Wasn't he out for the year at Ohio State?

He would have been playing for a different team, been in different situations and under different coaches. So him being hurt at OSU doesn't mean he would have been hurt here.

Butterfly effect and whatnot...

haha yeah I don't like that thinking so much. Granted, assuming the chances of a guy getting hurt is like ~3% (totally made up), it's unfair in the comparison to assume he wouldn't be hurt.

Schutt was on pace to do big things this season, but there's a chance he that won't ever happen because of the young 5:s: studs coming online now.

He could have grown wings and descended straight into heaven after leading Notre Dame to a national title and winning the Heisman...

I am just curious if you guys actually liked his film? Nothing in particular jumped out at me. Or did you guys just want to fill a body back there?

I think he has huge upside based on size and athleticism. He needed to be coached up, for sure, and the game looked fast to him, by I was looking forward to having his size and athleticism waiting to mature. He reminds me of Hardy, who I am a big fan of

With the class we already have, I'm all for passing on guys like Hendrix this year and opening up spots for 5th years and/or 2015 recruits. I hate to see a kid that wants to be at ND get turned away, but that's life. I'll be rooting for him.

I largely agree with this. People always like a shiny new toy, but taking a guy that at best will be a marginal player and have him take up a scholarship for 4 years is not always a good idea just because you can. Of course you always need to account for depth and have special teams players, but we will have one more spot for next year if we need it. I think Hendrix is good enough that he could have developed into a rotational player, but I wouldn't argue with the staff over this one.

Talking about Schutt as a player or the FACT that we have weak NT depth?

It wasn't a FACT when we recruited Schutt, which then brings it back to even if he signed there's no reason to believe he wouldn't have transferred after Nix breakout season, seeing Day, then going balls Deep for EV, thus making the speculative rationale pointless

The difference here is we still have a lot of young talented Safeties, in a log jam, in a position that doesn't traditionally rotate, and at the most, we sign as many as were losing

IDK why we'd take a safety if it wasn't juju. I'd bet my bottom dollar that Drue will be a safety now with the amount of lbs were bringing in. I have no problem with the staff telling him to hold on.

Kinda like now with the safety depth? Ironic...

The rest of your post follows the same line. You don't like the opinion that we should have taken him, so you are poo poo'ing the logic behind it. Despite it being the same exact argument you are making for the staff passing on Schutt.

This is a Notre Dame recruiting board. If we didn't live in the world of "hypotheticals" and "what if's" then we would just be sitting around in a circle jerk.

I actually don't care if we take him or not .. I'm poo pooing the logic behind the dramatic posts for not taking our 7th safety and those comparing a single Safety position to a rotational DL position

I'm kind of with this. If we got him I would've been happy about it, but the fact is we didn't and of all the other crap we've had to deal with the last couple of years I don't think this is even close to the worst thing to happen to us. That said I don't like how it went down but it's over, so back to our beers.

Bold prediction: Not taking Payton Hendrix will not affect any of our next 5 seasons. Seriously, his film is okay, and we do not have a safety crisis on the horizon. Comparing NT to safety is kind of asinine. Nose tackle is a very specified and hard-to-fill position with the size and strength it requires. Finding safeties is much easier.

True. S, WR, and RB are probably the easiest positions to find "good enough" players for in CFB.

All this means is that Collinsworth will for sure be invited back if we whiff on Juju. So next year you'll have a serviceable veteran instead of a project player that can't/won't contribute. And then you'll have an extra scholly for a small 2015 class where it can be used on a comparable or better safety prospect... or another player of need.

Like we've been saying, the staff is at the point now where the only "needs" are ILB and returner... so they'll be looking to take Morgan and an explosive player if they can get one... and then after that they're only going to take guys they consider difference makers because otherwise you can bring back a quality 5th year and save it for a guy they really like in '15.

But if he grew wings, he would ascend to heaven. And I can go for all of this, but "grow wings"? Come on. Never happen, man. :)

two poo poos. what a night!

All I know is I am getting sick of hearing about "another scholly for a small class." Like we've filled one yet....(not a shot at Lax as he was last to post that statement)
