QB Recruiting 2014/15

Since the Top247 list for 2015 came out I've been considering the potential advantages and disadvantages of taking 2 QBs in 2014 as opposed to taking 2 QBs in 2015. With Allen committing to A&M in the past hour it makes the question a very tough one in my opinion. We seem to be in on some very good QBs in 2015 however that may be one year too late with the potential issues ND could have in 2014.

What do people think of NDs chances of getting 2 top 15 QBs in the same class?
We lead for Beneventi, could lead for Morgan and one or two other highly ranked QBs have seemingly shown interest in getting an ND offer.

Would we be better off going for a 4 star like Kizer and a 3 star like Dawkins this year (both are also good athletes and could potentially change position) or should we wait and hope that two prospects that are as highly rated as Beneventi and Morgan would commit to the same team in the same recruiting cycle?

It is of my opinion, QB is a position that you take at least 1 every year so I say take 1 this year. I'm also not really that enamored with what the 2014 cycle brings.

Staff wasn't going to take 1 this year before all hell broke loose.

Sign me up for Kizer, Beneventi and Morgan

I should have prefaced it by saying it is my opinion that you should.

Yeah, I am in favor of taking one 2014 QB ASAP. I wish we would just give Dawkins the green light to commit. He wants to pop and, while I don't think he's the most polished prospect, I'm confident he could turn into a solid BK QB.

I am not in favor of taking two 2014 QBs, at least not yet. Maybe take one QB ASAP and then, if another remains interested, wait till late fall to see whether a) Golson is still on track to return to ND in 2014 and b) it looks like Hendrix will return for his 5th year. If a) and b) are both yes'es, then I definitely only want one 2014 QB. If they are both no's, then I definitely want two. If one is yes and the other no, ... not sure, but I lean toward taking only one 2014 guy with talented 2015 kids already interested.

I'm in favor of taking just one in 2014 and two in 2015 mainly because IMO:

Beneventi, Morgan, Campbell, Gibson > Dawkins

and we haven't even reached out to some of the top names yet

Both of those are contingencies that won't be resolved until late in the cycle, and the staff doesn't have control over either of them. If Hendrix doesn't see serious playing time in 2013, I doubt he returns for his 5Y. And Golson's return is a total crapshoot. Given his record of maturity/ commitment issues, I wouldn't bet on it.

I'd definitely agree that taking two in 2015 is preferable to taking two in 2014, I just hope that our QB situation will allow that that to happen.

Personally I prefer Kizer over Dawkins so I hope the staff offer him in the very near future and I think that would put us right at the top of his list.

But while I'm sure that we would all love to get Morgan and Beneventi for 2015, how likely is it? Morgan is rated as the 9th best pro-style QB by 247 while Beneventi is rated as the 12th best. I've only been following recruiting for a few years so maybe someone else with a bit more knowledge on the subject can tell me whether two highly rated QBs commit to the same team very often?

It happens (Branden Stewart and Peyton Manning and I believe usc had 2 a few years ago in the same class), but it's pretty rare to have 2 Top 10ish QB's in the same year.

Has the staff stated in the past that their preference is to have 5 scholarship QBs on the roster? Or is the number 4 (in a perfect world, one every year)?

USC had Wittek and Kessler. Florida had Brantley and Cam Newton. Texas has done it once or twice as well. Georgia had Aaron Murray and Zach Mettenberg. Almost always one of them ends up transferring but it does happen ocassionly. Also ND had Frazier and Jones.

Isn't the bolded viewed as a stone lock at this point (or at least as close as you could be this early)??

Take Dawkins now so you have depth in case Hendrix and Golson do not return and then take Bene and Morgan then move on to more pressing and less clear positions...

just my first thoughts..

That might be our best course of action, but there's plenty of risk there too. Might leave us with only 2 scholarship QBs for 2014. Courting disaster if the injury bug hits.

That said, we are losing a ton of talent after this season anyway. Might as well plan on rebuilding in 2014.

What a crazy swing of events. Kiel bolts, Golson gone, #1 prospect on the board commits elsewhere before visiting. Presently the staff has 3 qb's for 2013 (two of whom got passed up by an underclassmen) and only one guaranteed for 2014.

But the good news is the depth at nose tackle is... ah crap.
