Updated for the Slaughter news. That leaves a spot open for a few names. Either a 5th year or a guy like Joe Schmidt.

If Slaughter doesn't win his appeal and/or Nichols goes on medical, I firmly believe Tausch will be given a 5th year. If both happen, then it probably goes to a walk-on, although I'd love to bring back Stockton.

Great compilation Yankee! Thanks for that resource.

So this is what I see so far as of a spring roster. Notice one scholly looks to be open with another possibly opening up if Slaughter doesn't win his appeal. Some of the players numbers I do not know and as the become available I will edit them. * de-notes a 5th year of eligibility remaining.

you left off Mark Harrell

thanks for posting this Yankee and good catch bird on Harrell.

So add in Harrell and assuming Slaughter will be back, that would be 85 scholarship players plus two preferred walk on specialists. When was the last time Notre Dame had a full roster? It will make a huge difference, especially on the practice field.

It is wonderful to be at 85 finally. Everything is now in place and I believe last year was just the beginning!

OL line is scare thin , when you add in injury.Only 8 for spring ball .

agreed, need to have another injury free year on the OLine.

There should be 10 for spring right? Elmer and Harrell are added to the ones on yankee's original list. Unless one of the others had a procedure that will keep them out. Hegarty?

Could a young Dline prospect possibly change to OL. Matuska? Thoughts.

I count 10 (2 Martins, Watt, Lombard, the 4 H's, Stanley, Elmer) plus walkons. Low, but not terrible.

We definitely need at least 4 next cycle, but I feel confident the staff will go after the lines hard this cycle. BK stressed that strongly in his presser, and we are off to a solid start with both committed prospects and prospects we are squarely in it for.

I've heard it thrown around but he will get his shot at DE first. It is critical for 14' to not strike out on the OL. Less than 4 will be disappointing.

Clashmore , you think J. Jones moves to OL ?

I don't think moving a guy like Matuska would happen, at least not right away. He will arrive the same time 4 other monster offensive lineman recruits so there won't be as much of a pressing need on the O line. He'd also have to put on quite a bit of weight. Jones was getting some good reviews from the staff last fall when coaches were asked about the freshman that were sitting out the year. Should be squarely in the rotation at DE and d line isn't exactly deep with star talent, even with the addition of Vanderdoes. JMO, obviously.

Hegarty definitely should be, and Stanley could be - we will have to see how he comes back from surgery. They might hold him out as a precaution or at least limit his physical activity. I would. But 9 on scholly plus walk-ons is ok considering we have 4 more coming in. But I agree with the above, a injury here or there could be pretty tough.

Yep, going to need another strong OL haul this year to make up for only getting Harrell and Stanley in 2012. Like Ironman said, the staff is in good position with a lot of really good prospects with one already in the fold. There is also Gibbons out there who could get offered at any time. I'd be shocked if there aren't 4 big uglies in this class.

I would be shocked if we didn't also and the guys on the Big Board all look to be very good. We are a 1/4 of the way there with Byrne on board so that has me optimistic as well. I want to see us land a big-time LT this year. Not that the guys already here aren't, I just want a top 3-5 ranked Tackle because I'm greedy.

Looks like only Bivin and McGlinchey will definitely be full go summer. Montelus needs his shoulder issue cleared up, and McGovern is now out at least 6 months. Yikes.

Another thing I like about the OL depth is there shouldn't be a year where 3 or more starters need to be replaced for some time. Will lose Z Martin and Watt after this year, then just Lombard after 2014, then just two guys, etc. Will be good for continuity and will have a solid mix of veteran guys and younger guys.

Kelly said in the presscon that with five Oline coming in AND a repeated "emphasis on both O-&-D lines for 2014" we should be properly stocked after next cycle. I take this to mean that he is going to ride 2013 out just as we are unless some diabolical flurry of injuries occurs. So, Jones and Matuska stay where they are.

In a horrible pinch, shifts like Niklas or Springmann might be just as likely.

We need backers, inside next cycle. If Utupo and Moore don't make it this year, they shouldn't be fifth year candidates. We are already just behind and we will lose possibly six positions by the end of '13. If they work into the rotation, we would lose 4, but what advantage would that be unless they were starting material? And I think that is slim with Grace, Counsel, Rasaba, and Randolph behind them. I mean I can't find a vector for Utupo and Moore under Calabrese, over Grace, et all.

One quick thought: We have so many WR's! Is that the normal/appropriate amount?

11? I don't know, that is less than four each for the three positions. But how many teams dip to four wide?

Kelly LOVES WRs. I think that is one of his few love-is-blind-spots --- he oversigns there just a little. [this comes from his preferred offense, where the qb stands tall and delivers quick to tough good-route-running receivers and plenty of them]. It is possible that once his ND experience sets in more and he begins to REALLY like two TEs and some power running, he'll throttle back on his WR fetish. Note however that we went for four again in 2013.

What is normally a good number? 8? I don't have any idea.

BK has said he needs 7 WRs that are ready to play every game. Now that might need to be adjusted with the way he has started using TEs, but having a couple that aren't playing bring the total to 9 or 10 isn't a stretch for how he shapes his roster.

I wondered the same about DBs. Counting Slaughter (a big if), we have 18 DBs on roster next year?? I guess this is what a full roster is like...
