Is it too wishful to believe that the perpetrators will come forward and absolve Manti? It seems like if these are just kids playing a prank, they might feel guilty enough to explain what they did, how they did it, and maybe why they did it.

Hopefully the big boy news agencies will do some real investigative reporting, not Deadspin and ESPN's terrible attempt, and figure this whole thing out.

If Swarbrick is as smart as he's supposed to be, he made damn sure Te'o wasn't lying before he did his press conference. Hell I would have, and I'm not very smart at all. I would've vetted the absolute sh*t outta the kid before I put my neck on the line for him.

I knew someone, that I had a serious sit-down with, when I was in SB for the Michigan game. They called Manti a "player." I was shocked. Something was wrong for a lot of people then. I don't know what Manti was or is, but I will give him the benefit of the doubt.

This person was around Manti a lot, and would know him pretty well. I thought her term was harsh at the time, and maybe reverse sexism. But I don't know.

This whole thing reminds me of the "Pigeon Drop" scam:

Pigeon drop is a confidence trick in which a mark or "pigeon" is persuaded to give up a sum of money in order to secure the rights to a larger sum of money, or more valuable object.[1][2][3][4] In reality, the scammers make off with the money and the mark is left with nothing.

In the process, the stranger (actually a confidence trickster) puts his money with the mark's money (in an envelope, briefcase, or sack) which the mark is then entrusted with. The money is actually not put into the sack or envelope, but is switched for a bag full of newspaper or other worthless material. Through various theatrics, the mark is given the opportunity to make off with money without the stranger realizing. In actuality, the mark would be fleeing from his own money, which the con man still has (or has handed off to an accomplice).

Also, people need to stop saying that they dated for three years. Yes, first contact was in 2009. But all indications are that the "relationship" started in 2012.

Local news station (Indy) reported from South Bend that Manti is in Miami and a news conference is planned for later today

Get off your high horse. It's funny, any way you cut it, and it isn't going away. I feel bad for him, he made a mistake, but that doesn't mean he's immune from getting his balls busted. You don't think he's gonna get it in an NFL locker room? We are going to be hearing about this all year next year as well, so buckle up.

I have refrained from trying to debate anyone on this. It's just too murky and with the facts we have now, without hearing from Manti and the alleged perpetrators, I don't think you will get anyone out of their confirmation bias at this point, on either side.
