We just had this discussion in another thread... quoting my self:

There is little doubt in my mind that when he's done developing he's going to be a hand on the ground type of guy. He has a big frame and should be able to bulk up a ton. He's also a serious project player with a low floor, high ceiling... so maybe we'll never see him at all.

No, 6'6" in and of itself is not too tall for an OLB (see: Trent Murphy for Stanford, etc.)... and it's very possible you see him playing as a true OLB with this speed... but I'd personally bet against it relative to some other prospects. I think Williams and Trumbetti are destined to be much more DE types.

Recruiting is sales...you tell the recruit whatever he wants to hear. You find a position for him when he gets here

And love this kids rangy game. Great pick up for ND. Welcome Jhonathon.

I think this is worthy of a thread. This is going to be really important with this class at this time in the program. This isn't about the 85.

I only have Andrew, DeShone, Justin and it seems one other talked about it, but I cannot remember who.

Tá sé anaithnid . . . Tá brón orm.

Anyone realize that he was recruited by the staff as a CAT. Or at least that is what he and all the services say.

Zactly! You can sign 30 if five can count for '13, (that class total minus its early enrollees), and you don't exceed 85 total scholarships.

It sort of does, with all due respect. Because you can count the EE's toward the earlier or later year, wherever you have room. Over three years you are going to max out, but don't you believe we have some impending Medical wavers and some transfers? Remember what happened last year?

Uh no, with all due respect, 85 is the number. Early Enrolling does not matter in regards to the 85. It matters in regard to an SEC 28 yearly scholarship limit, but not in regards to the total.

We will sign until we get to 85 through prospects and 5th years. Hopefully attrition doesn't hit us after the fact.

When's the last time we made it to fall with a full roster? Seems like every year we're dealing with self-imposed sanctions.

OK, we seem to recruit more cats than the crazy old lady at the end of the street. Is the plan for some of these to guys to grow into DE's? And I am curious how the staff handles these recruitments? Do they let them know that they may "grow" into DE's?

It is my belief that Coach is operating on a few first principles:

1). We are experiencing a ridiculous attrition of large defensive players this year [I'm speaking of the "unfair" amount of injuries]. This is the sort of shocker that forces one to conclude that you can't count on normal statistics in roster management when it comes to bigs.

2). We will experience a significant loss of many of the bigs that we have at the end of the season. Take a team "limping" in a critical area and reduce that area further and you have the makings of a catastrophe.

3). As I stated to Whiskey's distress a month or two ago, the evolution of our defense seems trending towards a fluid movement from a BIG end of a spectrum [NT] through a "small" end of that spectrum [CAT], within which players are going to slide according not only to need, but also defensive game plan for a given Saturday. Translation: The borders between CATs and DEs are blurring as to one's week-to-week role.

4). The best way to deal with this is to pile up as many BIGs who are also athletes as you can, especially if they can run. Because this is also a lean recruiting year for big DTs [unless you're Alabama, FSU, FL, LSU, etc], that means stockpiling CAT/DE hybrids in 2014.

.... an opinion.

Thanks for being respectful. We do agree exactly. I looked at the numbers.

And when you do the math, it is hard to see a time when you would be able to take more than twenty-five back to back. To do that you would have to start with a large number of upperclassmen, with no fifth years, and sustain tremendous repeated attrition. You are right in that if you could successively recruit more than fifty, back-to-back while following the rules, you would have other bigger problems to worry about.

My only question is when BK awards scholarships, like to Joe Schmidt, is that one year, like Weis did with Montana, or is that for the remainder of the players time and UND?

Oh, and Mike, a good opinion at that! Hope you had a good turkey day!
