ND visited him today per hopkins.

According to 247 he has some other offers: Cal, Washington, ASU, Colorado and Michigan in addition to Oregon State.

Just watched a few minutes of this tape: Best RB on the WEST COAST...Joe Mixon - YouTube WOW. Not sure if he has top-end speed, which may be why he isn't getting top-end ratings love right now, but he has elite elusiveness. Looks like a great fit for us.

We may have 9/8 at RB/ Z WR heading into 2014. If we take a RB at all next cycle, it should be an elite "can't miss" prospect. Overloading creates problems.

I agree. I wonder if this is a guy who will reach that elite level after the summer camps though. Think of Ezekiel Elliot -- when we started recruiting him spring of his junior year he was ranked in the high 20's among RBs and outside the top 300 overall. Now he is a top 100 prospect overall and top 5 RB.

Mixon is drawing interest from schools like Oregon and 'Bama, so I wonder if people see that potential. I do, watching his tape, but I'm no Mike Farrell. *fart noise*

Hopkins confirms no Irish offer, but Denbrock told Mixon today that he could get an offer soon.

What dod you think our biggest needs are for next year. OL and DL are always a need, no matter how many you have IMO

That's puzzling to me, unless the staff thinks this kid is criminally underrated. I'm assuming offer = would accept his verbal commitment immediately?

What dod you think our biggest needs are for next year. OL and DL are always a need, no matter how many you have IMO

Here's a rough guess as to what we need for next cycle:
QB - 1
RB/ Z WR - 0-1
X/W WR - 2-3
TE - 1-2 (assuming we don't take one this cycle)
OL - 3-4
DE - 2-3 (depending on whether Tuitt goes pro early)
DT - 2-3 (2nd greatest position of need)
ILB - 3-4 (1st greatest position of need)
OLB - 1-2
CB - 1-2
FS - 0
SS - 0-1
K/P - 1

So we'll need at least 17 to fill out the depth chart reasonably well, and it's looking like we'll have ~20 spots for next year's class.

Or Elijah Hood even. Those are both guys we stand a very good chance with, so I'm not sure if we would accept Mixon's verbal commitment this early in the process.

Who knows if whether it's true that we'll offer soon. Denbrock may just be keeping Mixon on the hook. Also, the trail here is Mixon told Hopkins told Sapp that Debrock said ND would offer soon. That's quite a game of telephone.

I have to assume that even if we do offer, we wouldn't accept him yet. If we wouldn't accept Snodgrass, I don't know why we would accept Mixon. They are comparably rated (Snodgrass is somewhat better rated), and Snodgrass too has a nominal offer from us.

On the other hand, it may be that the staff thinks Mixon is criminally underrated. I thought the tape was good -- but not top 5 RB good, to be honest.

One other possibility: maybe we want him for something besides RB. He is listed as an athlete on 247. Don't know what else he would play though.

I say you take Hood no matter what as an athlete. I know I'm the only person who sees him as a LB.

Sony get's a spot no matter what!

Free article:

Notre Dame assistant coach Mike Denbrock stopped by Freedom last week and made it clear how impressed the Irish staff is in a meeting with Mixon’s coach.

“He was saying that he loved my highlight tape, it was off the charts and that when he comes back in January, he said hopefully he’ll have something for me,” said Mixon. “It makes me feel good. They’re the number one team in the country right now, so I know what my game is.”

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that tape was off the charts. I really expect this guy to move up the rankings.

I really like his tape also. I think i like him as a WR or DB prospect.

You take Sony as a RB, Hood as an athlete and Mixon as an athlete. I like that.

Wouldn't hurt if he spelled Notre Dame correctly. Just saying. Bambi, DShans you're welcome.

Can't wait to see where he falls in the next rankings. Top 100? He has a great tape and he impressed at the Army game combine, so I'm expecting a big ratings bump to match all these big offers.

Right around the corner from my work. I will be stopping by to watch him several times if he becomes an ND lean. Have to read the thread to see what interest he has.
