That author is an idiot. I didn't read past this: "Second, heaping an expectation on Muslims - to call out "their" criminals - is absurd when no similar expectation is placed on any other religious, ethnic, or ideological group. Is it appropriate for a white man to tell "the hispanics" to make proclamations against the drug trade? Why should a hispanic who has never even touched drugs speak out against drug lords? His abstention from engaging in the drug trade is condemnation enough."

Hispanics that engage in the drug trade don't say they are drug traffickers because it is part of their obligation as Hispanics.

What is probably a far more apt analogy is as follows. There have been a few abortion bombers. They say they conduct the bombings because of their belief that abortion is murder--it is required. The vast majority of pro-lifers however strongly object to such methods and consistently and repeatedly condemn it. Whenever a bombing occurs, the American public and media expect them to do so, and they, rightfully, do so.

The fact of the matter is and I'm sure some many find this hard to believe but Islam is as diverse as Christianity, including all of its insane and goof ball iterations. Shocker I know.

The thing about truth is that it is true. It really can't be argued.

Therefore, I would encourage anyone on this board (or in life) that spends their time defending Islam to actually read their book, the Quran. It is not a nice book. You will find their views to be very clear about woman and anyone that doesn't submit to their views.

The Quran contains at least 109 verses that call Muslims to war with nonbelievers for the sake of Islamic rule. Some are quite graphic, with commands to chop off heads and fingers and kill infidels wherever they may be hiding. Muslims who do not join the fight are called 'hypocrites' and warned that Allah will send them to Hell if they do not join the slaughter.

You can try and tell people that Islam is a peaceful religion. Unfortunately, when you go back to their book (manual) it is a violent religion that is all about conquering.

Lastly, for those that want lump Christianity into a violent religion, I would encourage you to read the book - the Bible. Specifically the New Testament. The Old Testament has been fulfilled because of the sinless life and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Bogs.... per the OP, we were talking over the past decade in America. Obviously, the Klan, IRA, etc. etc. etc. became defunct in their terrorist activities before that line that was drawn in the OP.

Thank you for responding with love and understanding. And I appologize if I am not sharp enough to see the point. But, that seems to exactly be my point! It is a bad time to look at such individuals who have probably not coalessed as a group, but probably more fittingly represent an illness, and it is entirely too short of a time for a clear frame of reference for anything, including a comparison with any accurate historical perspective.

Many people are doing things and mask themselves in religious camouflage; they have nothing to do with religion.

To see this more clearly in an equivalently mature Christianity, I believe, you have to look at someone like Martel's grandson. He did a lot to standardize Christianity, and develop the face of the church today, but the overwhelming truth is he wanted to be the Holy Roman Emperor, have the Pope work for him, and rule the world! As an aside, no one did more to lock in the feudal system, trample the rights of a broad group of Christian souls, and diminish personal freedom as Charlemagne. His assault on one of the biggest groups of European Christians did not begin to relinquish until the Magna Carta, in 1215, and didn't get a lot better until the birth of the United States.

Megalomania has the same footprint, no matter what date and time. It borrows one or two points from whatever it uses to cloak itself, and then it advances its own position, sometimes adopting the entirety of a dogma, or cause to advance itself.

I'm not 100% up on my Hadiths, but I think they are important to an understanding as well.

Well you should have continued reading the article because he posted several links that documented hundreds of cases of Muslim public figures condemning terrorism.

There is a thread of thought here that asserts that the cause of a pattern of action by a group of persons or religious adherents is caused by something that is innate to that culture or religion. But how comfortable would those forwarding this argument be with looking at incarceration rates in the U.S. and arguing that persons of a certain race or culture are criminals because of something that is innate to that race or culture. Finding a pattern and providing statistics is not a substitute for asking why a pattern exists and whether there is a cause, external to the target group, that contributes to the pattern.

Before turning to those external factors, I'd like to offer a few thoughts on factors internal to a religious creed to see whether and to what extent the tenets of a religion determine the actions of its adherents. It is facile to look at a pattern exhibited by a group of religious persons and then to look to the religion as the cause. But I have found that religious tenets, at least as they are applied to the society and to the politics of the day, are more malleable than is initially thought. Looking at the first wave of democracy in nineteenth century Europe, responses of Catholic and Christian leaders to democracy were varied from country to country, depending on the place of religion in the state. Despite this variation, the emerging notion was that Catholicism especially was fundamentally incompatible by its own tenets with democratic principles and regimes. In fact, this very argument was asserted in the United States as a reason for restricting immigration of Catholic immigrants and forcing Catholic immigrant children into public schools so to instill in them a love for democracy that was perceived to be lacking. Yet, during the third wave of democracy in the 1970s and 1980s, Catholic leaders, especially in Eastern Europe and South America, were calling for democratic rule as inextricable from the dignity of the human person. The point of this is to say that a religion with as rich of a text as any of the Abrahamic religions is not easily reduced to an innate or unmovable pattern of action or thought at least as it pertains to social and political issues.

I'll end with a few thoughts on the external factors. It would likely be more articulate to say structural--because I mean to offer the role of the interactions between groups as a source of explanation for the actions of one among those groups--but I say external because the discussion in this thread seems to take one group in isolation of any of its interactions with other groups. To just offer a few thoughts, British and French rule in the Middle East may have been brief but the instability it initiated reverberates into this century. Borders were drawn up according not to any religious or ethnic lines but according to the interests, especially in terms of oil, and the politics of the British and French. Installing those amenable to their interests in the highest offices, the British and French "protectors" left their protectorates with leaders with little legitimacy and with multiple religious and ethnic groups with which to contend. You know what an easy way to galvanize a group of persons under your leadership? Create enemies outside of the group, whether it be along religious, ethnic, or political and national lines. The current state of affairs is therefore in part a consequence of the instability and division created by Western influences.

Now all of this is not meant to deny that there are internal issues at play here. But the above discussion is filled with conversations about these issues while quite a bit less has been devoted to a discussion of the bigger picture. If the study of history is useful for anything, it is to show us that most things began earlier than we think they did and are more complicated than we think they are.

And if you back up 6-700 years christianity wasnt the (largely) well behaved child it is today, maybe just growing pains? or does it take that long to realize maybe we should chill a bit?

I don't see a puberty/maturity rite of passage analogy here.

The Quakers (Friends) didn't exist 600 years ago. They were champions for equality (religion, women, children) in their early days and persecuted for their beliefs. When they came to America many owned slaves but they saw the wrong in that and stood up against the practice. And unlike John Brown, they didn't hack their neighbors to death if they didn't share their opinion.

This is a common point. While mostly correct, I don't think it proves much.

If the borders had been drawn to more accurately reflect ethnic and/or religious groups, it would have mostly converted was has been intrastate conflict into interstate conflict. For example, if Iraq had been divided by into 3--Kurd, Sunni, and Shia. Sure, you may not have had decades of Iraqi Sunni oppression of the Shia and Kurds. Rather, you would likely have interstate conflict amongst the three over territory, resources, and particularly oil (which is mostly in the Kurdish and Shia areas).

The far bigger problem is what I stated before--i.e. lack of strong civil institutions or democratic norms, strength of religious institutions, practically inevitable rise of autocrats and their concomitant use of the natural tools to maintain their power, etc. Given that situation, I doubt there is much the West could have done to make it better. Frankly, I think it is Western conceit to think we could have made it much better. Historically, they were screwed before we got our hands on them. And the geopolitical climate of the Cold War combined with their geography and the "natural resource curse" did the rest.

I shouldn't pretend to know too much about Middle Eastern politics and you may be right re: interstate conflict replacing intrastate conflict, but I wonder if issues of political representation and ethnic/religious self-determination haven't contributed to the strife and violence in the region. There seems, at least initially, to be something different about interstate and intrastate conflict, i.e. ethnic/religious tension + self-determination/national sovereignty?

There is a lot to that.

Speaking to the rise in religious extremism, it was largely created and is perpetuated by the political oppression. Lacking civil or other rights, the citizenry turned to religion for empowerment. And the autocrats encouraged it as long as it could be co-opted or at least direct elsewhere (against another minority or an outside force).

However, whether the Brits and French drew the lines accurately or not, I don't see a way they could have created a system that would have caused the development of democratic institutions and norms, especially in the limited time they had (and, by that time, the Brits and French had little appetite for massive colonial projects).

Basically, the situation was ******. We were very unlikely to see beacons of democracy (not just 50% +1 voting but democratic norms) break out across the region. We knew the countries would be horrible. So, if they would be horrible, we needed to at least try to keep them out of the Soviet sphere of influence. So, that is what we did. I don't think we had any real choice.

And, of course, over time the power of the religious institutions grew and radicalized. Although, it is worth noting that democratic norms and institutions have infiltrated, with some limited success in some countries. That said, the religious institutions are often as powerful, if not more powerful, than before and more radical.

We are now seeing various attempts at democracy: Iraq, by the barrel of a gun; Egypt, by withdrawing our support for the autocrat; and Gaza and the West Bank. Iraq is working, sort of. Egypt, Gaza, and the West Bank are largely confirming our fears. "Democracy" is used to vote their religious ideologues into power who then use the trappings of the state to solidify their power, make their position largely impervious to future changes in public opinion, and strip away most democratic norms that might have existed under the autocrat.

At some point, the move to "democracy" has to happen. And the exigencies of this current period, as compared to the Cold War, make it a better possibility. But, ****, is it messy. And is largely a move to a different kind of totalitarian state, even if nominally democratic.

I just thought I would edit this so everybody could see it if they may have missed it. This is a thought so great, that I may be willing to give my life for the preservation of it. (I hope non of you sombiches show up at my doorstep to take me up on it.) I certainly wanted everyone else to have the true pleasure of contemplating it. Jason, don't get a swelled head, okay?

What came first though? Because those who choose to ignore history are doomed to repeat it and ill be damned if I'm gonna let Al Qeuda plant a stool on my Ottoman!

Throughout history there have been aggressive militant factions attempting to act under the guise of almost every religion out there. The unfortunate thing for Muslims is they currently have the largest group of jackass extremists going. Peaceful Muslims are scared to death of the extremists and many Muslims aren't 100% sure their Qur'an (Koran) doesn't actually validate terrorism, so they say little and do nothing against the ****tard jihadists.

We have tons of wannabe extremists here in America too. They get together on weekends wearing camouflage and crosses in compounds in places like Idaho, Montana and many southern states. Fortunately they're mostly happy going to rallies and taking group pictures holding guns.

You left out Indiana. Just watched a show that included a segment on the "Indiana Watchman" organization. They looked pretty scary.

Currently the European Union is deciding whether to keep sanctions in place against Burma. Evidence of ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity have been substantiated. It is mostly religious; Muslim and Buddhists. The Buddhists have been slaughtering the Muslims by the bushel.

What amazed me beyond the obvious is that there are terrorist acts/violence in the US that you never really hear about. For example of March 24, a Muslim convert walks into a church and shoots his father dead while saying "The Will of Allah."

Another way to interpret this list would be that US foreign policy has helped create some of the most tribalized and dangerous places on earth but you seem to be hell bent on equating a couple billion people with what statistically ammounts to way less than a handful. Since we're talking about cultures that seem to be hell bent on terrorizing others please revisit US Foreign policy in Indo China as well as the Middle East, Central and South America. Not exactly ancient history. What we as a country did in those regions should give anyone being critical of another cultures "obsession with violence" pause.

dictionary.com is helpful. You should try it.

And I've never posited in any way that because of the fact there are some 3-4 Muslim terror attacks a day it somehow means all several billion Muslims are terrorists.

Try again.

magogian did the site cite requirements for the crime being classified as an act of terror?

Good question. I'll check.

The requirements are fairly broad, but I think they are defensible: "These are not incidents of ordinary crime involving nominal Muslims killing for money or vendetta. We only include incidents of deadly violence that are reasonably determined to have been committed out of religious duty - as interpreted by the perpetrator. Islam needs to be a motive, but it need not be the only factor.

We usually list only attacks resulting in loss of life (with a handful of exceptions). In several cases, the deaths are undercounted because deaths from trauma caused by the Islamists may occur in later days, despite the best efforts of medical personnel to keep the victims alive.

We usually don't include incidents related to combat, such as in Iraq and Afghanistan, unless it involves particularly heinous terror tactics, such as suicide bombings or attacks on troops sleeping in their barracks or providing medical care to the local population.

We acknowledge that a handful of incidents on the list may not fit the traditional definition of 'terror attack.' A small portion, for example, are of honor killings - although we usually omit those in which the woman is killed by her husband, since this is often indistinguishable from a crime of passion (barring explicit circumstances). Our stance on honor killings is that the stabbing, shooting or strangling of a woman over "unIslamic" behavior constitutes Islamic terror."

Yeah right, your posts have been insinuating that very idea from the get go. As for the dictionary thing, whatever try using a android phone to post and get back to me. If we're gonna get into a pissing contest and your analysis of the Middle East and its problems sucked because you completely left out the entire Cold War and post Cold War era, the rise of Isalmic nationalism as embodied by Sadat and on and on. Also, you simply state "the US did as good as it could" which comes across as an apologist crock. Try again I suppose.
