When Claussen get in camp, who will be setup to leave or switch position. Anybody who believe that he will sit behind a Q.B. who haven't started a game is fooling himself. Unless (God forbid) Quinn go down and one of the other Q.B's step in and look good taking over. Then we looking at a transfer from Claussen or that Q.B. who lost his spot to him. Then we will find out alot about Charlie . His X and O's are fantastic no disputing that. but transfer and why they do leave's say alot about a coach. I'll be watching. Let's go Dame.

I think this is a legitimate concern, however, it's on bridge I don't want to cross until we come to it. Ultimately, the best man wins the job. I think Charlie is the type of guy that will keep them happy (at least 3 of them) and push them to become the best QB they can be.

Look at Matt Leinart. He was behind Carson Palmer and he didn't bolt when he had the talent to do so. Sometimes the learning makes up for the lack of playing time. Charlie has already said he does not plan on taking a QB in 2008, so I'm sure he is already thinking about the logjam that could present itself.

Two years ago the only time I thought I'd see my beloved Irish stating no QB recruit is need two years in advance was while I was playing NCAA on my playstation... if nothing else Charlie has certainly changed the feeling of the program... glad to see it

I really think Sharpley has the inside track for the job next year. Weis has stated he likes older more experienced signal callers at the QB. He will have 2+ years with Charlie and the system.

That being said if Evan is not producing I really think Weis will then turn to the leader in the 1. Clausen 2. Jones 3. Frazer competition. I've ranked them in the order I believe how it will work out, with Frazer transferring and Jones backing up Clausen or playing a WR Slash role.

If you guys don't think JC is not going to start next year, you are crazy. There is no way Jimmy doesn't start next year. I will bet anything he starts.

Yes, we know. You've offered this bet before. Nobody is guaranteed until one earns it on the field. On the field in South Bend, that is. Nobody is being given any spot. You can't deny JC's talent. And he may very well end up starting. But that has not yet been decided at this early stage.

Weis wants to win. If Opening day 2007 comes along and one of Jones, Frazer or Sharpley offers a stronger chance to win that day, they will be the starter. If it's JC, it will be him. Until all of them are working with the same receivers in the same offense against the same defenders, it is too early to judge.

The numbers in Frazer's junior year rivaled anything JC ever put up, and against at least equal competition. (Remember, JC plays in one of the weakest divisions in CA, though their schedule is tougher this year) And he never had anywhere near the supporting cast JC has.

Jones offers athleticism that none of the others can match. I also like the attitude and leadership he portrays. Not to mention, his arm is as strong as any of them, though he is not as mechanically refined as JC at this point. Let's see how that looks in a year.

Sharpley will have the advantage of a couple years in the system and after this season he will probably have played some mop up time against live competition, not just a practice defense. He was more highly rated coming out of HS than Brady Quinn. He's not exactly chopped liver.

All three of the above are highly rated. Yes, JC has been dubbed the Lebron of football and scouts are drooling over him, etc. etc., but it still has to be earned at the college level. Scout had Brady as the 14th best QB in his class. Here is the top 10 with the schools they signed with that year.

1. John David Booty (USC)
2. Kyle Wright (Miami)
3. Chris Leak (FL)
4. JaMarcus Russel (LSU)
5. Tommy Grady (OKLA)
6. Robert Lane (Ole Miss)
7. Justin Midgett (FL)
8. Dennis Dixon (OR)
9. Omarr Conner (Miss. St.)
10. TC Ostrander (Stanford)

This list was a prediction of who would be the best QB's in that class and was compiled by the same guys who have crowned JC. Anybody on that list you'd rather have than Brady? I didn't think so. There are only a couple I'd consider over Brady circa 2004.

Sam Keller was 38th in that list and may be one of the top 5 QB's of this class when all is said and done. Drew Tate was 40th!.

In 2002, Troy Smith was 14th. Drew Stanton was 15th. I'd rank Stanton now as the second best of that class after #1 Vince Young.

2004- Are Rhett Bomar, Xavier Lee, Anthony Morelli, Chad Henne and Kirby Freeman better than #6 Brian Brohm? Not by a long shot.

JC may ultimately be the guy, and we all hope he earns his accolades, but to crown him right now based on what internet scouts say is crazier than any of us saying he may not start.

Here's hoping he wins two Heismans ;) and a coule titles to match, but let's let him line up against other highly thought of guys before making any definate statements about who will start.

Football season needs to get here fast. You guys are placing bets on who the starting quarterback will be in 2007 when 2006 practice hasn't even started. Going into 2004, did anyone guess that in 2005 ND would have a new coach, a record setting QB, an All American WR named Samardzija? If you did, please meet me at Arlington Racetrack in Chicago. I'll give you a program and my ATM card. I'd like to reitre by 35.

Marc Tyler could miss a blocking assignment against St. Bonaventure and Blaine Irby could pulverize Jimmy Clausen ala Lance Harbour-West Canaan Coyotes- Varsity Blues. He has an entire senior year of high school to play. He already broke his hand screwing around in the garage.

JD Booty stuck around, but Rocky Hinds did not. Odds are someone will transfer, but you never know. This discussion has been beaten like red headed stepchild horse. We've seen it happen before with Mirer-Kelchner, LoVecchio-Holiday-Clark-Godsey. If a transfer happens, it might not be for two or even three years.

I think it is unfair to Frazer, Jones and Sharpley to start predicting transfers, position changes, moves to baseball, etc. And please, let's not Beano Cook Jimmy Clausen either. Let's wait to see what happens before he cures lepers and raises Lazarus from the dead. No one knows what will happen.

I will end with the common phrase attached to this discussion: "This is a good problem to have."

:raises one hand while crossing the fingers on the other:

I did. Now hand over that ATM card.

Please, let's not stir up such images. By the way, I punched a hole in a garage door once, but I can't play QB worth a darn.

Oh come on. His initials can't be coincidence, can they?

Yes it is. We haven't had this kind of depth at QB since Moby Dick was a guppy.

Good post. Reps.

Scooper,

We'll start small. We'll go to OTB and I'll let you bet a couple of races. See how you do. We'll take it from there.

Clausen will not get hurt. Oaks Christian is superior to everyone on their schedule, with St. Bonaventure being a possible exception. I'm sure every pass play is max protection, too.

Charlie Weis is performing the miracles around here. Initials CW = Championship Winner.

Aw. c'mon. Where's your sense of adventure? Starting small?

I've bet on races once, by the way. It wasn't pretty. But I didn't expect it to be and didn't put up too much $$$ effort.

I don't know who will start at LINEBACKER in 2006, let alone QB in 2007.

I need to see your horse betting style before I just hand over my link card. I mean, come on. If you're Edward Norton in Rounders, I don't want you running around the pony track with access to my funds.

I'd bet horses like some ladies fill out NCAA basketball office pools.

"Ooh, that one has a witty name." or "Blue is my favorite color, so I'll take the one with the blue blanket."

lol I love seeing people who know NOTHING about NCAA Bball filling out those office pool brackets.

true it is way too early to start speculating on the 2007 QB situation, Its just really message board banter.

I also read a rumor that JC broke his hand punching the garage door at some party over a girl, not playing basketball with some friends????

JIgga and Scooper bet the house On Prickly Pete in the third race...he is a lock.

Despite the poster angst, it's a GREAT problem to have!

It's been at least 9 seasons since ND had a bona fide #1 and #2 in Powlus and Jackson. (And I expect Sharpley, Frazer, and Jones will all be better passers and much better prepared, if need be, than Jarious was as a freshman.)

To find any depth beyond #2 you have to go back to the early 90's - Mirer, Failla, and McDougal.

Powlus, McDougal and Failla get an asterisk for '93. Powlus was the announced starter but went down preseason with a broken bone and was out for the season.
