any chance this hurts us with any of our current commits/targets.

just asking i don't think it does, but i was curious to everyone else's opinion.

how involved was he in nyles' recruitment?

I'd be very happy with this, but it makes you wonder why someone hasn't snapped up or Whitfield or Clarkson yet. Maybe they make too much money already with their private tutoring gigs?

I just think those guys have found their niche and will keep milking it for all it's worth. I bet they make bank.

Yes. The power spread that Auburn and Clemson use to great effect is clearly Kelly's ideal offense. Wish I knew more about that coaching tree-- I have no idea which coaches are affiliated with it and might consider an assistant role at ND.

I do know that Auburn's OC has been a Malzhan guy since the Arkansas days. Not sure we'd be able to hire him anyway. I also think most of the Malzhan coaching tree is with him at Auburn.

If they hire outside of staff, then I've heard Jeff Quinn as a popular name. I'd recommend Philip Montgomery from Baylor. As much as I'd like to nab an Auburn OC (either Lashlee or Craig) neither are leaving Auburn (Lashlee is a Malzahn disciple and Craig is an former AU QB).

Same with the OC at Baylor... been with Briles forever.

I think the excitement in this thread about potential replacements sort of shows why Coach Martin leaving will be a huge benefit to ND long-term. Nice guy, wish him the best, but I've been ready for a change for a while now.

Doesn't Dilfer have a connection to Notre Dame? A daughter who's a student? During the Elite 11, Trent had high praise for Malik, and thought Notre Dame was a good fit for his skills. The possibility has me intrigued!
yes daughter who is going to or is playing volleyball

They do, but wrongly, I think. I remember when Kelly was hired at ND, someone forwarded to me an email written by a former player for Kelly at CMU who called Quinn a "meathead" who was really just an effective stand-in/manager for Kelly himself. Kelly's offense has struggled a bit since he came to ND, no question, but it's not because he lost Quinn.

I agree. Bad luck and personnel strike me as bigger reason why this offense hasn't been as potent. Also, Kelly admittedly said that he changed his philosophy of football when he came to ND. He put a lot of focus in building solid grounds on defense. Something he couldn't do in his other jobs.

It took longer then we/he expected, but the offense is coming along as early as next year. Our personnel should be very dynamic next year.

Not sure about Nussmeir but Morris makes a nice coin and is one of the highest paid assistants in the country. It'd be a lateral move for him to ND.

IDK, Clemson will never win the ACC.....ever.... lol. ;) Also he is the highest paid assistant at a public school. Assistant HC with Diaco and OC?

Nussmier makes like $600K.

eh one can dream...

The excitement is natural, but let's not pretend that Martin was somehow the primary factor holding our offense back over the last couple seasons. He and Kelly were two peas in a pod; we heard over and over about how much trust and systemic understanding the two shared.

Maybe we've just been unlucky with QBs, and Rees wasn't capable of running Kelly's power spread. Or maybe Kelly realizes that it's time to make some changes. Either way, Martin's departure probably won't be the catalyst for an offensive renaissance in South Bend.

Kelly and Denbrock first coached together 25 years ago, so I guess we'll see how highly Kelly thinks of his offensive mind really soon.

General question in this context: is it considered bad form for a new coach to poach his former program, esp. if it's an unhappy or underused kid? I assume it is, but I really don't know.

I was looking forward to Martin calling plays with Golson at the helm. Oh well. Denbrock would be decent, but I think Alford is definitely top of the list for a promotion. He's been loyal to the staff despite a coaching change and overtures from other schools. But if we want a playcaller, we'll have to turn elsewhere.
