Poor guy. Had loads of potential. Hope he figures out what his plans are now. He picked the right school, that's for certain.

He's in the Mendoza College, majoring in marketing. He definitely picked the best school for him now that football is over.

The writing has been on the wall for a while, but this still hurts.

Nichols is hulking OT, and ever since we heard reports that he frustrated Aaron Lynch into picking a fight with him in practice, I've been excited to see him on the field.

Sucks that won't happen now. Our OT depth is scary thin this year. We'll need another season of good fortune on the injury front to make it to a BCS game.

Time to flex that ROI, Tate.

It's not scary thin, it's just very inexperienced.

Semantics. We obviously have decent numbers.

But if Stanley isn't up to the task, an injury at OT would either: (1) necessitate a serious shake-up on the OL; or (2) force us to play a true freshman.

Neither of those options would bode well for our offensive prospects in 2013.

True.

I have a lot of faith in Stanley though. I think he could be the best OT to come out of ND in a long time.

Maybe I'm crazy but I think Elmer as an EE and college ready size might not be the end of the world if thrust in at RT. if we have an I jury to Zach Martin? All hell might break loose.

So how do this and the Gunner Kiel transfer shake up the 5th year situation? Just about everyone who wants one we now have room for?

Always thought he was a brilliant offer...big kid who played TE in HS and could move. Too bad.

On to the next chapter. Best of luck to him!

Sucks to hear, but so glad Mr. Nichols is here pursuing a degree that will be incredibly valuable in life. Very best to you, Tate, and I hope you excel in the business world.

Would've loved to see this kid get some PT. Hate to hear his career is over. Glad he made the right 40-year decision though. Best of luck, Tate!

Dear Lord, please help our OL get through this year w/o any more injuries. - Amen

On a different note: Stuff like this happens a lot (transfers, medicals, etc). It's the exact reason why I think ND should oversign by one or two kids every year. Not more than that, because I'd hate to start seeing shady things happening and following the footsteps of the SEC. But transfers and injuries are imminent in college football and staying as close to 85 as possible is crucial. NOTE: I'm a strong advocate of not oversigning (as noted in the oversigning thread) but to clarify, I'm only against it when shady tactics are used to try and justify it. Signing +10, for example, and dealing with it later by cutting kids, etc is completely wrong. Signing +1/+2 just as insurance when the inevitable transfer/injury happens is just smart roster mgmt, imo.
