No, I didn't mean the simple comment like that. I am just not as familiar with some of the things you were talking about so I was trying to put it into my own terms to help me understand a bit better.

As for the other comment, if they are creating logo's, uniforms, etc that are meant to be as close as possible to the real thing AND the dissemination of that content is coming from a few choice locations/people, I would question whether or not that would qualify as copyright infringement. Not a lawyer (obviously) but remembering my business law days many many moons ago, I would think it would qualify as “substantially similar”.

I think the key here is that it comes from a few key people/locations. If there are a few central locations, I could see universities, conferences, etc sending a cease and desist given the reasons they are pulling out of EA to begin with. If it was every random Joe doing it on his/her own, they couldn't do anything. Who knows for sure, but I can see issues down the line if my thinking is correct (greater likelihood that it isn't).

You could make the case... but again... other games do the exact same thing right now... and schools are not going to go after some random guy for updating his video game...

also, what would be the difference betwen that and IE using ND images for the site???

I'm not a lawyer either, but I think you have to look at the fact that gamers would not be profiting off these images, logos, etc that they're creating. Even better, if theres some slight modifications to the uniform or logo, I don't think the schools would be able to do anything. The gamers are providing the content for free, so they're not profiting off the images, schools, or the players.

I would like to get one of the resident lawyers to discuss this.

My understand was that courts often describe infringing works as having the same “look and feel” as the originals. Sometimes work depicting similar content in the same artistic style are held infringing, even if specific details are different. Plus, I am fairly certain you are infringing even if you are not profiting.

I see, you obviously cannot stop an individual from doing that.

But let me ask you this. Do you really think that the casual players would go through that effort?

Personally, in years past, I would purchase the game and would play off and on, but the most I would play in any given week would be 2 hours. So, not too much at all. For people like me (I have no idea how my gaming stacks up compared to the average CFB gamer profile), do you think they will want to take the time to customize? When the news broke on this, my thoughts were "that sucks, but, I can go buy Madden".

Dude...I just said the same things you're saying!! LOL

I agree with you. for the casual gamer, it's not going to be the same

I hadn't considered uniforms and stadiums, nor the fight songs/custom sounds associated. This would all certainly add to the time, but I'm confidant that if EA provided the tools, the community would do the rest no matter how large the project.

The real question is...if EA provides said tools, and a completely generic game from top to bottom, why would anyone need next year's game after that? EA would have to bank on adding new features to try and keep the revenue flowing each year, and so far they've shown little interest in adding a lot of new features to each new game most years. This year's game is probably one of the exceptions to the rule since they overhauled the broken option system (Read option was all that really worked last year), changed the engine, and improved blocking.

As far as stadiums...we probably wouldn't get cool features like campus sights at our stadium (No TD Jesus). They would probably give you 12-15 generic stadiums to choose from with pregenerated scenery. Similar to the way you create a new team in Teambuilder. Uniforms can be done easy enough if you allow the import of pictures/logos, but the community could customize it from scratch if needs be.

Good point.. they would certainly have different sales pitches every year and that might include pulling back on SOME of the customization allowable...

Yeah, I can see it now...

College Football '15 - You can edit all the rosters, coaches, and logos!

College Football '16 - You can edit conferences and bowls too!

College Football '17 - You can edit custom sounds (Nevermind we had it before)

College Football '18 - Amazing, you can edit stadiums and uniforms!

College Football '19 - Hey, you can make your own plays/playbook again!

Exactly. My fear is that they are going to take it to that next level and limit Sony and microsolf as to what can be uploaded and downloaded to the game.

Like I said...if they're willing to spend millions to fight to protect it from legit sources with agreements in place, do we really think there won't be some measures in place to protect if from users?

Besides, how effing cheesy is it going to be on the commentary when Mussberger can't say any schoool names??!?!?! LOL

I would imagine at this point it goes back to resources and desire. Right now, there is no desire since they already license things out. It would probably cost more to go after them. However, thanks to O'Bannon, I think the desire will be there.

Source: EA's Next College Football Game Will Only Lose One Team

could very easily be Notre Dame guys, ND dosen't have any marketing deals with conferences etc to worry about. I say ND hits up 2K games to make their own game and includes legendary ND teams of the past versus teams of the TW, CW and BK era's against Rockne and Doctor Lou :D (Could Ishaq handle the 4 horsemen???) Also including intra hall league competition (Siegfried rated 55 OVR). Would never happen but it would be an incredibly ballsy marketing move and they got the right development studio in it would be fun :)

Basically a game that does for ND what Rudy did.

What makes you think that? If anything i think ND would be the last team EA would want to lose

Here's a thought...

What if EA simply includes an "edit" feature on conference names/championship games?

Then it would be up to each individual to take 2 minutes to rename the "Pacific Coast Conference" back to Pac12, and the "Southern Football Conference" back to SEC.

Though it appears that schools will not opt out, as the entire discussion yesterday was about, if they were to opt out, I don't think you would need full customization like we assume.

For example, team locations and nicknames could have an edit function.

You could turn the "South Bend Leprechauns" back to "Notre Dame Fightin' Irish." Their unis will probably still be the same colors, with little tweaks, but this is simpler than relying on EA to create a fully-customizable website.

And of course, some uniforms would still be "generic" due to the absence of proper logos, and stadiums would be generic, but at least being able to create proper conference/team names would be something.

At this point is it even gonna be worth buying the game? Id say no

Mostl likely not as the gameplay will stay same-same so basically next year its less of a game. EA will try and sugar coat it with loads of bells and whistles of course to cover up the flaws like usual.

Tim Tebow College Football 2014 anyone?

I don't think the players on the field will look much better, but I could see them polishing the little things like the crowd, field, and stadium.

How could it not? Have you seen some of the video mock ups for the new PS4? Some of the games look incredible

Watch Dogs is the best looking image 'thing' I have ever seen... picture, movie, TV... video game... anything... looks unreal graphically.
