Front & Center: Jon Gruden on return of fourth Gruden’s QB Camp « ESPN Front Row

For top college quarterbacks moving onto the National Football League, visiting Jon Gruden’s QB Camp has become an annual rite of spring.

The Monday Night Football analyst and Super Bowl-winning coach personally prepares detailed lesson plans for every player.

Last year, Gruden mentored Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, Russell Wilson, Ryan Tannehill and others, arguably the most successful class of rookie quarterbacks in NFL history.

He helped prep each of them for the jump to the NFL.
(To the delight of fans, Gruden also introduced “Spider 2 Y Banana” into the lexicon.)
Gruden’s QB Camp series presented by Corona Extra is back for a fourth year this spring, beginning Thursday, April 4 at 8:30 p.m. ET (ESPN2) and continuing throughout the month with segments on SportsCenter and NFL studio shows across multiple ESPN networks.

The SportsCenter specials will offer a first-hand look at some of this year’s top prospects leading up to the 2013 NFL Draft, which ESPN will again televise April 25-27.

Nine of the top quarterbacks in the draft are scheduled to participate in Gruden’s QB Camp:

• Matt Barkley (USC)
• Tyler Bray (Tennessee)
• Zac Dysert (Miami, OH)
• Mike Glennon (N.C. State)
• Landry Jones (Oklahoma)
• EJ Manuel (Florida State)
• Ryan Nassib (Syracuse)
• Geno Smith (West Virginia)
• Tyler Wilson (Arkansas)

The series will also include a trio of non-quarterbacks:
• Luke Joeckel (Texas A&M), the 2012 Outland Trophy winner and top-five prospect at offensive tackle.
• Marcus Lattimore (South Carolina), the heralded Gamecocks running back who suffered a severe knee injury in October but hopes to play in the NFL in 2013.
• Manti Te’o (Notre Dame), the highly-touted linebacker and Heisman Trophy runner-up who led the Fighting Irish to the BCS Championship game.

Each prospect will visit Gruden’s office in Tampa, Fla. — affectionately dubbed the Fired Football Coaches Association (FFCA) — for a film session. Most of the players will also participate in an on-field workout.

In the Front & Center podcast above, Gruden discusses QB Camp and his expectations for this year’s class. Air dates and times for the entire series will be finalized in the coming weeks.

I like the stuff w/QBs...but two things I see coming...Teo's play in the NCG being dubbed as some on-field benchmark, and of course Teo being the target of a scam as some off-field benchmark. Maybe I'll be surprised, but not sure I like the idea...

I think it will be good. Gruden is direct, honest and fair. I would expect any girlfriend/hoax discussion to be short but direct.

Agreed. Big fan of Gruden and I suspect it will be good for Manti to get to talk about football in the media for a change.

I don't doubt that...its just that if Gruden spends three sentences on the hoax subject, and one is "That was horrible judgment"...Because of Gruden's credibility, Manti takes another shot in the eyes of GMs.

On the performance topic, If gruden pulls up film throughout the year and points to a consistant weakness in Manti's game, and shows how Alabama exploited it...thats very bad...and Manti takes another shot in the eyes of GMs. If he says Manti made uncharaceristic mistakes...no biggie.

I worry about the inverted Alex Smith buzz...Smith was an ok QB, but someone got it in his head he was stellar, and then suddenly everyone thought that. Same holds true here...a credible guy says a couple things that aren't flattering...bad buzz.

I kinda expect Gruden to be who he is...and I'm good with him...

Can Manti's stock handle someone with that credibility piling on ...even a little.

Manti is a reasonable interview (from what I've seen) and a gifted athlete, and I would have thought his interviews and physical performance at the combine would have been all the "talkin" he should be doing.

I'll be surprised [and disappointed] if Gruden talks about anything but playing football. He COULD point out some embarrassing plays vs Alabama, I suppose; but it should be all football.

Didn't realize you were Manti's agent...

I wouldn't be surprised if this was Gruden's idea. The guy will probably never end up fulfilling the dream of many ND fans by coaching here, but he loves our program. I think this will be a very positive thing for Manti.

Thank you, Chucky
