Depends on where you are flying to.

Check Jetblue.com. I love that airline. Cheap with all of the amenities. They just don't fly everywhere.

JetBlue and Southwest tend to be the lowest prices...

but that can vary on date and where you are flying etc... you have to do a bit of homework, for all you know Delta has the best rates for your trip... also, buy early,... typically speaking, if you wait, prices tend to go up.

yeah southwest has been the best thus far...but the house we wanted was only available on those dates so we are locked into that week

I travel quite a bit and have used expedia, Travelocity, etc, as well as travel agents. My experience is that travel agents can't get cheaper flights like they used to and expedia/Travelocity almost always show the same prices (and sometimes cheaper) than the airlines themselves.

I've heard of people getting cheaper flights on cheaptickets.com or kayak.com, but I never have. Also, a lot of times when people get really cheap tickets it's because they book their flight last minute, which obviously isn't what you want to do.

If money is really tight, you should consider driving. I drove to Disney two years ago (from Mass) with three kids (2, 4 and 5) and it wasn't bad. The drive home sucked, but it was worth the money we saved in flights.

i have been toying w/ the idea of renting a van driving 1 way down and then fly home...from PA my father in law said he made the drive in 14.5hrs starting like 8pm at night

Gotcha... Southwest is usually the cheapest, JetBlue is usually around there, but it isn't universal...

My wife and I fly out to Oklahoma and Texas when we can, and just go cheapest rates,... it's usually one of those two, but there have been a time or two when one of the prem. airlines had cheaper rates... just have to look around.

Also, driving does save a ton of money, but you lose days and patience... is the extra money worth saving that is the question.

Not sure how flexible you are on what airport you fly out of. Sometimes just a change in venue can really save some buck$.

I have flown to El Paso, and I have made the drive as well... the 15 hour rides freaking suck... but if it saves a thousand dollars it's an easy choice in my family.

This.

For us, flying out of Ontario or LAX is exponentially more expensive than flying out of Las Vegas of John Wayne...

I fly to Florida a good bit, and get good rates on Air Tran, but that is flying to Ft. Lauderdale. Depending on the savings, it may be worth it. Also, and maybe someone already said this, I'd try both the comparison sites (travelocity, et al.) and the individual airlines, and someone told me once that Tuesdays and Wednesdays are cheaper days (for finding cheaper fares) (i.e., searching for fares on those days, not flying on those days)).

This is true. Tuesday was always my magical day to book when I was on the road. Always seemed crazy to me, but it was pretty consistent.

wow!!! that was great!! will discuss w/ the wife tonight but that was the cheapest thus far by a few hundred dollars

Make sure you go through that whole process. That first page only gives you the cost 1 way, not roundtrip.

Some of my best memories as a kid were road trips. Especially going south from up north. It was cool to slowly watch/feel the weather change. I would drive, save hundreds of dollars (if not over a thousand in your case) and make some memories.

Life is a journey, not a destination.
