At least they're being proactive about it.

Call it "playing politics" or whatever...but with our current economic situation, it's always good to have a plan B...rather than just accept Washington's BS

They would, after much talk, become Mexico's northern slum.

Anyone who has seen how "reliable" the Feds are after events such as hurricanes should realize that the best course is for every man to be prepared to take care of themselves. Looks like this politician at least has a bit of forethought to start the discussion of "what if....", before rather than after.

No chance in hell.

Not to start a fight. I like you, and many people I have met from Texas. I remember in the late 90's, all the survivalists "shows" out in the fields and desert scrub lands. You could get everything from guns and ammo to huge generators. I used to listen to these people for hours. It was an unbelievable source of entertainment.

But none of those people would stand a chance with armed, hungry, determined people.

I am telling you. The Texas Roosters of today, would have a long way to go to keep up with those of the past. And those guys couldn't run a country. They folded like a cheap blanket; begged to get in to the US!

Pretty rediculous. This would certainly qualify as a government study that flushes money down the toilet. More sore loser bs from the nuttier portion of the GOP.

You serious, Clark? What's so stupid about having a contingency plan for a worst case scenario kind of situation? The stupid thing would be to believe that the US could never crumble.

Because these are the same guys that don't have time to vote on disaster relief or bills that effect education in the state. But planning out doomsday scenarios? That is what should be a priority for them right now?

Exactly. It's particularly disconcerting considering these same policy makers continue to persue economic policies that have been proved to be disastrous (see Great Depression and 2008 financial collapse) and energy policies that according to every scentist studying the matter will be disasterous. Way to keep your eye on the prize. Maybe they'll watch World War Z and reference it for their "study".

This^

Also why do folks think the USA is going to collapse.

Is it the debt? We issue our own dollars that is why can borrow for like 1. something percent. You got Spain and Greece borrowing at these crazy interest rates. Why? Because they gave up their own currency and the right to issue their own currency. That is why the EU is going up in flames. The United States is not the EU we are not going to collapse.

Texas---as well as most other of the fanatical anti-gov states---louisiana/alabama/mississippi etc---are all TAKERS----they get more from the government then they pay in taxes into it by a wide margin , the irony is rich.

Texas owes so much to massive federal spending into areospace & military installations---- as well as its own luck to sit on so much energy wealth--yet it is wallowing around the bottom of the barrel in

* Poverty
* number of physcicans
* infant mortality
* overall health care
* education
* more water & air pollution then any other state--its aging plants chemical & refinieries immune from regulation
* the most punitive prison system in the industrial world with more people in prison then Italy France and germany combined----with only one-tenth of the population
* Texas has one of the most corrupt and unresponsive state governments in the country, run by the wheeling & dealing of a handful of powerful texans.

Essentially texas is a basket case that thrives mainly because of the backup of the rest of american tax payers & remains livable due to the partial federal regulations that still hold in texas on banking , civil liberties, and alike.

On their own Texas would collapse into a third world oligarchy within MINUTES!

Color me a little tired of listening to the whining of those that prosper from my handouts and those of other states. We all have problems -- but texans seem to think its all about them. Personally i'd be happy to let them go their own way.

The state of Texas has been sued multiple times and had the entire prison authority taken away, I know the special master appointed on one of these occasions. It was a massive effort on the part of the authority that came in to replace the pails used both for eliminating human waste and bathing, with modern inventions like indoor plumbing.

You make a valid point about rich usually blue states supporting poor usually red states. Actually Texas does make a bit more than it gives at times. Although it goes back and fourth sometimes they take sometimes they do give depends on what yearly range you look at. Due to it popular and urban areas Texas sometimes does enough to get by.

By the way this^ is why Chris Christie was PO'd when he didn't get his relief money right away because NJ is usually a giver not a taker.

It is interesting though that states like Florida drag about having 0 state income taxes but yet they would not make it without federal assistance.

This though illustrates exactly why the USA will not collapse and the EU will. The EU countries can not issue their own currency yet they are not treated like states either were the rich states give the poor states money like in the US. For the EU to work they need to treat these countries like Greece and Spain like we trait Mississippi and West Virginia in the US. Hence as I mentioned early unlike Greece we will not run out of dollars. Sure we have to worry about inflation but that is only if we go insane.

This is rich coming from a Hawaiian. Have you looked at the statistics for this? I'd like to know how Hawaii and Texas (along with the other states) compare.

Funny thing about this... so does Hawaii.

Please...give up the whole "financial collapse was Bush's fault" and the obama talking points. We've been through that dozens of times. It was government getting involved with home ownership and loans and banks that led to that $hitshow.

At least Texas is planning for the worst and hoping for the best. China might pass us soon economically, holds the majority of our debt, has the largest standing army in the world, and their Navy is fast our-pacing ours in building new warships (saw a special on that last week about the US as a military superpower), and they keep trying to send hacker teams to penetrate the Pentagon and DOD.

You don't see Hawaii in the news every week talking about seceding from the US.

More importantly than Texas' defense, to those of you who don't like Texas, its citizens, or their ideas: go pound sand. It won't affect you unless you live there. If you do live there and don't like it, move to a far more liberal paradise like CA, NY, IL, etc...

Unlike 99% of progressive policies, this idea from Texas doesn't require any coercion (public education funding, social security, medicare, medicaid, obamacare, etc).
