.92Well he's most likely gonna be Irish. If his decision is based on playing time according the new update, UCLA has 3 WR recruits already while we just have Brent committed so he should lean our way I would think.
Before the trip, he basically said ND unless UCLA blows him away... If it does, he'll also consider other schools as well.
Since it's now down to ND and UCLA, that should mean ND. Smart kid, UCLA is fools gold.
I believe Izzy is a lock once admissions processes him. That realistically leaves just 2 spots. If Holmes jumps on board then it's only one spot remaining for Quick, Dupre and Lazard. I would not want to turn away any of those guys and certainly not two of them. Again I like Holmes a lot but not better than those other 3 guys.
I could be completely wrong, but is it possible the staff slow plays Izzy? Quick is the #1 Z and eventhough he could also play DB, I'm not sure the staff would use a spot on Izzy if they could get Quick.
My opinion:
WR1) Dupre
WR2) Brent
WR3) Holmes
WR4) Quick
Then you could make a case for the staff possibly taking a 5th if Izzy, Lazard, or someone else decides to come in later and after the staff has a better idea about Dupre, Quick, Holmes.
You could also make a case for Juju Smith and Quick being ATH and the staff taking them regardless and sorting the situation out later. Meaning, they may accept Izzy and Quick. Who knows...
Personally, I'm good with the slow play/saving spots technique for now. It's still early and it seems like the staff is hitting OLB/DE hard as well. I'd rather have a spot for Chad Thomas (if he so chooses) over Izzy (if he's cleared) but that's just me.
As far as Holmes, I have a good feeling he'll be Irish in the coming days.
I don't think we have better than a 25% chance of getting Depre
we play this game every year and we always end up w/ extra scholarships...sign up boys and natural attrition will take place
May not be enough spots available. Do you turn away Elam, Holley, Watkins, Smith, Carter, Williams, Yeargin, Luatua? At some point you can't say so and so has a spot reserved. At some point you simply run out of room.
I'd love to have that policy, but ND doesn't oversign so they have to be picky and play their cards just right. Signing anyone and everyone early, immediately removes the possibility of landing a prospect who's deciding later or on NSD. Conversely, saving too many spots for NSD guys can leave you empty handed in the end. ND has to play the middle ground. Take some now, save some for later. I hate it, but it's the reality.
I expect 24 right now:
1 QB
1 RB
4 WR
4 OL
3 DE
1 DT
2 OLB
2 ILB
2 DB
That's 20. Add in best available for the remaining spots IMO
You left out TE. Plus you almost need an ATH category w/ the way this staff recruits. Also, it's hard to predict how many LB and DE the staff will take considering some (Blakenship) will grow into that position but start at CAT.
I expect us to go after 25, 26 if we go after a 2nd QB:
QB: 2 (2)
RB: 1 (3)
WR: 4 (7)
TE: 2 (9)
OL: 4 (13)
DT: 1 (14)
DE: 4 (18)
OLB:3 (21)
ILB: 2 (23)
DB: 2 (25)
K: 1 (26)
Do you expect us to oversign or have more attrition? The widely expected number at the moment is 24, maybe 25. I've never seen anyone expect 26.
I don't expect us to oversign.
What I mean is that I think we are aiming at a 25-26 man class (depending on how we assess the QB situation), and we will see what happens by February. If the roster won't allow it by then, the 24 number sounds reasonable, and I think we could easily survive taking 3 WRs, 2 OLBs, or 3 DEs, or some combination thereof.
The DE/OLB and the OLB/ILB numbers are very fluid.
QB: 2 (2)
RB: 1 (3)
WR: 4 (7)
TE: 2 (9)
OL: 4 (13)
DT: 1 (14)
DE: 4 (18)
OLB:3 (21)
ILB: 2 (23)
DB: 2 (25)
K: 1 (26)
A ton of talk about taking elite players-a word of caution-ND needs to overcome some hurdles and win this year. Another solid season and then the elite players will sign up. As has been stated for years, stringing together solid top 10 teams will put the Irish on the short list of many of the prospects Kelly and Co. are looking at.

Id assume that with the quick turn around decision its ND. Especially earlier i seem to remember talk about really slowing things down for officials if it was going to be tough.
