6'6" TEs are awesome to have, no doubt.

But both teams in the Superbowl use TEs a lot, both get production out of their TEs on crucial downs, and here are their sizes:

San Francisco
Vernon Davis 6'3" 250 (Maryland)
Delanie Walker 6'0" 242 (Central Missouri State)

Baltimore
Dennis Pitta 6-4 245 (BYU)
Billy Bajema 6-4 259 (OK St.)

I post this because I was starting to think it mattered if Smythe was cloaser to 6'4" or 6'6". I'm not so sure it does.

(This may have been better placed in the Smythe thread, mods feel free to move it.)

That is a small subset of the TE's in the NFL. They also just happen to be the TE's on the teams playing in the Super Bowl, not necessarily a respresentation of the most used or perceived best. Here are the heights off of the arguably best 10 TE's in the game (no order):

Rob Gronkowski - 6'6"
Jimmy Graham - 6'7"
Jason Witten - 6'6"
Vernon Davis - 6'3"
Antonio Gates - 6'4"
Kyle Rudolph - 6'6"
Jermichael Finley - 6'5"
Tony Gonzalez - 6'5"
Brandon Pettigrew - 6'5"
Heath Miller - 6'5"

So looking at this subset, it puts the average height of the top 10 (arguably) TE's in the game as slightly over 6'5". With Vernon Davis being the biggest oulier in the subset.

Easiest way to do this would be convert all TEs height into inches and then correlate (or run a regression) using height to predict catches/yards. Of course there are a lot of other factors to consider but that would give you something.

The height and bulk of TEs is also completely subjective to the type of offense you run and how you want to utilize the TEs. We used our TEs to inline block an awful lot last year, and will seemingly continue to do so. With that as the case, I would much rather our TEs be big and athletic, rather than some of the smaller TEs that are split out wide in the NFL.

Vernon Davis is a freak of nature, but none of the other three are asked to inline block the way we ask our TEs too.

Say you have a LB running man up against your TE. Would you rather have to rely on route-running alone or have the extra advantage of height?

Heath Miller is not top 10. Neither is Jermicheal Finley.

Zach Miller and Owen Daniels are better than both of them.

Heath Miller was selected to the Pro Bowl this year but due to injury had to decline.

He had a really good year....but over his career he hasn't been all that great. Decent. A shade above average.

I'd also throw Greg Olsen and Pitta in there if we're just looking at this year.

That's not his point. Even if those guys are in the top 10, one of them is 6-5 to begin with.

That was my next point. OD is only 6'3 and Pitta is 6'4....I think height has little to do with how good a TE is. It's nice to have a big target..but not necessary

Zach Miller- 396 yds 3 td's
Heath Miller 816 yds and 8 td's

Heath caught 33 more balls than Zach. Owen Daniels was solid this year (62/716/6) but Heath had a better year all around as well.

You gotta keep in mind Heath is a blocker who just happens to catch passes. He is def not a Gronk, but dude is clutch.

18 out of 32 starting tight ends are above 6'5" and another 6 were above 6'4". I don't think anyone is freaking out about having a short tight end, because obviously they can be successful. Pretty sure Wooly was just pointing out that being a tall tight end leads to more success...

How does one put Jermicheal Finley in their top 10 TE's?

Is one of your criteria drops or temper tantrums?

He almost had as many yards as Zach Miller did this year in '10, with only playing 5 games. He has some of the best playoff stats of any TE in history. But sure... a 390 yard Zach Miller is better. ok.

Anyways, there is a reason I said "arguably" in front of my list. Its my opinion. If you don't like it, then make your own list and average them out. I don't give a rip. Just quit trying to completely change the subject of the thread.

Why do you constantly have to be a antagonist?

I picked up Vernon Davis in my fantasy league after Gronk went down.

On that one change I went from #1 seed to losing in the first round.

Hey, archie bunker, when you post a list, don't you expect some feedback/disagreements? It's that what makes this such a great place to come and discuss things?

Quit being such a nancy. I was just replacing TWO GUYS on your list. Get over it.

The topic is average height of NFL tight ends and the correlation to height. Get with the program.

I'm not being a baby, i'm just pointing out that every thread that you post in turns into some battle where you are telling everybody else that they are wrong. You never are actually adding anything to the topic whether it be insight, info or comedic relief. You just post to **** people off.

I think there is something to be said for the tall athletic TE. But I don't think it's a requirement.

That's all I was saying. Look at Gates. Dude ran the show at 6'4 for about 5-6 years.

Davis has the ability to do the same...but somethings missing with that guy

Lol. Heath Miller not that great?

[Here I really need a gif of Mandy Pepperidge telling Otter he wasn't that great and Otter looking away and mouthing the words "Not great?" in disbelief]

You've outdone yourself with that one, irishpat. Outrageous statement.

Vernon Davis is also a freak athlete. It has been said multiple times that he is the fastest player on the 49ers. Any guy who runs a 4.38 can probably be a good passing threat. When he's 6'3" 250 that definitely helps too.

Sorry, I don't think Heath Miller is all that.

He's a solid TE, that does block...but nothing special in the pass catching game. There are far better guys.
