Any way one of the board elders could schedule a time for an open forum history lesson? So us lesser fans can learn what we are ignorant on, and become 'die hard' enough for the rest?

Haha I know you're being funny but I would actually be down for something like this. Maybe even a monthly podcast. Let's make this happen

I choose Wooly to do the podcast. It can be called, "Hey dumbass, you call yourself a fan?" :)

For what it's worth, any fan on this board has seen Rudy. For that reason, at a minimum they should know these 10 references from ND history:

The Four Horsemen.

Knute Rockne.

Moose Krause.

Angelo Bertelli.

Johnny Lujack.

Leon Hart, Terry Hanratty, Jack Snow.

John Lattner.

Paul Hornung could have dressed in this locker.

FIFY. You are a lousy fan

I volunteer to moderate. I don't have a lot of knowledge but I'm good at asking questions!

Very well said. I respect and enjoy the vast history Notre Dame has and its one of the reasons I am a fan, but forgive me for not knowing a player who played here when my mom was a toddler. Being a historian isn't a criteria of what I consider a fan. Following, supporting and watching games when the team is good or bad are pretty much my only criteria.

It's not about being an historian. If someone told you that they had no idea who Babe Ruth or Ty Cobb were, then you would not consider them to be a serious fan of baseball.

Both of those names have had a hell of a lot more media mention than Hanratty.

I just kind of wonder when I needed to have learned of Terry Hanratty and by what method and for what reason.

I know who he is, but that's because his son is here now and that has led to it being reported on recently. I can't say that I would know otherwise and I don't think it makes me less of a fan that I didn't know until I was in my 20s. I'm not sure I'm more of a fan now that I know.

being ignorant is always less than being knowledgeable.

That's relative.

I've heard Hanratty's name mentioned in numerous ND broadcasts, over the years. I've yet to hear Babe Ruth or Ty Cobb mentioned during one of them.

But I do think that "we" should be less harsh about the less knowledgeable among us.

Lead, Follow, or get the hell out of the way.

First of all, thats not true at all. If someone told you they watch 162 games, + spring training + potential playoffs for every year they have followed a team, since they have started following a team, would you not call them fans? Secondly, is Terry Hanratty to college football what Ty Cobb or Babe Ruth are to baseball? Lastly, making your own parameters on what should be knowledgeable and what isn't, isn't a very good way to go about it. Knowing players before your time tells you nothing, but the persons interest in history or their age.

Don't believe I've heard Hanratty (the dad) a handful of times this year, Cobb and Ruth probably more than that per week, and its not even baseball season. But thats relative

kmoose, I see your point. I'm surprised he didn't know, but that doesn't mean he's not a true fan IMHO. But I get what you're saying...we just disagree. No worries.

My problem, and I think goirish41's problem with it, is that he was called 'pathetic' by a poster. Was that necessary? And then that same poster, when called out on it, still says it's 'shameful'. Kuenjha could've easily lied, looked it up on google, and made it seem like he knew all about him. Instead, he was honest about it. IMHO, there shouldn't have been an attempt made to humiliate him, regardless of his past. Bust his balls a bit? Sure lol. But this wasn't what happened. That was many of our problems with it.

I think goirish has a valid opinion that we were debating. I think you got called out for creeping through a month of my posts in another thread and came into this one to come at me here. Shoot, I walked away from this argument and you are purposely trying to bait me into a fight with you here. Classic troll job by a guy with an obvious, longtime vendetta.

In regards to the argument at hand, let's all agree that if you are a fan of the team, knowing the all time great players is a good thing. Hanratty played in "the greatest game ever played" and won a title for ND. If you don't know his, or the '66 team's story, then do yourself a favor and read up on it.

Now back to watching us hopefully come back on the Trees.

I look at it like this. The history that Notre Dame has is what separates it from other college football programs. While I'm not going to call people shitty fans or anything, I think its important to know what made Notre Dame so special throughout the years. If we just look at 1988 on, then Notre Dame wouldn't really be "that" special.

Well said. If someone was born after '88 and doesn't know our history, then what exactly are they basing their view of our tradition on?

Just read through the thread and I can't believe there are "die hard fans" who don't know who Terry Hanratty is. I wouldn't know him if I saw him in a bar today, but I sure as hell know the name and era the guy played.

I'm in no way, shape, or form a New York Yankees fan but they might be the only similar sports institution to compare Notre Dame football to. If the guy had said, "Joe Montana? Did he play for ND?" That's unforgivable and would require immediate surrender of both man and fan cards. It would be like saying, "I think I recognize the name Babe Ruth, but to be honest I'm not sure if he every played for the Yankees but I'm a die hard fan."

Terry Hanratty doesn't quite rise to that level, but it would be similar to a "die hard" Yankees fan not knowing who Thurmon Munson was. All Star, MVP, World Champion.

I do my best not to judge the "level of fandom" for good people who share a love of mine, but I'd roll my eyes at that one after the conversation ended if it happened in person.

Ummm, I posted on this thread before you did, so I'm not sure how I came to this thread looking to start a fight. Never even mentioned you, but nice try. I'd call you 'pathetic', but that's not my thing; you've cornered the market on that type of posting (see: seemingly every dang thread you post in, especially the banned posters thread).

But hey, keep trying to humiliate other Irish fans instead of just talking to them...it's noble work you're doing.

Definitely the latter, it's bad enough dealing with the hordes of mindless husks that make up most CFB fans in my state so I don't get into a purity contest with the Irish faithful.

To preface this, I know Hanratty and have many autographs from the greats. But instead of laughing and pointing fingers, could some of you ND historians recommend some books for those who don't have them to read? Let's help a fan out instead of tearing them to bit. Great, thanks.

Haha... For real? Your post quoted me and was obviously referring to me. Also, insulting other posters "isn't your thing"? You do realize that you're the only poster ever to write an obscenity laced manifesto of hate before getting temporarily banned, right?

Troll like a champion today, you creepy little bastard.

No one was "rolling their eyes" at a poster with less knowledge of the team. We were pointing out how absurd it was for someone that is so serious about the team as to post here daily and tattoo himself with the teams logo to not know one of the all time great players.

That's the wooly I love! Attaboy!

Never said I was an angel. In fact, quite the opposite. I apologized to all I wronged (I didn't wrong you or the other guy in that manifesto...meant every word i said and you've proven me right ever since); unlike you I don't act like that anymore (I've never posted like you do though...you're on another level).

And the post I was talking about, I quoted kmoose and was talking to him. Never named names. If you were the guy who I was referring to who was out of hand, well, don't get out of hand. And if you don't believe me, just read the posts above me. Even guys that agree with you admit they wouldn't act like you do. But sadly, as you have proven all day, you are oblivious to it all.

Follow along. Do better next time.

And no one called the poster 'pathetic' but you. Stop using 'we'.

I haven't shown any oblivion. In fact, nothing I have said isn't fact. Are you denying that you just quoted me directly? Are you denying that you did so after I walked away? Are you denying that you did so several hours after I walked away?

You obviously don't deny attacking me in your crazy mic drop post, despite me not even checking the site for several days before. Do you know another member actually had to text me to tell me about it? That's how long you held onto your hate for me. If you wouldn't have been a mod previously ( the worst one ever by far, universally agreed upon) then you would have been banned permanently for that outlandish behavior.

So don't come in here, riding on your high horse, accusing me of attacking defenseless posters when you had possibly the most offensive post ever on this site. Not to mention, you openly admitted to searching over a month of my posts looking for fodder to attack me with.... Seriously, how pathetic is that?

My ten foot pole slipped from my hands.

Pity, that.

As disturbing as it might be, the image of of a trolling Mod, be it of the fishing or under-the-bridge-ogre-type you evoke is delightful --- and accurate.

Carry on.

GO IRISH!

Fuck Michigan.

USC sucks can't be spelled without three of the four capitalized letters.

What is the square root of Pi?
