If Kelly stops getting NFL interest it probably means our performance has fallen to a level where he might need to be replaced anyways.

What if he just keeps saying no? Interest would drop off.

Love Smith and Jim Caldwell, amoung others, are both available and much better qualified than Brian Kelly. However, knowing the ineptitude of the Detroit management I suspect they will make Kelly an offer.
A college coach is successful because he is a very good to great recruiter with 17 and18 year old kids. A pro coach is successful only if he has a great quarterback in place.

Chip Kelly would disagree.

The fact that Lovie is still out there makes me wonder about race being a bigger factor than I usually think with these jobs... Da hell has he not been hired yet??

I've never understood the love for Lovie. He always has seemed like an average head coach to me, with no real big upside. Almost like a slightly worse version of Jeff Fisher.

Rather then race it is probably more about style. Smith is an ex-DC and based on the evolution of NFL rules it is more abut offense in the NFL. Most fans want to see a high powered offense scoring tons of points and Smith rightly or wrongly is considered a defensive minded coach. Additionally, while his head coaching record is not bad it is not awesome either. His teams made the playoffs three out of nine years.

Lovie took over a moribund franchise with little talent and tight fisted ownership and won more games than he lost. Certainly he's not a great offensive coach but he seemed to have no issues with delegating. He also seemed to be a great CEO type of coach who attracted great assistant talent and let them do their thing. When Lovie was fired Rod Marinelli decided to take a demotion rather than remain with the Bears.

I am not arguing that he is not a good coach. Actually I personally think he did a pretty good job given the talent on the Bears. I am just saying one of the reasons he is not getting a job might be because he is not perceived as an offensive minded coach.

I certainly won't argue against that point... I'm on my phone and started my response before I saw your post. So, I wasn't disagreeing with you.

Anyway, Lovie has only been a candidate for one offseason so I don't think there is any need for hand wringing on his behalf.

Chip Kelly would disagree.
Let's see what he does with his own team. He currently is playing with Andy Reid's team and the quarterback Reid selected and was grooming to take over.
Nick Foles has a 7-2 record as a starter, one of the losses was to Dallas when he was KO'ed of the game with a concussion. He is 6-1 since his return. He leads the NFL in QB ratings. He has two interceptions to go with his (so far) 25 TD passes. He also has tied the NFL record of TD passes in a game (seven). With a quarterback like that, I think I could coach that team.
I suspect Philadelphia will rue the day they let Andy Reid get away.

Lol are you serious? Kelly has taken Foles and made him an elite QB this year. Kelly has brought toughness to that team and his offense is fantastic (McCoy is having his best year yet).

To think a 2nd year QB that should little signs of being a franchise QB his first year is making chip Kelly look good and not the opposite is really hard to believe.

Kelly is not an NFL caliber coach. He needs to stay in the college game, just as Charlie should have stayed in the NFL.

Awwww, what do you know! Weis TRIPLED his wins this year with 3! Were you not impressed with his 34-0 loss to Iowa State?

So, last year, when Kelly interviewed with Philadelphia, a lot of people were behind him doing that with comments like "it's good to test the waters and see what you are worth", "it's good experience for when he does want to go", etc. It pissed me off because I look at ND as a final destination and not a stepping stone. Not because I'm a diehard fan, I just think there are certain schools that are elite enough to be a destination...that is how Lou viewed ND.

When he stayed at ND after the interview last year I had the impression that looking at the NFL was something he did because, like all players that dream of playing in the NFL, coaches dream of coaching in the NFL. However, after the process was complete, he realized he prefers to work and mold young men and college is the right fit for him. If this is true...what would be the reason to interview with Detroit 11 months later? DO NOT LIKE!!

Why would he hire a DC if he was possibly leaving. He would probably know in a week if he got the Detroit job. Doesn't make sense. Kelly's staying.

I asked my buddy who hangs out with several of the coaches and he said it is true. He's tied up right now but is going to try and text me more detail later when he gets home.

Again, he is really busy right now and sent a quick two word text "yes true". He could have been saying "yes it's true there is a rumor out there" or he could have been saying "yes it's true he is interviewing".

I could see Kelly maybe interviewing with the Lions. However I don't see how the Fords paying buy-outs for Schwartz and Kelly then signing Kelly. Actually wouldn't be surprised if Schwartz stayed another year with how cheap the Fords are.

I hope the board of trustees shows Kelly the door if he interviews and doesn't accept. This bullsht needs to stop. This is such a stain on our program.

Does not look good to have a Head Coach with a foot constantly out the door.

I really want to believe this, but why interview Monday if he is staying?
Because the bowl game was Saturday? I mean what good would interviewing during bowl prep be? It would surround the program with all the questions in regards to the hire and possibly lead to a team losing focus. It is no rush and getting him in place after the bowl game was probably the plan all along.

Edit: Thought I was in replacing Diaco thread, and we were talking about new DC.

Schwartz buyout is 12 mil alone. I can't imagine BKs being small considering his flirtation with the NFL last year and then signing a new contract.
