Deadspin is a glorified gossip column, but the twitter discrepancies are hard to dispute. Especially when we have been drawing up explanations for every single hole in the story, which have been numerous. How many explanations before we cross the line of supportive fans to blind homer idiots? I have wanted to believe in Manti's side of the story, but I'm done. Call me a bad fan, I really don't give a ****.

Never seen anyone so ill-prepared to answer a question, any question. Clearly a top notch journalist.

Im not sure what holes in the story exist. He lied about meeting to his parents because an internet relationship is weird and somewhat shameful.

No, you're right, Carbomb. Te'o concocted this entire scheme, starting back in 2009, in order to garner support for his Heisman campaign. Or wait, was it a cover for him being gay? Or wait, no, he's a sociopath who subsists on attention!

Or maybe he's a gay sociopath who felt a desperate need to drum up support for his non-existent Heisman campaign. Yeah, that makes much more sense than a naive kid getting catfished and then lying to his parents to avoid being questioned.

Your so clever you think might have actually fooled someone into thinking you were a fan.

But thanks I now understand why so many posters on here cast a suspicious eye towards new posters.

You are certainly not exempt.

I'd run every IP address of every new poster if I had the capability.

There's a lot of repeat offenders.

And a few "catfish."

I haven't been on the road much lately. Radio time is lacking. Though I don't listen to Rome much at all I was wondering what his take is after he was so impressed with Manti.

From the little that I heard, he was mostly hitting back the people who attacked him for falling for the story. Basically said that it was impossible to question the story as it was happening, and no one really did.

I'm not sure what he thinks of Te'o.

Ok, thanks for the response. I have never been much of Rome fan but I knew that after the interview in October with Manti that he spoke highly of him. Just wondered if he jumped on the bash wagon or not.

I've refrained on posting about this for a while waiting to get more information. Having done so, here are my thoughts:

1.) A lot of people are embarrassed of "online relationships". I met my wife online, and even though we went out on a date a few days later I lied to friends and family about how we met for a long time. I can totally understand why Manti would lie about that aspect of things.

2.) I actually believe him, although I have lost almost all respect for him. On PTI the other night, Wilbon described him as child like (speaking from his own first hand experiences with him). That's the only way I can rationalize what's happened - basically Manti has the emotional maturity/intelligence of a six year old. While I won't hate someone for that, nor do I think he should be hated by anyone for it, I do find it impossible to look at him the same way.

3.) Frankly I wish he was gay and this had been a ruse. He would have been a Jackie Robinson type figure instead of a laughing stock.

4.) If he was in any way involved and has pushed it this far he deserves the hammer, as does ND for backing him so forcefully.

5.) This is going to cost him more money than most people make in a lifetime.

Sad story all in all, frankly wish it would just stop.

Seems that many of our journalist friends think that if something doesn't make sense to them, then Manti must be lying. I don't get that.

I'll give Deadspin some credit in that they did the research (at least some) to unearth the story. How they took those facts and extrapolated them into Manti being involved in the hoax is mind boggling. They could have named anyone of us as co-conspirators on those same facts.

Personalities such as Stephen A. Smith and Mike Greenburg can't seem to see beyond their ability to understand as to other possible scenarios. They are gossip columnist, at least in this case, as much as they are journalists.

Manti has been nothing but a role model and a good person to this point in his life. To now suddenly assume he created this charade for attention or a Heisman campaign is just beyond stupid. How could anyone concoct that story and expect the media coverage that it received. Wouldn't he have had to known about his grandmother's passing in advance to create that terrible day? C'mon. How could he possibly know ESPN and NBC would pick this up and run with it to the level they did. How did he anticipate a 12-0 season to help with that?

Time for these professionals to do some work.

I mean the woodwork must be a portal today.

Firstly, Wilbon is a joke who pushes racial/social agendas in sports by being sensational. Which is why he is a mainstay at ESPiN.

Secondly, you wish Manti was gay? Really? You want him to be something he is not so that he is adored for being different. Ok, got it.

Thirdly, you say Manti has the "emotional maturity/intelligence of a six year old" because he started an online relationship and it ended up being someone 'catfishing' him. That's rich coming from someone who met his wife online, lied about how they met to avoid social stigma associated with such relationships, and then gets on a message board to bash said kid for having 'maturity/intelligence' deficiencies.

At least you didn't get 'catfished', but I'm sure if you did you wouldn't tell a soul. It's easy to tell your story when everything went according to plan.

I, for one am really sick of this line of thought. It would be OK if he lied and concocted this massive scheme to hide his sexuality?

Firstly, even throwing it out there is just strange. Secondly, if he had done all of this to cover his sexuality, it wouldn't make him any less of a scamming liar, he would just be a gay scamming liar and ND would be destroyed for it.

Occums Razor has been brought up a lot in this thread, and it's never been more sociologically apt.

I will buy the part that he lied and covered it up to avoid embarrassment. I just don't see how he could have the vision that it would improve his Heisman chances. Or any award for that matter. Neither Notre Dame nor Manti would fabricate such a story. The chance of it being uncovered would be too great. I also don't believe that Notre Dame would show blind loyalty and attempt to wrongly portray Manti as innocent. I would think they would issue a statement saying they continue to hold him in high regard with the ND family but regret and do not condone his apparent involvement in hoax.

The smoking guns are coming out and there is most likely more to come. I think he was hoaxed and is only guilty of lying because of embarrassing circumstances. Plus some of the things he has been quoted as saying are being debunked. Call me a blind homer but three days ago I had a different opinion.

Have you read the transcript of his interview? It's ridiculous, he's still talking about her as though she's a real person.

My interpretation is also the positive view of things. The alternative view - at a bare minimum - is that he intentionally exaggeratedand perpetuated a false story after any reasonable person would know it was nonsense. On December 6th he's told Lennay isn't really dead she was hiding from drug dealers and two days later he's giving interviews about his dead girlfriend.

He's either shockingly emotionally immature, or a total piece of crap. Given that he's a devout Mormon I find it less hard to believe he's emotionally immature. And I mean I wish he was gay in the limited way that it would be positive for his narrative rather than negative.

How do I nominate you for most argumentative poster in an IE award?

I didn't say I thought he was gay.

And to my mind it would be a very big difference if that was the purpose for any "scheming". As I said in another post, I think it would be ultimately positive for his narrative whereas this will absolutely not be.

Because up until two days ago he still hadn't confirmed that she wasn't real. I mean it's unreasonable to believe that he didn't go through some denial about it. Hurt, shock, pain. Just because he is public persona doesn't mean he doesn't have to deal with intimate/personal/private emotions. The people behind this hoax were incredibly skilled at making the girl, her family, her life real. It was far from their first time doing so. Manti fell for it and got 'catfished'. It happens all the time.

My interpretation is also the positive view of things. The alternative view - at a bare minimum - is that he intentionally exaggeratedand perpetuated a false story after any reasonable person would know it was nonsense. More than likely believed this to be the scam/hoax. He still believed wholeheartedly she had passed back in September.

He's either shockingly emotionally immature, or a total piece of crap. Given that he's a devout Mormon I find it less hard to believe he's emotionally immature. And I mean I wish he was gay in the limited way that it would be positive for his narrative rather than negative.

Slowly say my name three times into a mirror in a lowly lit room and I will appear on the ballot.

I'm not going to lie, I don't like your opinion. It's uneducated to the facts and relies too heavily on what has been presented and shaped by the agendas of the differing media outlets who created the story in the beginning and pushed it even further now. I am glad you are an ND fan. I'm glad you took time to present your opinion. We don't have to agree but I just think you're not taking in the specific human qualities involved in such a hoax. Tuiasosopo knew Te'o was an easy mark. Te'o would never think anyone would try to hurt him in such a method, therefore in his own mind there is no way Lennay wasn't real until he finally had confirmation, two days ago.
