I think ESPN is wrong. Sapp just posted this article:

Top247 TE Durham Smythe Focused On Three, Sets ND Visit

Where Smythe states:

Works out perfectly from an ND perspective if this is the case. The Staff should have a better idea of where they stand with the prospects visiting on the 25th and can make a more informed decision of who they would like the remaining spaces in this class to go to.

Best scenario because ND will know exactly where they stand with USC class after the 25th weekend. if ND pushes hard and has a spot I believe he enters the class.

Really, really want another TE in the class. Would love Vanderdoes, Prevot and Smythe. Maybe Fitts if there is room. TE is just really not deep though, and I feel that is often overlooked.

6'6 230 has good hands and can block!!!!! sign him up .....i know we need depth on the dl which i want vanderdoes but the te position is not a luxury it is a necessity for us.....heurman is the split out te but we don't know how welch is, koyack? does he have potential...we shall see...but again he isn't a blocking te...and troy....we saw how quick 1 person going down this year caused panic....he is a definite need imo

also doesn't hurt getting guys from texas for future

Really? TE strikes me as one of the deepest positions on our roster:

Welch - 4:s:, 9th TE, 0.9124 rating
Niklas - 4:s:, 18th SDE, 0.9010 rating
Koyack - 4:s:, 2nd TE, 0.9752 rating
Heuerman - 4:s:, 10th TE, 0.9040 rating

Outside of QB, you'd be hard-pressed to name another position group with that much talent from top to bottom. Niklas and Koyack saw a lot of reps this year, and Welch has been in the program for 3 years now.

That said, if Welch's injury prevents him from contributing meaningfully, then we absolutely need another TE. And if the staff plans to use lots of 12 and 13 personnel in 2013, one could argue that we ought to be carrying at least 5 TEs. But depth isn't really an issue.

deep as in terms of #'s not in terms of production...w/ us going 2 te sets...we need a blocking te and he is also able to flex out due to good hands and being athletic

That's always the case though, isn't it? We had no idea what we had in Eifert until Rudolph got injured. Now that Eifert is leaving, one of the others has an opportunity to step up. My money's on Niklas.

Eh, I just feel like Koyack played poorly at times this year. Heuerman is an unknown on the college level. Welch coming off a knee injury, and Niklas was exposed at times in blocking as well as not much of a receiving threat IMO. I guess Smythe can't be expected to contribute a lot because he, like Heuerman is an unknown.

I just think it would solidify the position. Though the front 7 definitely does need help. The whole scholarship picture is really interesting this year

My dream finish is EV, Fitts, Prevot, Smythe. I do not want to see Smythe at Michigan or Stanford.

I think TE has good depth, but with the offense using multiple TE's ideally you would want one more at that position.

most of the time but we got to witness koyack's 2 years already...havent been impressed at all and being from PA i want him to succeed as much as anyone but he doesn't seem to have that tenacity and head in game...just my .02 although this could be his breakout year..who knows

troy showed us a little bit but was confused a lot(realize his 1st year position change)....def has the potential and i would 100% agree on it being him

mike hasnt played a snap but he should be figured as a flex te not blocking
welch-question how he comes back...when he played you saw a little, but nothing to say...ohhh yeah

so with this...it doesn't exactly leave me feeling really good...plus can u really have too many 6'6 guys who move well...redzone options

If Koyack doesn't improve substantially (insert potential jokes), we won't be seeing a whole lot of two TE sets in my opinion. I even think it was overstated this past year; Kelly and Martin certainly went away from it as he year went on. This goes with saying that Eifert was a WR, not a TE, the majority of the time that he was on the field.

If Koyack doesn't become the stud he is capable of, Niklas will get all of the minutes and Kelly/Martin will go with three receivers. There is too much talent at WR to go two TE very often moving forward.

I think it takes a little longer for a TE to develop than a lot of other positions. You're learning blacking techniques on the line and split out. Then you learning routes from the line and split out. You also have to devleop the strength for the line and that doesn't come quickly.

Jason Howell:
Smythe is a big tight end. He's a solid receiver. Has some room to grow into his frame. Also a pretty solid blocker.

Will ND even have room for him? Starting to make me wonder about some fifth year guys.
