I went on an Irish pub crawl in Philly yesterday. I had some of the usual suspects that have already been discussed (e.g. Red Breast, Powers, Harp). I had 2 whiskies of note. One was Concannon, which is an Irish whiskey produced by the Cooley distillery. As with most other Cooley products, I was disappointed. Cooley puts out harsh-tasting, unrefined whiskey that is a chore to drink straight. I was actually reading an article about Irish whiskey at the bar and a quote about Cooley puts a finger on the problem, "Cooley is basically a Scotch distiller located in Ireland." That's not entirely accurate (I do like some Scotch) but its close enough. I respect that Cooley is trying to do things differently, but they come up short more often than not.

The other Irish I had was Greenore Single Grain. It's good stuff, smooth and pleasant. It doesn't have the full-bodied complexity of a pot still like Red Breast, but that doesn't make it a dull dram. It's a solid whiskey with real taste to it.

What is your favorite Irish whiskey? I agree that Greenore is pretty good, though I admit that I do enjoy Connemara (Cooley) even though I don't think it is great.

O.A.R. was fantastic, rocked for at least two and a half hours....I stayed w/ mostly light domestic swill during the show. Snuck in a few Boulevards though, very spoiled living in K.C. w/ those guys.

I've had Jameson 18 & Middleton, and while they are very smooth and refined, I think I'll take Red Breast day in, day out. It's something about that fuller, pot still character. Green Spot is the holy grail that I still haven't tried, and I hope it lives up to its hype when I finally do. Barry Crockett Legacy is my new goal. I was in a place recently that carries it for $60 a drink. I'm going to AC for the air show today, so if I win big maybe I'll treat myself.

As far as Cooley goes, I respect that they are doing something different with Irish whiskey, but the product just doesn't work for me.

Which of Boulevard's beers do you recommend? I have had The Sixth Glass, Double Wide and I have Love Child #3 in waiting to be opened.

I was in a bar today that had Lagunitas on tap. I felt like pointing at it and saying to the bartender "Man, I hear that stuff SUCKS." I refrained because I didn't think he'd get it and I knew my wife would've been upset when we were asked to leave the premises.

Bud Light Lime-a-Rita' s and for some reason they aren't half bad? The first time I tried them, I didn't care for it. Hmmm.

Boulevard has a nice, basic IPA in the Single Wide. The pale is pretty malty and not as hoppy as I like, but is decent. Double Wide is a blast of goodness. Sounds like you're only getting the Smokestack Series, which is an elevated series. Good stuff.

Clown Shoes Galactica IPA

Description on the bottle:
Galactica, a hop staff wielding heroine, patrols in karate kick mode through the heavens. Her mission: cosmic combat to promote good beer. Dry hopped with Galaxy hops, a clean malt backbone enhances the dank and luscious IPA flavors.

Very nice piny nose that opens up to be a bit more citrisy to my palate. Medium malt and high hop. 8%.
