all of that stuff.”

Nelson plans to have a decision ready following his Oregon visit but acknowledged that it might take him a bit longer.

“I’ll probably know after my last visit,” he explained. “If not, I’ll take some time and it’ll be on Signing Day.”

Glad we set the bar pretty high. Hopefully the distance will be a big factor working against USC & Oregon.

If it's between McKenzie and Nelson for a spot, and McKenzie is still iffy, I say go with Nelson if he has the grades. Both sound like they're high on ND, hopefully that holds as Nelson takes his visits.

McKenzie is our top target. We would prefer him even to Quick, per BGI.

Well, if he does end up being 100% qualified, I hope he can keep it buckled down if he signs. Would suck if he makes it, then can't cut it at the next level and we end up with another hole.

That seems like spin to me.

It is. If we can get either Nelson or Quick, we'll take them and not even think twice about it.

Yeah, I suppose I should have included a "fwiw" in my original post. I don't disagree with either of you and wouldn't blame the staff if they snatched up Nelson or Quick right away.

May not mean much but I like when ND is listed 1st. Could be he just went alphabetically though OU is at the end but it's always good to know you weren't the last school he thought to put in his top 4.

Per USC rivals, his visit to USC is going swimmingly well, and he might be ready to commit, but they aren't sure if they have the numbers to accept his commitment.

None of this should be a surprise. Figured that he would love USC, figured that they'd be strapped for room. ISD said a month ago that in the end ND might be his best option even though he likes other schools more. He better hope that Oregon likes him enough to take his commitment, unless USC gets rid of yet another commitment...

I don't understand why these kids take visits if the school doesn't have the room!?

Because they might have room...you never know for sure. With kids decommitting all the time, as a school you have to cover your bases, and as a player it makes sense if you really like the school.

As for Nelson, reports are that he wanted to commit but with two more visits planned, both parties decided it would be better to be sure. In other words, USC doesn't have room right now but they might come NSD.

IMHO, Notre Dame is a major fallback for him. If USC and Oregon don't have room, then MAYBE he'll choose ND over WVU. No inside info, just reading the tea leaves. He has made no mention of ND to recruits or reporters this weekend as far as I have read. Hopefully I'm wrong, but I've never had the feeling that he was truly feeling ND these past couple of months...

I agree, especially since we were late coming to the party.

Seabreeze's Charles Nelson loves USC visit; Oregon up next

He said it's too soon to choose a favorite, but USC certainly impressed the 5-foot-9, 170-pound Nelson, who is the No, 1-ranked player in the Sentinel's 2014 Super60. He actually rates USC and Notre Dame even after visits there.

"They were pretty much exactly the same. They both showed me a great time, both schools are great, both coaching staffs are great ... so I really don't have an order for them," Nelson said.
