Not even close. There are very, very few TEs that have the blocking potential of Troy Niklas.

Exactly

Best case scenario for Troy is he physically dominates the combine (will happen) and some team falls in love with him thinking this kid can already block like a NFL TE we just need to coach him up a little before we got our own Gronk 2.0 whereas guys like Ebron or Amaro will never ever be able to block like Niklas.

So basically your saying the Pats will draft him.

With Gronk being hurt often lately, and rookies not costing near as much as they use to, they could end up with 2 monster TE. They have switched to more of a running team this year and have a great blocking TE would help with their stable of backs.

He is going to be an awesome player in the NFL. He needs no more football development at the college level. Him staying another year just risks injury.

Wish him the best, best of luck. Hope he is a Dolphin or Colt.

Hope he gets his degree too. If he doesn't already have it.

Agree with every word of this report. I think Niklas has, by far, the highest ceiling of any tight end ND has put in the NFL since Bavaro. Someone's going to pick him early and be rewarded in a few years.

I still think the TE that's has the highest ceiling from ND and the most talented ND has bad in Kyle Rudolph.

wouldn't be surprised in the least to see the Pats draft him at the (very?) end of the first round.

I still can't blame him for going to the draft if he is drafted in the second round instead of risking injury at ND next year

if he'd potentially be the #1 TE next year i can see him going above guys listed above him due to his ceiling and his elite-ness as a blocker....was skeptical at first, but the more i think about it i think he made the right decision for himself

I think that's exactly what they are looking at. Stay healthy, improve, play through 1st contract with one less year of Cap liability and then get a great second contract.

This thread is still going lol?

Is it odd to speculate on how a player who declared for the draft, last week, will fare in the NFL? should we lock the thread now that he's not going to be playing next year?

not sure why this discussion would make you laugh out loud

I am not laughing its just that all Notre Dame messages boards have been in meltdown mode over this. Troy made a decision to go make millions and millions of dollars. Some think its a bad idea and some think its a great idea. I think its a great idea and just shows how awesome BK has devolved players. I think its a great move for Troy and only wish him the best. Why shouldn't we be excited about one of our guys going to the NFL?

Because sending guys to the NFL comprises literally zero percent of my Notre Dame fanhood. I want to see top-10 seasons and men who graduate. This decision hurts both of those things. I don't judge Troy as a human being because this might be the right decision for him, and that's fine, but within the scope of Notre Dame football, this is a negative thing. We will field a worse team in 2014 than we would have with him starting at TE.

I interpreted 'lol' to indicate laughter of some sort. anyway not much meltdown here, just some discussion about where he'll go in the draft and how good he'll be in the league.

I understand that. But earlier in the thread there was minor meltdown and on the 4HL there is still a meltdown going on

All due respect....who gives a shit what comprises your fanhood? Putting guys in the league means we are getting talented guys to come to ND, that the staff is doing a good job developing them, and that guys who want to play in the NFL and have a realistic chance at doing so will think of ND as a place that can help them get there. Do you want kids who only think they are going to play pro football? Probably not. But try building a college football team out of guys who don't want to.

Ha I love when people get pissy because someone expresses his opinion on a DISCUSSION BOARD.

His cousins all went to USC, and that is where he was headed.

Mathews from the day they are born are assessing draft status.

The NFL is currently sucking the life blood from college football; smarter guys than me can explain how that is working, (that over a hundred more guys from D1 schools are leaving this year than on average.) Be mad at them, they the real whores!

NBA has done the same to college bball. It is absolutely unwatchable until the tournament. I miss the games of 10-12 years ago, where guys stayed for at least 3 years, talent level was so much better, rivalries were real, etc.

However, the free market capitalist in me doesn't blame the kids like Kyrie Erving or Jabari Parker for jumping after a year.

In the long run, with football over basketball, even, when careers are ended early, over catastrophic injuries on too physically immature of frames, tell me that the money was worth it for the source, the fans. The fans because they buy the propaganda, think they are getting what they want. They are really getting fleeced. And these kids are getting used up and spit out. They (many) end up with less than the fans.

Simply this is not an esoteric dogmatic argument of political and economic principle; it is the fact(s) of modern American Professional Sport.

I don't think the solution is "make kids stay for 3+ years" (and I'm not sure if that's what you're suggesting either way). I think the solution is "don't make kids go to college in the first place. If they're good enough, let them play." College sports will be nothing but #RKGs.

I understand what you're saying, but there is a conflict that exists in your statement... in order to see top-10 seasons, you need guys like Troy and Tuitt that are talented enough to leave a year early. Then you reload and do it again. That's how teams at the top do it. But that sacrifices the "seeing men who graduate" aspect sometimes, so it shouldn't be upsetting when both of those things do not mesh at all times.

Sometimes you have a Troy Niklas. He makes your team better and leaves a year early.
Sometimes you have a Tyler Eifert. He makes your team better and stays an extra year.
