Oregon%20Trail,%20The%20(1992)_3.png

When I was in grade school (late 90's), we used to have library time every friday for two hours instead of our afternoon class time. There were four computers, and two of them had Oregon Trail. It was always a battle to be the first in the library to claim an Oregon Trail computer.

While everyone else bought nothing but ammo to play the hunting game, I worked on mastering the ways of the Oregon Trail.

Favorite shooter was Modern Warfare 2. I dropped quite a few nukes when that game was the big one. I would max out the unlimited sprint perk and the hardline perk to reduce killstreaks by one/two, and would sprint through the map with a shotty. People hated me haha.

Also, I thought I was the bees knees at NCAA football until I joined IE's PS3 dynasty online. Nothing but close games with those guys. My friends have never been able to hang, but IE is full of fantastic gamers.

LOL, that must be the newer version of Oregon Trail. The one I played (on my Tandy 1000) looked like this:

I remember my younger brother was GREAT at castlevania on NES. I would just sit and watch him play it.

What a horrible night to have a curse...I think that was Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest though. I struggled with the Castlevania games, but I still loved them. 2 was my favorite, even if it was a pain in the *** sometimes. Angry Video Game Nerd reviewed it years ago, it's a classic. He redid it again, along with the other Castlevania games recently. Here was the old review:

It was the rebooted version I believe, basically the second edition. And I think there are actually several even "newer" versions that came out in the early 2000's.

I went back and played Simon's Quest about 5 years ago. I remembered it being one of my favorite games from my childhood. But upon replaying it 20 years later I wonder how and the hell I ever beat that game without Google. You've got to randomly throw potions at dead ends among other parts way too tricky for a 30 year old man. But anyways, this is a great thread. I love going back and replaying my nes, snes, and genesis from time to time. Here's a few of my thoughts....

-Friday the 13th was terrible.
-Taboo was ....? I cant believe that some people paid 40 bucks for that game.
-Toe Jam and Earl (the first one), I am the master of. Outstanding game.
-Aerobiz and most Koei games are awesome.
-Chrono Trigger does have fantastic music.
-I loved sniffing for alchemy ingredients in Secret of Evermore.
-Civilization II, III, IV. (Haven't played 5)
-Zelda, Final Fantasy, Metroid, Kid Icarus, etc....

Ok, I'm going to get my NES.

Castlevania games on NES were all CLASSIC... loved all of them... 3 was prob my fav as it combined the best of the first two... the best 'soundtrack games' were definately CV games... Lament of Innocence had a crazy soundtrack.

thing was all three were so freaking hard!!!... I never did beat three.

on that note, I was so looking forward to the new CV games (Lords of Shadow)... they. suck.

It would be nearly impossible to beat Simon's Quest without the aid of Nintendo Power back in the day...or one of those Nintendo phone reps they used to have  Sometimes I wonder if they made some games so difficult on purpose to entice young kids to dial those 1-800 numbers for tips so Nintendo would get a little extra cash. I remember theres one part in Simon's Quest where you reach a dead end. Theres no indication that you have to do anything at the dead end, but if you hold some crystal (Which is usually useless), and kneel for 10 seconds, a tornado appears and takes you to the next area. Seriously, who the **** would know that without a guide?

As far as Secret of Evermore...man, I remember waiting YEARS for a sequel to Secret of Mana. At least, people thought it was supposed to be some kind of sequel. It ended up being it's own kind of unique game, although the combat was similar as were the menus. While I did enjoy Secret of Evermore, I kept wanting to compare it to Mana. The story was ok, but I didn't care for some of the locations they sent you to. The combat was still great, but the music was lacking big time. I did enjoy the humor though, and they actually worked in a hidden Easter Egg by placing Cecil from FFIV in the game, which is my favorite game all time.

CV2 was indeed crazy hard without Nintendo Power... I had that issue of NP back in the day too, held on to all of them for years... man I wish I still had them, some go for big bucks now... the cliff thing, just as you decribed, though if you talked to the town folk at the nearest town (to the cliff) they mention the crystal or whatever being the key to cliff and that you must pray with the crystal, stuff like that... so if you talked to everyone and took notes, you could do it.

I compare it to Dragon Warrior... to beat that game you had to get some special armor... the armor was in a completely random place on this huge map and you had to 'search' for it to obtain it... unless you searched every bit of ground in the game you'd never find it... though one dude in one town told you to search at a given point... and BOOM... I never beat CV2 without guides, but I did beat DW... and both had the same kind of thing going.

I honestly wish games were still like this... take GTA... not only does it tell you exactly where to go and what to do, if you die, you just restart right there like nothing happened and do it again... we are bascially challengeless when compared to first gen games.

I have heard that Dark Souls or whatever game is intensely hard though.

Haha, I remember that exact part. I was stuck there and after I looked it up I couldn't believe how ridiculous that was. I'll have to ask my parents how many Nintendo Power charges they used to have on their phone bill but I'm pretty sure word of mouth was king back in those days. One kid probably racked up all the charges and everybody else got it for free. Secret of Mana was the s**t too. So many great games back then. Now too I suppose.

I never played a Link game past teh OG one... just not my thing... but wasn't that the game that was supposedly haunted??? Or had some myth about it being haunted... like for real.

See, I always talk to townspeople in RPGs. For the most part townspeople often give great advise, sometimes they seem to know TOO much. Castlevania 2 is very different though. More than half the time the townspeople are completely random or don't make any sense, part of Dracula's curse if you will. Just look at some of the dialog from Simon's Quest:

"Don't make me stay here, I will die"
"I told you after Castlevania not to return"
"Stay back!!"
"You've upset the people, now leave!"
"Do not look into the death star or you will die"
"Let's live here together" (in the empty town.............creepy)
"Take my daughter please!"
"A crooked trader is offering bum deals in this town."
"Laurels in your soup enhances its aroma"
"Get a silk bag from the graveyard duck to live longer."

Dragon Warrior, on the other hand...I felt like that was a more intuitive game. Yeah, there were a couple hidden things in that game, like Erdrick's Armor and Erdrick's Token, but the Token could be found easily enough if you had Gwaelin's Love, and there was a clue to the Armor's location in Cantelin (SP?) I think. I don't think there was a distinct townsperson in Simon's Quest that said "Head 8 screens to the left, then use such and such crystal by kneeling for 10 seconds when you come to the dead end." There were other things in Simon's Quest that were either never mentioned, or they were super vague. Like...I think you're supposed to drop garlic in a random cemetary, and some guy comes out and gives you the Silver Knife. I don't remember any townspeople saying that.

Sorry, I didn't understand this at all. Secret of Mana and Secret of Evermore were RPGs by Squaresoft in the early/mid 90s. What Link game are you talking about, and what does OG designate? What's this haunting you speak of? I'm genuinely confused.

CV didn't have gusy that gave complete comands, and about half of them were just giberish... but I remember in the town closest to the cliff there were townspeople who when you put there messages together bascially told you to go to the cliff with the crytsal and pray...

it was there, though it may have indeed been much more vague

OG Link=The very first Legend of Zelda game on NES...

Mana had some urban myth about it that it was haunted, or had an evil attached to it like the VHS tape The Ring... seriously... I remember my high school friends talking about it... and one of my best buddies from college (didn't go to HS with) who is a Zelda nut knew all about it... people actually believed that game was haunted or something.

Oh man, the Dragon Warrior's were so hard. Sorry to triple post.

They don't make RPGs like they used to. I remember when I first got DW for the NES. Got it free I think for Christmas with the Nintendo Power sub. I obviously had never played an RPG till then, and I struggled to understand how you progress combat wise. I was 8 at time probably, and all I knew as far as video games were arcades and side scrollers like Mario Bros. I remember getting so fed up with Dragon Warrior that I hid the game behind the TV so I wouldn't have to look at it again, hoping I'd forget about it  I eventually gave it another try and figured out what I was doing wrong (Blowing my starting cash and running around naked was a bad move, for starters) and came to love the game. That led to playing all of Square's titles in the 90s, and Interplay's Fallout games. For me, Bethesda's Fallout and Elder Scrolls titles are the last great RPGs that have come out...but I'm a bit sad that the turn based RPG has all but died out.

Same here!!! ...

I would have never played that game otherwise... in fact it just collected dust for a year or so before I really tried it out... I did like it and play it all the way through eventually.

Hmmm, I haven't been able to find anything about the original Zelda game for NES being haunted. i did find something about Majora's Mask though:

Community:Haunted Majora's Mask Cartridge Hoax - Zelda Wiki
This is actually pretty interesting  Never heard about this. I guess they're really making it into a game.
You_shouldn%27t_have_done_that.jpg

Secret of Mana isn't related to Zelda at all, I think you're thinking of a different game...unless Secret of Mana was also haunted, in which case I haven't found anything on that. I'd be interested though, love that game! (As well as the Zeldas)

That's what I was referring to... I don't know the names of any Zelda games, I'll leave it at that... lol

My college buddy showed me clips in college... it came from the actual game acting weird and the ghost was given a name too... anyway, interesting stuff.

When were you in college? I didn't know anything about this haunted Majora's Mask cartridge till you mentioned a haunted Zelda, but the Wiki says that the Majora's Mask story came out around 2010. If there was a haunted Zelda title before that, I'd still like to know more!

You're lucky, none of my friends played games in grade school/HS. It wasn't until I introduced them to Mario Kart and Goldeneye before college did they take an interest  I'll see if I can dig up anything more on a haunted Zelda game prior to Majora's Mask. That video is pretty cool, I can't listen to the audio till I get home though. I had no idea this myth even existed before today, and it's awesome that they're actually making a game with the haunted features after the fact is cool.

Anybody have experience with any of the Fire Emblem games?

I got the first "America" release, simply titles "Fire Emblem" for GameBoy Advance when it first came out.

The turn-based combat is awesome and actually requires strategy if you play hard modes, and the level-up system is pretty cool. A plethora of characters to choose from and level-up as well, so a lot of replay value.

I can do a pretty decent speed run of Fire Emblem, though "speed run" is a couple days of playing.

I just remembered another one...I once beat Super Metroid under the target time and got to see Samus in her bikini for 3 seconds....totally....worth it. Well, not really, this was in college. If I was still 13, 3 seconds is probably all I would have needed though.

Anybody remember "Narc?" You blew away drug dealers, that's it. The best part was that the stand up game had an endorsement from the Attorney General, IIRC, for being an anti-drug game. Yeah, because you killed all the drug pushers with rocket launchers! Ah, yes, the 80s. I've got Narc on Game Cube; I still fire it up for nostalgia's sake now and again.
