Notre Dame offensive line commit Colin McGovern has been doing all he can to get to know his second home in South Bend. After attending Notre Dame's first home game against Purdue, the 6-foot-6, 285-pound made the return trip this past weekend to do his part in representing the 2013 Irish recruiting class.

Just like many of the other commits who were on campus, the whole experience left him shaking his head.

“It was absolutely ridiculous,” said McGovern in disbelief. “I've never been a part of something like that and it was the greatest atmosphere I have ever been in. Not just because it was the Notre Dame-Michigan rivalry, but the fact that Notre Dame is really putting everything together as a team. The offensive is working hard to get things worked out and the defense is just unbelievable. It really was amazing.

“When you bounce around from school to school, visiting, you're looking for a special tie-in to that school. Seeing then I'm committed to Notre Dame, I take pride in that school, so when they go out there and beat one of their rival it really leaves you with a great feeling.”

The Lincoln-Way West standout had a great time interacting with all the recruits, but he spent most of his time targeting one of Notre Dame's top offensive line targets in the class of 2014.

“Hunter (Bivin) and Steve (Elmer) were up there two weeks ago with me for the Purdue game, but this time I was able to catch up with James (Onuwalu) and a few others,” he shared. “I spent a lot of time hanging out with Ross Pierschbacher pretty much the entire day. He just received his offer, and with the number of guys in our offensive line class, we won't be looking for a lot of people for those positions next year. At least that's what coach (Harry) Hiestand is saying.

“We want to pick up two or three really good offensive lineman in that class, and Ross would fit in well. He was up at The Opening with Steve and I, and as a sophomore, he was holding his own against everyone, including the juniors. He would be a great one to pick up. Hopefully, he'll go out and visit a few places and then come back and realize how special Notre Dame is.”

McGovern knows there will still be plenty of opportunities this fall to help recruit for Notre Dame, and he has a goal of being at every home game for the rest of the season.

“I'm still planning on getting up to South Bend every chance I get,” said McGovern. “I only live about an hour and a half away and it's a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.”

He's coming to visit on Jan 19 for Junior Day. Currently that's the only Junior Day he's planning to go to per II.

Pierschbacher also said that ND getting 4 OT verbals in '13 class helped Hawkeyes. Feels better chance to play earlier at Iowa.

So you'd rather be given a starting spot on a garbage team then earn your spot on a good one? Sounds about right in this day and age.

Then be on your way and good luck. Competition breeds champions.

Yes sir. I'm not worried. We all (well me at least) started freaking out when Kyle Bosch committed to Michigan early in the process. We'll still pull 4 quality OL this year.

Scout.com: Pierschbacher Picks Iowa

An Iowa football program sorely in need of good news received some on Saturday when standout recruit Ross Pierschbacher verbally committed to the Hawkeyes. The Class of 2014 offensive lineman from Cedar Falls said he picked them over Notre Dame.

"Getting a chance to play in front of my home state and my community just felt right," Pierschbacher said.

Hawkeye Head Coach Kirk Ferentz and assistant Reese Morgan visited Pierschbacher on Friday.

"I bumped into them and sat down and talked with them for a while," the 6-foot-5, 270-pounder said. "They just really helped me feel more comfortable with where they're going with the program and how they see me. I just woke up this morning feeling really good about it knowing where I wanted to go. I got the stress off of me and got 2014 recruiting class going for Iowa."

The Iowa staff can't comment on Pierschbacher's commitment until he signs a nation letter of intent. He will be able to do that in February of 2014.

Scout.com ranks Pierschbacher as a four-star recruit on its five-star scale. The service pegs him as the fourth-ranked offensive guard nationally in his class. He'll likely play tackle at Iowa.

Pierschbacher was one of only a handful of juniors that attended The Opening, a summer combine event in Oregon for the nation's top recruits. He held scholarship offers from Boise State, Iowa, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Northern Iowa (his first), Oklahoma and Wisconsin and visited national-champion Alabama in November.

Landing Piershcbacher helps heal Hawkeye Nation after a 4-8 campaign.

"This isn't the way Iowa football is this past season. I'm sure they're going to bounce back. I just want to be a part of that."

Pierschbacher makes it three years in a row that Iowa has landed a commitment from Cedar Falls. Barkley Hill came in the 2012 class and Ike Boettger joined up in '13.

Being the first commitment in '14 allows Pierschbacher to begin recruiting prospects in his class to Iowa. One of the top targets in the state is Union High, Laporte City quarterback Jay Scheel.

"I talked to him (Saturday) morning," Pierschbacher said. "He can speak for himself and I'm not going to pressure anybody. I just want to encourage guys that want to be a part of it to come join me, especially the instate guys. They've been around Iowa football and know what it's about.

"Hopefully with my commitment, they see that things are going in the right way still and that we're not backtracking."

In addition to Piershcbacher and Scheel, Iowa has offered in-state prospects Keegan Render (Indianola) and Allen Lazard (Urbandale, Iowa State verbal).

Pierschbacher said he was scheduled to visit Notre Dame's junior day next weekend. Instead, he will be at Iowa for its underclassmen event.

"it came down to Iowa and Notre Dame," Pierschbacher said. "Coach (Brian) Kelly interviewing with the NFL, that just got me thinking that I wanted to play for the coach I committed to. If he doesn't go this year, maybe he'll go the next year after that."

The Irish also received commitments from four Scout.com four-star offensive tackles in the 2013 class.

"I just started to question if playing time would become an issue," Pierschbacher said. "I want to play. Coming into Iowa, I think I have a better chance to play earlier than Notre Dame."
