I feel like this has come up in every thread, but that doesn't jive with GB's lack of touches.

Have people ever thought that maybe BK has a damn good reason to not play Bryant? Perhaps BK doesn't want to intentionally insult a 5* recruit by not playing him? Maybe GB's knee injury is legit...maybe GB doesn't know the blocking schemes well enough...maybe we've played such close games that BK hasn't felt comfortable playing him. There could very well be legit reasons yet some amongst us (I'm not saying you specifically) just jump to the worst possible conclusions.

A few weeks ago, Kelly argued that we can't run a tempo offense because of our immobile quarterback. This puzzled me, as I believe tempo is one of the ways you could actually OVERCOME having a limited pocket passer. We have athletes on the perimeter and I think it would be a fantastic wrinkle to get them the ball on tempo dinks and dunks. In that way he HAS changed his offensive philosophy and I believe it's hurting the offense.

When in his four years at ND has Kelly run a fast tempo offense?

I think Kelly has been on the record that in his former stops he had to have high octane offenses to put people in the seats. At ND he doesn't have to do that, and he can recruit elite defenses. I think he may pick up the tempo at times, but I do not see a high tempo offense as a permanent fixture at ND.

As for Rees running a high tempo offense: I think any time Rees hurries he gets out of his comfort zone. It's just not a good fit imo.

That's just it. Every year he's said something along the lines of "I want to run a fast tempo offense except for [some reason]." Initially it was "we need to install our system first." Then it became "our QB is a freshman... not yet." Now it's "our QB is slow."

That's all I meant. Use it "at times" as a wrinkle, like a reverse or a flea flicker. It doesn't need to be the entire offense but I think it could be an effective way to open a half or something like that.

A lot of people have the opposite impression. Rees' checks at the line of scrimmage have been a constant source of criticism so much that it appears opposing defenses are setting up in "bluff" looks to force him into a check that they want him to make. Maybe he could use a little less thinking at the line of scrimmage and just play.

It's jibe and you can bet your *** BK had a good reason why he got exactly as many touches as he did.

12-0, National Championship Game.

Because ultimately every thread boils down to Greg Bryant's lack of touches, or the inevitable implications thereof.

*Sigh.* I'm NOT saying I want GB to play more. I'm just using his LACK of playing as evidence that BK isn't just throwing this season out the window in the name of developing for next year, as one poster suggested.

Yes, "jibe," is technically correct, but in my defense:

The journal American Speech records jive in a list of college slang from the 1940s: "Doesn't jive. Doesn't make sense." The Dictionary of American Regional English has many examples of the "error" from the 1950s through the 1960s.

And what's more petty? Someone talking about GB's playing time or criticising someone's gramatical error?

For me, BK is STILL building a program. He also has to satisfy a demanding national fanbase (who can't even be happy after wins). He has severe institutional hamstrings to deal with as well. Right now I see nothing but bitching and moaning about not playing freshmen when the reality is that he is playing freshmen, some by need, some due to ability. Other freshmen not playing are not because of obvious reasons.Nothing that has happened this year is a surprise to me except how long it has taken our defense to get up to speed. TR is the guy I thought he was but apparently is going to be the QB for the rest of the year.

I wonder how much bitching and moaning there would be if we were 2-4 or 1-5 from playing more freshmen than were already played.

Very true. Notre Dame is not a place that lends itself well to quick turnarounds due to our obvious "institutional hamstrings" (as you aptly put it) so BK is still rebuilding the program. It's a long way from where we were under TW/CW to where our fanbase wants us to be.

Wait...I thought those were advantages?

And how can you build if you keep losing top recruits? Maybe he is still building...but if that's the case, he better start getting these kids to keep their commitments (pay them if you have too!)

For the record, you know I'd still be pissed if we were undefeated...LOL

I'm pretty sure everyone knows you would be a rage monster regardless.

I don't care if we ever get another 5*. I want the coaches to get guys that want to be here to give their all and represent the school well.

One year removed from the national championship and we're still building?

I'd call it more of our starting QB was suspended and our backup can't run the offense to its full potential.

If we go 9-3 with this team this year I will be happy. 10-2 will make me ecstatic.

ND Oversold On Kelly?

Yesterday's win over Navy guaranteed a winning season for the 4th straight year, '10, '11, '12, '13 ... For the first time since '95, '96, '97, and '98. 15 years.

Talk about setting the bar low... Not to rip on Kelly but the bar is a tad higher then making the Beef O Brady bowl.

But it wasn't before he got here. We weren't irrelevant for 20 years like so much of the rest of the country tries to assert, but we were mostly bad to mediocre. The culture is changing.
