GAIII is averaging 5.7 yards per carry. I wouldn't give him the ball on 3rd and short, but he's still a good player.

That 80 yard run against Oklahoma didn't hurt the average. He's still a home run threat, not a consistent back. You take away that big run, his average is right there with Cam's, and most of Cam's runs come when the defense is loading the box and knows the run is coming.

and ND loses to ASU? You take away Cam's big run and well...we're right back to where we started.

Seriously, why is this an either or proposition for so many people? Without some really bad turnovers and bad defensive breakdowns this team would be sitting at 7-0. So all the hand wrininging about the running backs seems a bit over the top. On the limited carries he got Atkinson looked good against USC. Both these kids are part of the overall toolbox and at this point both have their pros and cons.

I think the problem is GAIII's consistency. It's nice that he's a big home run threat, but for an every down back you want a guy that's consistent and can get those extra yards. GAIII hasn't shown he can do that with consistency, he tends to get hit and go down. He doesn't run between the tackles well, and what kind of starting running back can't run between the tackles well?

I agree with your general point, but I would like to see the backs progress during the next stretch of games.

I think Mayock hit in on the head during the USC broadcast - GAIII leaves yards on the field (he may have been paraphrasing BK, though). You can see he has improved in two areas - he's keeping his legs moving after contact and he's falling forward instead of backwards or sideways.

He still needs to improve in short yardage situations and running/vision after he breaks the first level. He's a load at 225lbs. He needs to embrace it, put his head down and pick up a couple yards when the team needs it. Perfect example was that 3rd and 1 against ASU in the fourth quarter. He should have put his head down and barreled forward for a couple. Instead, he danced around, leaving an important yard on the field.

After he breaks the first level and has a blocker giving him a two way go, he has a tendency to run to the sideline. All that speed is wasted going sideways and he's giving the defense an extra defender (the sideline). Instead, he should be looking to cut off the block, turn it up field and force a safety to make a open field tackle. Worst case scenario he picks up another 4-6 yards, best case scenario, he makes a safety look foolish and he's housing the ball.

Watched the tape of the SC game last night ... dreamed about Cam's move on Cravens on the second touchdown drive. Oh he made him look bad. It was glorious.

Cam has now appeared in 3 MS Paints in the last two years, 2 of them this year already. I think Golson has 2 under his belt, although one wasn't very flattering, and Theo was in 2. Kelly, Jesus, and Kiffin have also all appeared in 2

Carlisle runs extremely hard but has no vision.

Exactly! Like someone said, it is like Amir is trying to prove he can run inside and just hits it. If that kid learned to see his crease, in the SC game alone he would have had 75+ yards each carry he had, had a crease to hit. GAIII missed two really big ones, because he is trying to stop the urge from stepping sideways, and as I remember, Cam even missed one on that second down in the opening drive. He went right up the middle, but I could see the crease slightly east of where he hit, from my seats. He could have walked in. No I will fix it myself; "I could have walked in!"

Which, I am beginning to think is the biggest problem with our running game. Not the linemen up front, the backs hitting the crease.

unfortunately he crushed Cam on what should have been a TD to open the game(not his fault though)

Are you talking about the one he came in unblocked, 3rd or 4th down (Koyack); or the one where Cam missed the crease, 2nd down.
